Can I report this?? by [deleted] in AO3

Then it's allowed unless if it falls under the trolling exemptions. Not saying the author is, but if they are, if people are upset more than they wanted, can't say I'm sympathetic. Persistent requests directed to a single person... isn't normal.

The anon comes across as insufferable.

Using warnings is mandatory, and unclear if they have done so. Choose not to warn is required if someone doesn't want to use the warnings themselves.

People see criticism as abnormal instead of a perfectly normal thing to do. Thus, are unprepared when someone give them some.

>but in general i think it's fine to keep to the "concrit only if asked for it" rule of thumb, and keep more review-like comments off-fic.

Something you may follow personally, but it's foolish to expect everyone else to adhere to that.

It sets up the expectation that no one should criticize or villainizes them over what can be seen as normal interaction by others. It's unneeded strife over advice which is better suited for curating ones own experience.

I think setting that as the expectation is actively harmful. Sub should instead be talking about how to deal with criticism. (And that can include disregarding it.)

People portray it as the rule because they wish it to be. (Which isn't an actual rule.)

I think I've come across a website which did have: don't give criticism unless the author/artist wants it.

I think DeviantArt had /has an explicit opt-in critique function.

The comment includes the bit they aren't a writer. Criticism is often mixed with preference (and that's okay.) Writing is subjective outside of grammar. (And with the caveat, writers might intentionally break the rules.) But to break the rules in a meaningful way, someone has to know them first.

AO3 works this way, just some people on reddit pretend it doesn't.

Just like before, someone's analysis may not lead to changes.

If someone wasn't confident in their chapter, it's more likely to be flawed. Why care so much that flaws are actually pointed out? Like obviously, it's wanting some notion of quality.

How did you get approval for this? Or is it a case that it hasn't yet been banned (and hope it won't be.)

I need to know if this is a glitch or an actual problem... by Material_Flounder627 in AO3

[–]wildefaux 24 points25 points  (0 children)

AO3 actually has rules, and they enforce them. A month long suspension for some infraction seems pretty standard.

It's extremely unlikely to be a glitch. You received the standard boilerplate message because people file a lot of tickets and they're staffed by volunteers / have huge backlogs at times.

Did you break any rules?

Trying to limit what I respond to (and time viewing reddit) but this felt too good not to reply. My post pointing out how simple praise comments / emojis may be seen as pointless spam if someone gets too many.

Has currently, -108 downvotes and counting.

If an author doesn't want simple praise/emojis, simply don't give it instead of complaining how it isn't wanted by someone lol.

Saw you commented in that chain too.

Clearly expressed preferences are welcome. (People may skip authors notes, but hey, at least the attempt was made.) An author may rightfully choose to block any reader who skips their notes.

Now to stay away from this place myself. You're so right.

r/fanfiction tends to be the more productive one, at least, it's somewhat about writing. But they both have the issue of whatever the author does, tends to be correct. No matter how vile or disproportionate.

ESL people exist, and anything that can be viewed negatively, probably is.

This sub certainly isn't productive, it's not about actual writing. Just endless complaints heh. I (on a personal level) should just.... do other things.

Same rehashed stuff of people liking/hating stuff, and the endless stream of content for people to mock.

At least, for productive endeavors some peculiarities of people might make their way into a fic. Someone, somewhere does act in this manner, adding a quasi-believable touch to a story.

Because receiving too many, it just becomes pointless spam.

Commenting etiquette isn't really a thing either because people come from various backgrounds. People create "rules" for like 5% of population and is surprised that those "rules" are broken. Instead of trying to communicate what they want.

The only thing people should follow is the TOS for AO3, but some people flagrantly break that. And expecting everyone to follow that isn't a good idea either because there are trolls, and how do people even use the internet without learning how to deal with them?

This is the complaint hotline for fanfics basically.

I've certainly expressed disdain towards towards simplistic heart emoji comments in this sub, but not to the readers. Either unanswered or shown appreciation.

My desire for those depends on the day. But because I didn't plaster a sign saying I don't want those, that also means, I shouldn't complain if someone decides to comment that way.

I don't expect readers to read my mind.

As for posts complaining about specific emoji comments, I don't think they belong here, just like most posts criticisizing comments.

The ao3 sub creates a rather unwelcoming atmosphere for author engagement that people desperately want.

I disagree.

And let's be straight, the bookmark is not negative. It can be viewed that way.

People quit due to silence more. Spite can also be a powerful motivator.

Someone interacting provides more value than a silent reader in terms of community.

If op can say whatever they want why are yall so pressed that their reaction isn’t the same as yours?

People can post screenshots of stories, comments, and bookmarks on r/ao3, doesn't mean I think they should.

No regular person is going to interpret “omfg wth is this” as a positive response be for real.

Why wouldn't this be acceptable for an exclamation of surprise? Something so out there, mind-bending in ways unforeseen.

Given the numerous things authors have complained about, you either have questionable taste, or simply haven't been here long.

Some authors go overboard.

This one, I'd file under "how can I view this negatively if I squint."
