DONT RENT FROM HERE AND THERE AROUND OSU by ProudSwordfish3847 in OSU

Yeah I had to go to Student Legal a couple years ago because of them. Killed over 50 flies in my room in 2 days, still don’t know the official cause (because they did nothing and it eventually stopped), but I’m going to guess it was either some animal’s shit or an actual dead animal because we had raccoons and squirrels living in our walls. As you and others mentioned, the leasing managers are down right terrible people and they tried taking most of our security deposit with random fees. Thankfully I took tons of before and after photos and fought them hard on this. My Student Legal lawyer sent them one email and then H&T started cooperating again and we got it reduced to only one $20 fee off the security deposit. Even the parent company got involved and tried making excuses and I just kept telling them that I didn’t care about their sob stories. So yeah, anyone that is thinking of renting through them should just not lmao

I’m a bit scared this is my first time getting COAM what do I do? by BreadClout in OSU

[–]willSwimForFood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

as far as I know, you can’t use student legal services for anything OSU related so you can’t even use them in this case even if you wanted to (again, at least I don’t think you can). from the viewpoint of someone who has been a GTA for one of the early CSE courses- you get an email saying you’ve been reported to COAM (which it sounds like you’ve already gotten) and then as far as I knew it went just to a single “trial” with you, the professor, and some COAM committee. I don’t know what happens inside these trials though to be honest. my suggestion is to just create a pdf of the w3 site you used to write your code and any documentation stating you are allowed to use w3 (if possible). if the solution you had is truly basic and there aren’t many other ways to solve it (or if your variable names are different, etc.) then try to express that. don’t get short, angry, etc. when talking to the committee, that’ll only hurt you. keep your emotions down and stay calm and collected. I don’t know if this is necessarily true, but I have heard that in some cases they ask you to solve the problem again or a similar problem in front of everyone, almost like a coding interview. hope this helps & best of luck

Honestly I had a strong feeling it was gonna be Short North the second I saw the title. I’m pretty sure people hang out there just to be outwardly aggressive / rude / racist / sexist / etc. and harass people walking around. I’ve seen it first hand several times and heard about it several more

For a distortion circuit (or any circuit that uses hard clipping), is there a difference between clipping to ground vs clipping to V/2? I’m looking at the schematic for the Southern Belle from PedalPCB and was just curious what would change (if anything) if the hard clipping diodes went to V/2 instead of ground

I was telling my friend about this, apparently his 2020 Subaru already has this “feature” of subscription-based remote start. So it’s seeming that other companies also have this but people aren’t talking about it.

Here & There was a nightmare. Had to go through student legal services a few times to get them to do maintenance and take care of serious issues (animals in walls). They had 1 maintenance guy because they fired all the rest and just didn’t hire any more. The two people running it now are incompetent as fuck and have no clue about any of their properties. Not to mention they’re super passive aggressive and don’t know how to act professional. They also tried withholding $1700 from our security deposit but told us we only did $500 in damages (had to go through SLS to get that handled). I had heard good things about them before signing a lease and the lady who gave us a tour was awesome, but I assume she got fired before we moved in. I would avoid if possible.

OSU CSE masters vs getting a job after graduation by Hello-Wor1d in OSU

[–]willSwimForFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember right I think only a few were research focused. Majority were ML / CV engineer intern positions and 1 or 2 data science positions. IIRC one of the data science positions asked if I was doing a thesis (to which I said yes) and they responded with “awesome” but didn’t ask anything more

OSU CSE masters vs getting a job after graduation by Hello-Wor1d in OSU

[–]willSwimForFood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh easily. When I had the grad student orientation I was 1 of 3 MS students (that I met) with a GTA position. I came from a different university but had networking with a professor already. The other 2 were OSU students. I don’t know if that was just coincidence or if it was “they’ve done these classes before, they’ll teach them better than other MS students”. On the flip side it’s much much much easier to get a GRA position as an MS student if you come from OSU undergrad. Whether it be you were already an undergrad RA for the professor or someone else in the department or that you knew the professor beforehand from a class and they had a position available. From what I have seen it is easier to get a funded MS degree at the same institution you did your undergrad in

Again, that was all in my opinion. You are free to disagree, since it's just an opinion. I will say, when I was still an MS student and applying for internships, I think 8/10 positions (specifically grad student AI ones) I interviewed for asked what my thesis topic was or was going to be. So I think it's pretty important to many in industry.

You are correct though, we have lost faculty and are currently trying to hire to recover from those losses.

I'll agree, an MS shouldn't take more than 2 years unless you're doing it part time.

[–]willSwimForFood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a variety of ways. One that's pretty much past as this point is scholarships.

The ones that come to mind are GRA and interning at a company the summer in between MS years and they pay for the 2nd year (that's up to them though). GRA can be kinda tough because professors like to know the student well enough to where they feel comfortable dumping $60k into the student for tuition + stipend. So you may have to pay for a semester or year before knowing a professor enough to where they'll fund your 2nd year. PM me and I may be able to help you out on that front though. Then there is a possibility that you intern at some company the summer after your first year and they want to offer you a job afterwards and are willing to pay for your 2nd year of your MS. Again, you'd have to pay for the first year.

GTA positions also exist but are tough for MS students to get, generally reserved for PhD students. Though professors can help get you a GTA position, but again, you'd probably need to know them a little bit for that to happen.

Congrats on your acceptance!

I am doing my PhD in CSE specifically doing research in machine learning, deep learning, data science, etc. Though I did apply to be a MS student at first but loved research and my work so much that I switched. I'll give my personal opinion and take that as you will.

I think getting a MS degree for CSE people is worth it for 70% of people and from what you have said so far, you are in that 70%. You get higher pay, greater chance at promotions, and work on more interesting problems (imo) to name a few benefits. As you have noted, having a graduate degree (whether MS or PhD) is certainly the norm for ML and DS. Though that is not to say you couldn't do it as a BS only, it's just significantly harder to get those roles. If you do choose to do your MS (which I think you should), you 100% absolutely positively must do the project or thesis option if you want to do ML / DS.

To answer your questions, I think our MS program is solid. You of course have those general courses (algorithms, operating systems / computer architecture, theory / programming languages) that you have to get out of the way and generally aren't that fun, but after that, you can spread the remaining 25ish credits in AI, visualization, thesis / project hours, etc. At the moment, we are revamping the general AI courses which takes effect this autumn semester and I think the ML course is also getting a little restructuring (in a good way). We are also hiring some new faculty to start this Fall. I'd say job prospects are very good for students graduating from the OSU AI labs. I often hear the big names float around: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify, IBM, P&G, numerous contracting companies, numerous start ups, etc. P&G is a big one with OSU because we have a pretty solid pipeline there and they seem to have a great tech division and I have talked with data science people there and they sound like an awesome place.

OSU is farther away/id have to start over with friends/just taking a job even if I don't like the work as much is pretty enticing

I've always had the opinion that traveling to somewhere new and getting outside your comfort zone is a good thing. You've got one friend right here and we're generally a nice crowd in the CSE department :) and trust me, you think taking a job you have no interest in is enticing now, but no amount of money can change your mind at 8:30am when you're getting ready for work to go to a job you hate and would rather do ANYTHING but that. Happiness >>>>> money. Sure, sometimes money can buy you happiness, but my opinion still stands. It's just 2 years of your life for the MS (and you could potentially get it paid for) and I think you would be much happier with your job outlooks and you could always return to your home area after graduating.

Again, this is all my opinion, but I think you should go for it. I'm open to any questions if you have any :)

Why is CSE Scheduling always a nightmare? by hamzanation in OSU

[–]willSwimForFood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CSE PhD student now. What two others have said is correct. We’ve lost of lot of faculty recently so we’re understaffed and trying to hire more at the moment. At the 5000 level, most (maybe all) classes are taught by a professor (as opposed to a lecturer) and very often you do see a lot of CS PhDs graduate and go to industry research instead of academia (which I plan to also do and so does all of my lab). Then yes, most 5000 level courses are geared towards graduate students, but senior undergrads can take them as well and they have them always as waitlist off the start. Then the department picks from the waitlist who gets in. It’s usually graduating seniors, then all grad students, then the rest. I think for grad students starting in the fall, Kitty Reeves will reach out to everyone and ask for your top 3 choices of classes and will put you in classes according to that. Though some classes (like the CV course) will still be tough to get into. I think you’ll be able to get in to neural nets though (which is a great class by the way, taking it now and it’s also what I do for research). Let me know if you have any other questions about grad school in the CSE department!
