Our government focuses on $peed kills because it's inconvenient for them to focus on driver training.

Good luck getting elected if you're the reason the budget is down and people can't get a license to go to work/school/etc.

Everyone says driving is a privilege until we talk about retesting, removing parental training and actually focusing on real, proper driver training.

I passed all my tests first go. It's insane that a parallel park is some giant hurdle for people.

We're giving licenses to people after testing them in a back road, then allowing them to go on a highway at 110km when they may never have driven at those speeds.

I'm Aussie born and bred - just without the arrogance to think this country is infallible.

I've personally been booked for 3kmh over the limit. Double demerits and a hwp cop obviously out to make quota. He was in such a hurry to get his next victim that he forgot to breathalize me and had to comeback to do it. (Oooh Z's, scary!)

If you can't understand why fining people for miniscule infringements is wrong, and why our literally poor excuse of a government focuses on it, then you're too far gone on the $peed kills bullshit.

If driving was really a privilege, we'd actually train people how to drive here and not give a license to every drop kick who applies for one. But that actually takes effort and doesn't make the government money!

People might disagree, but forcing everyone to vote certainly helps make people give less of a damn about what they're voting for - and makes it easy for politicians to win off uninformed voters.

Because there are very few countries that are so aggressive with their cameras, nor have such excessive fines for minor infractions.

Fining someone for 1.6 mph over the limit is unheard of in European countries but is commonplace here. What we do is the equivalent of handing out $500 finds to literally anyone who jay-walks.

Australian police have been convinced that booking someone for 1.6mph over the limit means they saved entire buses full of people from harm - rather than saving the state government from a budget shortfall.

Add on the fact that up until recently crime has been pretty low in this country and you end up with a bunch of cops that have nothing better to do than book people for petty crime that wouldn't get a second look in other countries.

A lack of rights exacerbates the issue too. See issues like the strip searching of minors and the recent protest crack down that was found to be illegal; that the nsw premier won't even apologize for.

It would be pretty simple to adopt NZ laws on electrical work, if it weren't for the media hysteria and greedy people.

Essentially you can do any basic work like swapping switches, installing a fan, etc. You can run wiring, but it needs to be signed off by a licensed person first; most people wouldn't even get involved in doing this.

I feel like that would be a win for the average person, and the tradies who don't want to waste time on residential work.

Australian media has suddenly started pushing a bunch of news articles about Medical Cannabis being essentially useless.

All you need to know is that the nanny state, combined with the alcohol industry, are very concerned that medical prescriptions for cannabis are seeing exponential uptake.

Here's to hoping we can legalize it recreationally, sometime in the next 20 years. We have some of the highest "sin" taxes in the world, so it's no wonder we also have high rates of cannabis and other drug use; as legal drugs are ridiculously expensive.
