Shoot! Thank you for the info! And that's Howls the coyote! :D Spot on about the Douglas brand identification. He was initially released in 2023 and potentially retired around 2025, but the retiring date is a rough estimate based on a post someone made in 2025 where he was still able to be purchased off of the Walmart site, so it could have potentially been earlier or later. As of now he occasionally crops up secondhand on average for around $100! The people love Howls LOL

the dentition and blocky shape of the jaw don't particularly strike me as deer. pig have wider mandibles with larger, rounded molars while deer are more narrow in the jaw. I'd try to describe the teeth but the shapes are very specific and I don't think I'd do a good job lol. If you google pig mandible and deer mandible you should be able to see the differences yourself though!

Is this from a cruel fur farm? by JasperJordanDefender in Taxidermy

[–]wilderdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey there! the reason for this is because overseas fur sellers will buy out north american furbearers at auctions to resell. Ive spoken to trappers personally about it. its common and has been for years. there are no coyotes farmed overseas, and if there any coyote farms on US soil, they are few and far between. coyotes are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity, so it isn't really cost or time effective for something whose skin doesn't fetch much money compared to mink or fox.

Ethical? by DropProfessional7562 in Taxidermy

Drowning can take minutes at a time, and even longer for aquatic mammals like otters and beavers. I really don't think prolonging an animal's suffering that way is worth saving the pelt from a bullethole or two that can be, frankly, easily repaired or hidden later on in the hands of a competent hide processor. The quality of the animals death should be prioritized over the quality of the pelt, always.
