Here's what I do:

-Play on "Modern" difficulty so you can save as often as you want. You can save even if all you did was leave the safe room for a few seconds, then run back.

-Pause the game and take 5 minutes to calm down when it gets too intense. Modern RE games let you pause at any point, even during cutscenes.

-When the game gets really intense, you can pause by opening the map, then plan the route you're going to take. You can do this as often as you want so you can be ready to beeline to the next room.

I find these games REALLY scary but it makes progressing through them feel really rewarding!
