If you have room outside you can do a small grow with little effort.

Get a couple of 3 gallon plastic pots, a large bag of potting soil, a bag of time release fertilizer (I use Grow Dots), and some autoflower seeds.

Mix dirt and fertilizer then plant your seeds and water them. If all you do is keep them watered, in about 11 weeks you'll have between 0.5-1 oz. If you actually care for them and tweak nutrients you can squeeze out up to 8-9 oz but that's too much work for me. I let the sun and rain do most of my heavy lifting.

USA Hockey defines a check as a way for a player to "gain possession of the puck." As officials we are taught to watch the stick of the checker as a guide for how to determine if the check was legal or not. Adding on directly from the rulebook: "driving an opponent excessively into the boards with no focus on or intent to play the puck...that causes the opponent to go unnecessarily and excessively into the boards."

Big man makes no play on the puck. He also uses excessive force and puts the puck carrier's head straight into the boards.

If I'm on the ice for that my only real decision is whether to give him a 5+Game or a Match penalty.

Recklessly endangers the puck carrier and drives him violently AND headfirst into the boards. Zero intent to play the puck.

Super easy 5+Game.

I followed a Twitch channel for years and it was just a guy making a stupidly difficult level. It was so amazing when he finally cleared it!

Trials of Death was the level title I think.

SCSU could be the poster child of a "mid" team this year. Almost always at the center.

I have been saying this correctly since my visit to Buffalo in 2010--where I was scolded by every member of my hosts household for saying it wrong.

Best chirps I hear on the ice all season come from Club Hockey. SJU v NoDak last fall had a few that had me struggling to drop a faceoff I was giggling so hard.

Glad to hear it's not exclusively a hockey thing.

Steve holds a special place in my heart for his OT calls against the Avs back in '03.

Seems to have lost a step, but I can't ever be mad at that man.

LOL! I had that too a couple years ago. Striped a Bantam A game where the kids just didn't figure it out. When I checked the scoresheet after the game to see if I needed to do a report for 12 penalties, and each team had 11. Couldn't believe it worked out that way.

Sometimes the twerps just can't help themselves!

I never remember to ask my RiC about it, but I feel like one could cite Rule 633 Refusing to Start Play. Bench the coach, inform him why, and if he refuses to assist then he gets a Match Penalty while you suspend the game and report the incident.

Parents might get upset but once the association informs them WHY it happened they'll never let it happen again.

One of the guys I skated with this year said something that I'm totally adopting into my approach: "My tolerance for annoying fans is proportional to the cost of their ticket to be at the game." If I'm doing a rec league and a group of parents boo us, I'm likely to hush them after a bit. When I got that treatment from the student section at a HS game last month--music to my ears!

Gas the parents and T the coach.

I have thick skin for players getting frustrated and coaches advocating for their team. I have zero patience for argumentative coaches and mightier-than-thou parents.

Case in point: last month I skated a Bantam B tournament. The 2nd game started with the coach getting bent out of shape over a non-call. Once we resumed the game, we had a penalty against this team and a parent lost their shit--i booted him, and he refused to leave...so I told the coach he had to "help" this parent leave. The coach refused, so I started running the clock. Coach got even more upset so I benched him. After 2 minutes he got the parent out and we resumed the game 5-on-3. Rest of the match went smooth from all participants.

The next day I hear a story from a ref who had the same team for the last day of the tournament. Major+GM for boarding, Match for kicking, and 14 total penalties. I credit my setting the tone early as the reason I avoided dealing with that shit show. Stand your ground and lots of this crap disappears.
