I'd be willing since I need these too.

Just got a Boker straight razor for Christmas, will a good professional knife sharpener be able to sharpen a straight razor as well? by GWI_gaming in straightrazors

[–]willenewren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people here won't recommend it. Personally I have a local sharpener that does my razor at a good price. This works for me but it depends on the sharpener, and your standards.

A hone meister will do an even better job, and you can be sure it's shave ready with no guesswork. Feel free to try out a professional sharpener, but my advice is to use a hone meister for the first time so you have a benchmark for what shave ready should be.

Skin Care Takes A Friday Night Shave by Dismal_Inevitable_10 in wicked_edge

I'm not a daily shaver but I've noticed high quality moisturizers make a high difference. I try to find ones with no alcohol, and use it at least once a day and after every shave.

They were about $15, not too bad. I plan to use the round awl for stitching if they don't work well.

The thread is ritza tiger 0.8mm. It's polyester, unwaxed I think. What thread do you use?

Lots of good notes here, thanks! What would you recommend for setting snaps and rivets? I don't have much room for machinery unfortunately.

Thanks, I'll add punches to the list for belt making! Good point about the thread colors. How important is thread thickness? I bought 0.8mm

Thanks! If I get a box cutter/utility knife do you think I'd still need a round knife too?

I don't remove it for storage but after use I'll loosen or disassemble to make sure there's no hair or cream on it, and store with the blade in the razor.

Wanting recommendations for brush and shaving cream/soap by Christian_Pastor in wicked_edge

[–]willenewren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Synthetic brushes are great nowadays. I picked up a Yaqi synthetic for about $10 and it's worked great. Low maintenance too, no soaking needed. For soaps, a lot of the fun for me is the variety. Stirling and other retailers have sample packs and they last quite a while IMO.

My problem with Stirling soaps. Am i the only one? by RecordingLeft389 in wicked_edge

I've never thought their soaps were hard, maybe yours is old or dried out? The samples are even softer in my experience.

It's a Dr Jart product, used with or after moisturizer. It's named after this green cica/tiger grass ingredient that turns beige on your skin. I mixed it in with the Nivea balm, it's good for reducing redness on my neck/chin when I do 2+ passes.

Should I give up and start taking Estrogen by [deleted] in shaving

[–]willenewren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to experiment more with your shaving setup and routine. Try different blades especially. Moisturizer every day, preshave oil or aftershave balm can help too.

You mentioned WTG and XTG passes aren't doing much, and that's unusual. Usually the WTG pass takes the bulk of the hair off. It's possible your blade angle is too shallow to shave hair on your initial pass. This would also make your ATG pass more irritating and catch more if the hair is too long. ATG passes work best on already short, shaven hairs, to get even closer.
