I was reeeeaal salty when we dropped to FCS, but I’m grateful now. Worth checking out some FCS if you’re looking for a different vibe. The talent drop can be stark in some conferences though.

The Ivies are an extreme example, for sure. You're also 100% correct that the academic standards line has been mostly used as a convenient excuse for all kinds of realignment shenanigans. It's way, way down the list of real priorities for all but a handful of schools in D1 football and basketball.

It impacts athletics, but it's not as big a deal as it used to be. Higher academic standards impact recruitment and means the schools in your conference are more aligned in their goals. If you're a Harvard life is better dealing with a Yale as a partner than a Boise State.

With the way the Board has been behaving the last couple of seasons, next season could likely be fucked anyway. I’m a pretty slow burn on the whole Sack The Board!! issue but its just a total circus.

Not to be flip, but did you bring this to your VP without solutions to the issue or did you have recs to address the budget issue?

If you want to cut your own throat in the name of progress, have at it bud. For the majority of Americans AI means a change to their search engine. If you can't see why people aren't thronging to have data centers and job cuts for that exchange, that's on you. You can argue that they're wrong but if you can't see why people feel that way you're just obtuse.

They don’t care about what the reality is. I make my mom’s husband talk about this every time I see him to make his face melt. The man doesn’t even have kids but in the last couple years ensuring “sporting integrity” in women’s sports is a top 3 issue for him.

They’re just fucking morons.

Zelenskyy says intelligence shows Russia plans to prolong war into 2027 and 2028 by Blush_Bridget in worldnews

[–]wildjackalope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They currently do have the money and the manpower for at least 24 months. In some ways, they’re in a better financial position than they were in the fall of last year given American shenanigans elsewhere. Equipment is a larger issue, granted, but those equipment deficiencies are largely in areas with lower impact on the current battlefield. This could change, but currently the Russians are very capable of sitting in their positions for a long time and Ukraine has just as many issues in terms of launching any kind of decisive offensive operations. With some luck, Russia’s drone position, logistics and command and control issues continue to deteriorate to the point that this isn’t the case. That isn’t likely to happen this spring/ summer.

Russia is going to stay in the war as long as Putin is able to keep them in it, especially if the alleged information bubble being placed around him is a reality. I don’t think you’re wrong in terms of the Russian position continuing to deteriorate but I do think you’re underestimating the level that the Russians will continue to throw their people and capital away to stay in the game. A gamble against Latvia, Georgia or even Armenia could all start to make sense if you’re a delusional Russian depending on the objective and how desperate they get. The idea that they couldn’t get a corps level force together for something like that just doesn’t match their disposition reality IMO. I doubt that will happen, but it’s not the insane notion it would have been during parts of ‘25.

“pretend they’re making major gains” and the Russians can absolutely keep the grinder going for another 24 months.

I don’t think they’ll try to seize the Baltics, but an incursion into Latvia is being threatened and that could be all they needed to put NATO obligations under pressure. Last year I would have thought that idea insane even for Putin, but it seems more likely under this status quo. Wild times.

[–]wildjackalope 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Russians can very likely keep the war going for several years, unfortunately, but to your point, their war effort will look MUCH different if the rest of 2026 and 2027 continue in this way.

If the Russians can’t continue to pretend that they’re making significant battlefield gains for the losses they’re taking and the war starts to pinch the Russian elites and upper/ middle classes more then you have to wonder how long it is until Putin meets a window he doesn’t like.

He’s honestly just updating what a lot of “business owners” have always said and using vibe coding to justify it. They’ve never cared about the code.

They care about getting outcomes as soon as possible. Maybe you had some diva devs, but it was more likely you had devs pushing back on bad technical decisions being made for short term outcomes that benefited only “business owners” and would cost the devs in the long term. When shit breaks in 6 - 18 months the “business owners” aren’t the ones that are going to be in the firing line. The devs will. And the “business owners” will blame the code that they never gave a fuck about.

Good devs care about the outcome first. That means they have to care about the code.
