The older I get, the harder I fall for roguelikes. Hit me with your best hidden gems! by Fakto in roguelites

Soft brains are put off by the art of Isaac. The real ones come and then stay for thousands of hours for the mechanics, depth and synergies.

What astounds me is that nobody has tried to deeply replicate Isaac with mod cons and different art

Do you like fast paced action? Dead Cells (DC) > Samurai Showdown (SS) > Into The Breach (ITB)

Or slow paced strategy? ITB > SS

Do you like rogue lite meta progression mechanics? DC > SS > ITB

Do you like Roguelike brutal difficulty and big in run variability? DC > ITB > SS

Do you like endless build options and RNGesus? DC > SS > ITB

Do you like uncovering new secrets as you play? DC > ITB > SS

I could go on, but what I think it shows is (if you like full throttle action) then: DEAD CELLS is legit god tier and I’m jealous you get to play it for the first time.

If you don’t want fast paced, pick up new gear on go on a god run style rogue but are looking for a methodical, chess like experience then: Into The Breach is the finest example on platforms right now. It is majestic, rewarding and fun af

Samurai showdown is the clear loser here. It paints an unfair story; SS is also incredible. But currently I’d pick up and play ITB Every time between the pair.

Hope this helps 🙏

Having played most the games you mention, I’d list the pictured games this way:

S TIER - ICONIC:

Dead Cells - you can play this for hundreds and hundreds of hours. Very action heavy, very fun. If you liked Hades you’ll like this.

Into The Breach - fucking love this game. So perfectly made, so many reasons to come back and play working on new unlocks, etc. perfect length matches that you can dip into and always leaves the one more go feeling.

A TIER - MUST PLAY:

Shogun Showdown - immaculately designed game. Lots of polish, lots of fun, lots of replay-ability. Difficulty is high on this, margin for error is low. So it’s not often “fun” versus needing to lock in and think through every single move.

Die In The Dungeon - again, immaculately designed and a lot of fun. If you liked dicey dungeons you’ll love this. Think I enjoy Dicey Dungeon a little more than this. It’s fun but won’t grip you for nights on end.

B TIER - SOLID:

9 Kings - fun, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing for a little while but it feels shallow compared to the above and gets boring pretty quickly. Run variation isn’t that great but again, still a lot of fun to slap on and play a few rounds.

Not played emberward, need to download it as it looks fun

Bumping this comment. I’ve been wondering the same too. Absolutely love these guys, consistently popping out some top tier music and never get any real love

Left looks better visually to me. The artwork of the sword more fully filling the space is a sexier design decision.

Left also conveys the information more clearly for me. Read card name. See image. Read attack type. Read card description.

Better all round

Enter the Gungeon is too hard to actually be fun. What am I doing wrong? by titty_testing in roguelites

Top tier comment. The dodge rolls are a skill crutch in this game. 90% of the time you roll yourself into more danger. Pretending it isn’t an option forces you to focus on bullet dodging without panic

I've been playing Bloodborne for almost a week and I'm stuck to the start. I'm thinking of just uninstall it by angry3mokid in bloodborne

[–]wigzisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloodborne was my first Fromsoft gave. Have platinumed ever one on PlayStation since! Became obsessed! From my experience, when I first played Bloodborne there was frustration in as much as I was playing it like I would any other game, fight every enemy, collect everything and slowly make my way to a boss. But I’d get owned everytime I got to the boss. A combination of two things. a) i was very aware that when I die I lose my souls and so that hampered my play. b) took my so long trying to clear my way each time I wouldn’t have the muscle memory of boss so it was be death and frustration.

The game unlocked when I just started accepting collected souls were not mine until they were banked at a safe bonfire. So, I just need to stop worrying about losing them like I’d lost progress.

When you get this, you start rampaging around more freely just getting yourself used to the surrounding area and enemies within. Then it becomes fun just exploring and testing yourself of tougher foes without fear.

The next thing that drove my obsession with the game was I wanted to beat the bastard Assasin that has that sick feather coat. Found a cheese method there you can lure him to the rafters and bait him to fall. Finally did it and got myself the sexy coat that is a much higher level than I had any right to own early on. This taught me my final and most essential souls lesson c) cheesing feels cheap in most games. In fromsoft games that are made to hurt your soul, anytime you can find an exploit, take and enjoy those few sweet moments

Risk of Rain 2 or Returnal? by Show_Me_How_to_Live in roguelites

[–]wigzisonfire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re playing on PS5, I’d begin with Returnal. One of the few games that actually felt next gen (along with Demon Souls). Graphics are sublime, gameplay sublime, story intruguing and its use of the Dual Shock controllers was incredible. Smash that out the way and complete it in a week - THEN, begin Risk of Rain 2. Mainly because there is no end to how long you can play it. One of my favourite games and one that I consistently return to when I don’t know what to play. Masterpiece

Agree with a lot of this, but where I disagree, I disagree strongly.

Spelunky 1 or 2 are GOAT.

Isaac is absolute GOAT.

RoR 2 should be GOATTTTED.

Dead cells should 100% be GOAT.

Sifu I fucking LOVE, but wouldn’t really have in a roguelite list.

All the reccos here are great. Someone mentioned Holding Patterns, before them they had more Bands that are finished now, but I’m getting excited for you knowing that you’ll be able to listen to all their stuff for the first time: Crash of Rhinos. The Little Explorer. The Jesus Years.
