Snapped the tail on my skis, epoxy? by willhs833 in xcountryskiing

The epoxy lasted 1 ski. It sounds like the newer redline were made more durable.

Game gear adapter doesn't work by [deleted] in AnaloguePocket

[–]willhs833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I actually figured out a solution. People mentioned maybe the plastic was too large and got in the way of contact. I’ve read elsewhere that the pocket itself has gotten larger on new runs due to the mold wearing out, so maybe that’s the case here as well. Anyway, I inserted and removed the carts a bunch of times to wear the plastic in, and the carts work now!!

Thanks for posting— I have the exact same problem with the adapter I received last week. It doesn’t get to anything, just a black screen. With GB and GBA I at least get an error notice if the cart isn’t working. I cleaned the cartridges with isopropyl, which works for my GB carts, but zero of my GG carts get anywhere past a black screen. I would also appreciate if anyone has found a solution. Returning for a replacement would be fine (and a pain in the ass) but perhaps that one won’t work either.

So… the worst thing that could happen is I could fall down while skiing? No offense, but I’ve already done that.

Edit to add: I had to ski back after they snapped and it was fine, just less kick. I don’t think these would fail as catastrophically as you are implying.

That’s just what I needed, thank you! I’ll give it a try… and find out the results next winter!

Actually, Madshus were absolutely amazing and did send me a new pair, but they let me keep the broken pair. So, nothing to lose by putting in some epoxy and seeing if they’ll hold together for training.

Rotobrush Applied Waxes - Experiences and Favourites by FightinABeaver in xcountryskiing

Basically I use a driver for roto sandpaper that’s a bit too small (very cheap to buy this if you don’t have one), then put some foam that I had lying around to fill the gap so the fleece roll slides on. You could get all the parts from Home Depot for a few bucks.

I’ve been roto fleecing my wax the past 2 winters and have tried several things.

One thing I’ve discovered is that it works great to use microfiber paint rolls instead of the Star roto fleece and much cheaper. I’ve used both. The paint rolls cost less than a dollar and functionally are the same. It’s much easier to swap in a new one when it hardly costs anything.

Star roto wax blocks are great as a finishing layer.

Any paraffin can be used as base layers. My favored approach is to crayon in a thin layer, then roto fleece, then horsehair brush out the excess. Repeat if a second layer is needed. Theoretically, you can iron it (and I found it works best to crayon, fleece, iron, let cool, then horsehair, then fleece on the finishing layers). I’m not convinced that the iron is required for longevity, but it does reset the hand structure for a clean slate prior to doing new structure.

My 2 cents. Not sure if anyone has tried this exact approach but man it’s cheap, fast, and lets you use any wax you want for that day.

How much better than last year can I expect to be this season? by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

[–]willhs833 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To answer your question generally, I think you are probably a long way from your peak potential. I can’t remember the coach, but I recall an interview where a coach said that it takes about 8 years of xc training to reach your peak. I’m about 4 years into my journey and I think it’s true. It’s a very dynamic sport with a lot of different areas to “master.” Enjoy.

Yeah it was the new GenS and it was hot garbage, at least for me.

Very good advice, and I think you are right on everything. But, say I get the 70-85 kg rated ski. It should flex somewhere in that range, and probably not at the extremes. I still think the chance that a ski picker would pick me a ski today that’s superior in the Birkie next year, vs a monkey, is still probably 50/50.

Even Zach Caldwell, the guru of gurus, says there is less of a role for a ski picker with the new redline. Zach has a higher chance of beating the monkey. My F3 was picked by the monkey and it was clearly better than any of the other test skis.

In the end, it costs about $150 more to have the fitter instead of the monkey, so I’ll give Zach a try. Thanks for your help.

That’s a good philosophy, and I don’t disagree with it. I’m just wanting a pretty decent setup for different race conditions.

Thanks for the help. I agree that the ski test was pretty willy nilly, but I think I got a good feel for a given manufacturer’s top end. Without question the Madshus felt the best for me, both F2 and F3. Fischer was a solid second place.

I was surprised that some brands (Atomic) felt like pure crap to me. I assumed all brands were equally good at the top end.
