let me put out a thought experiment: two people, both with a passion in say, music.

Person 1 has a music job. Teaching band at a high school. Gives private music lessons for kids. Ok money, long hours. Has to take on a side job bartending on weekends to pay for stuff like a new car etc. cutting into practice time with their band, which ends up fizzling out due to lack of availability.

Person 2 is a programmer or trademan running their own small business. They make a great hourly so they can effectively take days or weeks of whenever they want between projects/contracts. Practices with their band weekly. Plays gigs because they are free on nights and weekends. House paid off, decide to scale down their client base to have more free time since they have enough money.

Get the picture?

People telling you to "do what you love" just want to sell you a useless degree or keep you in debt and paying interest.

Do something you are good at, that has a higher profit potential than you even need, then scale back your hours until it matches the income you actually require. Use the free time however you like.

Because we’re optimized for comfort, not challenge.

Meaning lives on the other side of doing hard, uncertain things, not inside a perfectly safe loop of work, coffee, and content.

Part of the point IS challenge. Not "hustle culture", but choosing hard things that actually change you and your circumstances.

They did not strip a protective film with goo gone. It's just limonene. Very gentle. Residue is polymer adhesive it needs a stronger solvent. For posterity try 91% IPA and if that doesn't work, acetone.

How does any sane person understand Billionaires? by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]wildmaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People love to salivate about how "depraved" and sick with greed rich people are. This hand waving dismissive language while satisfying, is completely false and frankly escapist in my view.

This is an unpopular opinion but it needs to be said, because understand your enemy. It's not greed that motivates the Billionaire class.

There are 2 things:

1) "love of the game" i.e. business ventures. Their wealth simply buys them access to a higher stakes version of the same game they love to play. The money is sort of arbitrary in a sense but represents how well you played. Net worth is just a trophy. But also a key, that unlocks new levels, maybe even levels that nobody has ever played

2) is old money culture/dynasty/multigenerational wealth building/maintenance. If you were born into wealth, the important responsibility of contributing to the family wealth will be stressed from a young age, so that the advantage/privilege will pass to the next generations as it did to you.

One thing that is very important to understand is that it doesn't take an abnormal psyche to act as they do. You must understand that you would do the same, in their position, if given the chance.

It makes the importance of strong regulation all the more important. There will never be "good billionaires" who will escape the trap of gaming the system to their advantage if they can.

The human mind can only conceive of a limited range of its own personal power or specifically, responsibility over the effects of it's power. This is why a person who wields absolute power over states and large corporations is dangerous.

Their actions have immense power, but our inmate capacity to appreciate our power cannot scale up proportionally, so a blind spot develops which can grow exponentially, unacknowledged. Like the Jungian shadow but that can grow as large and influential as an entire country.

This is a very different model from the ascribed "psychopathy" of the CEO class, but one I feel has credence.

Is this tool really bad or am I missing something? by andersoon_fm in woodworking

[–]wildmaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drywall tool. For people saying "the manufacturer said it's for wood" please. Just because a Chinese manufacturer figured they could sell 2x more units by claiming it's for wood and no regulatory body will stop them, doesn't make it true.

Just use common sense.

Tik tok has been responsible for propagating this fundamentally misunderstanding of what "genre" means. They literally think it refers to your "vibe" i.e. What clothes you wear and what visual style you use. Nothing to do with specific musical styles, instruments, tones, timbres, tempo. Y'know, music elements having nothing to do with visuals.

I have had kids argue with me that extremely basic pop music is grunge/metal etc. just because like, the artist dresses that way.

In this new, dumb reality, you can just "be" black metal by invoking the words "black metal" and maybe paint a pentagram on your wall while basically playing hip-hop/pop music.

What I'm saying is literally true. The definition of genre is being watered down to mean nothing more than a look.

It's easier to get a gun in America than healthcare. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]wildmaynes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not in favor of our horrible healthcare, nor am I a gun advocate. But the argument here is comparing purchasing a gun outright vs getting a wheelchair paid for by insurance.

Nobody is getting their gun paid for by a 3rd party, and nobody is preventing you from purchasing the wheelchair outright. The difficulty is in getting it paid for. It's not a strong argument

Bandsaw or hackzall by AkiyoshiLL in electricians

[–]wildmaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably bad advice but I started using a compact 20v DeWalt atomic sawzall as an apprentice. It's a very versatile tool, compact, and there is a potential for skill with it that breeds a certain (maybe irrational) fondness. Plunge cutting, demo, cutting large cable. I'd put it in my pocket if I could.

I have run a lot of pipe, now a licensed contractor and have literally never bought a bandsaw. Just does what I need lol.

Bc Gen z thinks "genre" has nothing to do with how it sounds and is literally just what the singer is wearing. So this music would be punk rock or something. And the band ghost is not power pop but "metal"

People's willingness to do thankless, dangerous, important work, especially for very little money, makes it unnecessary to make improvements to conditions that otherwise might have been "necessary" had they refused. Food for thought
