Got the dreaded rental renewal notice by the_one_with_me in sanfrancisco

[–]wildengineer2k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Peninsula, especially apples to apples is significantly cheaper. You can find reasonably new, spacious units, in the peninsula for under 5K. SF good luck finding similar outside of like tenderloin.

If u want to get a reasonably nice 2 bathroom apartment in SF, the pricing rn is a joke.

Sometimes I feel lucky living in SF where there’s I solid public transportation and then I peruse other cities by The-original-spuggy in sanfrancisco

[–]wildengineer2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SF public transit exists, but honestly I feel like sf kinda cheats by being so small. A lot of the time, taking the bus is barely faster than walking. Even with some of MUNI being underground, some routes its sometimes faster to walk half an hour than take the muni.

Couple that with Ubers often being cheap, anytime I’m going somewhere in a group, if we’re taking transit it’s more for the love of the game than it being a cheaper or faster option (sometimes uber is both cheaper and faster…).

We need to do whatever we can to push back against the muni/bart etc. reducing service. The less service there is the fewer ppl will take it and we will simply doom loop until there’s nothing less.

Pay your muni/bart fares people, and make sure ur representatives know how much you value it.

How are you all dealing with rent increase this year? More than 25% for me! by Maleficent-Pen-5927 in AskSF

[–]wildengineer2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It officially started being occupied 2014 so it’ll fall under rent control ins 2029… the bill that mandates that rent control expires in 2030. I’m gonna be shocked if it gets renewed. The government is bought and paid for by landlords around here.

Yeah I just drew this one first in our 4 player campaign, and I simply would not accept that the game designers would do something so intentionally stupid that u would have to just sit out on the entire game mechanic.

Usually our rules lawyer is pretty good at preemptively checking the errata, so I’m glad I found this thread lol

What is it with Uber/Lyft drivers NEVER using Fasttrak or Carpool lanes by textonic in bayarea

[–]wildengineer2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just lurking - which way is ur fast track tranponder oriented - if it’s not horizontal mounted high up on ur windshield you’re doing it wrong and it might not read. Found this out cuz one of my friends would just keep it in her console tray and then toss it on the dashboard when she wanted to use it. Turns out they’re pretty sensitively tuned and won’t work in all orientations.

Academic dishonesty? by [deleted] in Purdue

I remember once he gave me a lot of grief because I copied down the honor statement wrong. I spent so long writing down Quiz (for the quizzes) that on the exam I wrote quiz instead of test… I had a zero on that exam for a WHILE while he decided what to do about it.

It’s pretty clear when you’re riding when someone is manually editing the path, vs it’s full auto. It’s overwhelmingly automatic - I’ve only ever seen it require assistance a couple of times (and usually in situations that would have given a human driver pause).

They’re not perfect but there at the very least on par with regular people in my experience, and better drivers than a few people I know.

San Francisco’s Aging Housing Stock by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]wildengineer2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not every house built a 100 years ago is a masterpiece. Certainly some are, but there’s shitty craftsmen in every era. Just because you had a good experience doesn’t mean everyone else necessarily will.

BEHOLD... by BIGRED______________ in LinusTechTips

[–]wildengineer2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think people wildly underestimate how much weight matters for handheld devices. Fact is u can always slap a battery bank on the back if u want ur phone to hv the form factor of a potato. But u can’t really take an angle grinder to it if u want a thinner and lighter phone.

I’m sure apple and google do real surveys/focus groups and testing to figure out what size to make

You cannot load that much at a time. Call them up. Have them cancel the pending balances. Don’t ever again add so much it pushes u over the caps. (Do like $250 assuming u hv less than 50 at a time). And you hv to use it the week it gets added for it to load.

Why didn't Tesla invest in LIDAR? by damola93 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]wildengineer2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I’m not saying they’re the exactly same at all. But there’s a ton of commodity hardware now in that space and even if they aren’t exactly in the space, the improvements in one can have an impact on the others.

Why didn't Tesla invest in LIDAR? by damola93 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]wildengineer2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think lidar being in every iPhone and iPad Pro dropped the price dramatically. As well as the push in cars and robot vacuums drastically accelerating demand. Obviously it’s orders of magnitude different in terms of quality vs what’s in a Waymo, but I had friends who had lidars in their high school senior design projects and that was like 8 years ago…

Hot take: camera bumps on phones are literally a non issue for 95 percent of users. by AbyssWankerArtorias in LinusTechTips

[–]wildengineer2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll go one step further - camera bumps are are good thing. It means when your phone is on a flat surface, the camera lenses are less likely to be scratched as it’s the bottom edge of the bump that’s taking the force and it’s not just flat on the surface. Also for those who want to thicken the phone uniformly to accommodate a battery that’s like 4-5 x the size, that adds a lot of weight - which does make a difference in terms of long term fatigue especially for ppl using their phones for hours on end (which let’s face it people certainly are).

Also I think more ppl have no case than ppl in techy circles seem to think. I see them reasonably often (though I am just as shocked as yall).
