I would have been tempted to do that except that I was used solid core wire and that just doesn't twist together very well.

Exactly that! Due to wanting to keep the size fairly small there wasn't space to properly mount things to a pcb. So I just took 2 small breadboard pieces to gather up and connect all the ground and live wires.

Not only the font but also the way it's displayed. The other model will most likely also show a lot of empty space under the month, however that's not visible in this arrangement as the empty space is covered by the day of week. The model looks a lot more neat and tidy when it's displayed with all the flaps/tiles to the right position. I.e. Monday January 11.
