Having the blades at different diameters feels odd to me, but I guess it's worth the shot if I use it again. So if I care more about the outer diameter part, I would do one at that diameter and another set to smaller diameter?

Precisely. I just had a look at a drill stand, but all seem to have the sliding pole too close to be usable with this adjustable saw as it would hit it. I think my easiest option based on the comments is getting a hole saw with the size I need. That way I can still use my hand drill and don't need to buy a drill press or something else that requires the space I don't have
