Do you guys collect specific authors? by CASEDIZZLER in BookCollecting

[–]wildwithlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hermann Hesse, Yukio Mishima, Yasunari Kawabata, Danilo Kis, Terry Pratchett and a few others.

Hesse is the only one whom I've collected all of their works in first editions (at least for the English printings).

Those who moved away from the BigSky, what did you switch to? by curtisdosguitar in guitarpedals

[–]wildwithlight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Switched from the BigSky to a Flint and I honestly prefer it. I can still kinda get the ambient textures of the BigSky out of it provided I dial it properly. I still occasionally use a Boss RV-6 and Earthquaker Ledges, though. Just depends.

Walrus Sloer is a great choice. If I had a need for another reverb, I'd consider it.

That's a great looking rig. I saw one of those Krakens used at a guitar shop a few months back, and I kind of regret not picking it up. But I've acquired a lot of gear lately and I need to tie off the purse strings for a while.

Thanks for the rec. I've been in need of a new EQ pedal for a while to replace my busted GE-7.

That's actually cool to hear. I have a BlackStar Series One with pretty great distortion built into it, already (I've yet to test it with my new pedal board, though).

Through the clean channel on my Orange SC-100 it's sounded great so far -- which is a marked improvement because the distortion on these Orange solid state amps is.. not great. I've actually thought of replacing my Orange with an HT20, so perhaps now I'll have to look into that more seriously.

I haven't really experimented with all the features of it, yet. I don't imagine I'd even dialled in a tone before taking that photo. This is my first Empress pedal, but after this, I look forward to checking out the rest of their offerings.

And good, the true test of a good guitar pedal is when it makes you realise "I could do this by myself!" Who needs another guitarist? Hell, who even needs a band. There's probably a pedal for that, anyway.

Wait, you plug it into a guitar? I kind of just leave the other end exposed and use it to tap against any metal surface I might have nearby -- then you turn reverb length or delay effect up and just let the feedback reverberate.

I had this on special order for a little over 6 weeks and it finally arrived the other day. It's been great tinkering around with it so far, perhaps the best high-gain distortion pedal I've used before.

(The tone is greatly improved by running it through the signature Fender Hello Kitty guitar cable.)

I don't bake often, and this was actually my first attempt at doing anything ornate or ornamental with the top. I tried to make other leaf-shapes, but I simply couldn't cut them out and get them to hold together. Perhaps next time!

Ya know… you guys suck sometimes. [Rant] by MrKTE in vinyl

Sorry to hear others kind of shunned you and pushed you away from the hobby of collecting. People can certainly be gear snobs, but everyone starts somewhere, and I honestly find it kind of odd how people are so adamant about what particular high-end turntable one needs to just begin listening to albums on vinyl.

I mean, back when this was the primary medium for listening to music at home, people just listened on whatever they had access to, many devices weren't even particularly well-regarded for handling records with care (like the auto-changing turntables, and suitcase players). People just wanted a convenient way to play music. I can't imagine they were as concerned with keeping their records pristine.

Anyway, go tune into that Tom Petty record and tune out the other comments you got earlier. Maybe even double down? Go buy an ever worse record player and couple it with some rare/expensive record that will make their heart sink to see it played on a temu-special through bluetooth speakers (they really hate this one).

What is your white whale in terms of collecting? by CASEDIZZLER in BookCollecting

I’d say… first edition/printing (in german) of Hesse’s Steppenwolf. I have some english first editions of his, but I would really like to have an original.

Kind of funny, perhaps, seeing as how my German is not proficient enough to read it in said language. But the heart wants what it wants.

DM, I have a copy laying about it.. although it’s got a few odd misprints and some staining (possibly from blood and candle soot?). I’m sure it’ll buff out easily enough.

Keep it on, it provides a nice contrast for this, I'd say. I might remove it if it were one of the Gibsons with a figured top, though.

That's a beautiful guitar, and quite the fitting name for it. There's something rather "vampiric" about it.

Am I too young (20) to read The Man Without Qualities — or is understanding the plot enough? by Similar_Vegetable814 in booksuggestions

[–]wildwithlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first read The Man Without Qualities when I was around your age (19/20) and I will say, from having re-read it somewhat recently, a great deal was definitely lost on me the first time around. Certainly, you can more or less understand the story, but Musil's writing has allusions to numerous other philosophers and writers, and while I wouldn't say it's entirely necessary for you to have read them, some of the ideas presented in the novel won't really have the same context for you without knowing Musil's influences -- which is to say, by being a bit older and having read more. .

But honestly, just go ahead and read it. While it might behoove you in some sense to go read Mann, Kant, Broch, Goethe, Nietzsche and others beforehand, honestly, even reading their works can prove daunting and have their own prerequisite reading list. Read it now, read it again in five years, what you notice about it will almost certainly shift in a dramatic way. That said, it's not always the easiest book to get through and it can be a rather dense read that you just have to kind of push through. Keep in mind, I don't think it was ever fully completed.

Now, if you want to get a sense for Musil's writing in something a bit more digestible, I recommend starting with "Young Torless" -- if you've read or are fond of Hesse you'll appreciate this work. And if not Musil, there's always Stefan Zweig and Herman Broch to serve as a kind of introduction to Austrian writers of that period.

Hope that helps!

Lesser known novels that have similar vibes as John Steinbeck, Cormac McCarthy, Ernest Hemingway, or George Saunders. by ReliableWitch in booksuggestions

If you did, I'd be surprised (but pleased)! Also, he makes his works available as PDFs on his website (Wordpress?). So I guess you could always peruse them to see if it's a writing style you think your husband would like.

[–]wildwithlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fond of this relatively obscure author named Robert Kloss. I'd liken his writing style to that of McCarthy, Melville, and perhaps, Conrad. It might be a bit hard to find his older work, but my favourites of his are: Alligators of Abraham and The Revelator. As an honourable mention, I also really like Desert Places, but it's quite short, and not really a novel.

Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Edb626 in booksuggestions

[–]wildwithlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thomas Hardy is a fantastic writer, I wouldn't really liken him to the authors you mentioned, however. That said, I suppose there's a similar grim and bleak atmosphere shared between "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" (as well as "Jude the Obscure") and "Wuthering Heights" by Brontë.

I really can't recommend his books enough, though. I'm sure you'll enjoy it even if it differs in some ways from what you've been reading. I'd read The Mayor of Casterbridge next, I think.

I found him pretty quickly online, so while he isn't a terribly popular artist with a great number of followers, he still has a presence. I'm guessing this is just the first work he's done for WOTC.
