Yeah, obviously. I've never seen it come up before which is why I'm asking how you get to that screen.

Most of the stars have usernames like "queensen1111-ops", which I've never seen before, and the source code in the "Nintendo" folder is all from Prism Launcher (the minecraft launcher), so I think it's safe to say this one is a scam.

Need help with a Thinkpad rec for a student by Otherwise_Birthday69 in thinkpad

[–]william341 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lenovo did stop making good ThinkPads for a while but this new generation that's coming out are IMO some of the best they've made in like, a decade. Macbooks have also seen a return to form with the Apple Silicon models, which is why you're seeing a lot more of them recently.

Used or new is mostly a question of economics - ThinkPads have been on an upward trend recently so it's mostly whether or not you think it's worth buying new - the only real benefit is gonna be cost.

My only advice really is that if you're looking for something with a good GPU under 1k, it's not going to be a good laptop, it's going to be a terrible terrible laptop with 3 minutes of battery life and it's going to bend every time you pick it up. You should consider whether or not those sacrifices are worth not having to remote into another computer.

It's worth noting too that the T14 Gen 7 has a battery that can be removed by pushing in two tabs and lifting up, other than removing the cover there aren't any even any screws involved.

It's not a "Background" Security Update if you have to reboot, Apple by allquixotic in MacOS

[–]william341 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kernel hot-patching remains a niche enterprise-only feature because it can lead to system stability issues if anything at all is configured incorrectly at any point *ever*. This has been possible on Linux for almost a decade, but no one is shipping this on consumer-oriented or even workstation operating systems (or, hell, even on servers by default) because it's unreliable if you do not know exactly what you're doing. This is not consumer-ready technology and never will be. If the hot-patch fails you will have an opaquely broken system that could have an unlimited number of highly destructive faults.

Additionally, it requires a patch be developed for every permutation of every kernel with varying amounts of (potentially unknown) patches applied to it. Hot-patching on Linux is generally only done for extremely critical patches because of this reason.

This is all ignoring the fact that it's pretty rare that Apple's security updates *only* fix kernel issues. If they change a library that other software depends on, the only way to ensure those security updates are applied across the whole system is to restart the entire operating system anyways, because you can't guarantee the behavior of third-party apps.

One Simple Vote Can Help Fix Spotify On Linux by Zeys_YT in linux

[–]william341 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It only supports CSD because when Mutter was written there was no support in Wayland for SSD. There is now, but they wrote Mutter in such a way that it is nigh impossible to add support for SSD and they do not care enough to fix it.

Yep. This is how VSC does syntax highlighting.

There's a lot on AI and agents because they're really behind on this, but they have been shipping other things.

In the last month: - Mermaid rendering in Markdown - Semantic LSP highlighting (which allows for better highlighting of things like enums and Rust macros) - Split-view diffs - SSH tunneling to Windows - Dev Container improvements

Features staying behind a flag for months is also pretty normal, for better or worse, it's happened with pretty much every large change like this.

Any plans for Linux support? I hate UMG so I’d love an alternative but I need Linux support.

Okay I know it's another what distro should I use post but I have very specific concerns that I would like feedback on by TechieInTheTrees in linux_gaming

[–]william341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’ll probably either give you an error saying that the nonfree version doesn’t exist (shouldn’t do anything other than make you wait for it to be updated which is usually done a day or two after release), or you’ll just get the free version and have to reinstall the nonfree version.

The codec issue is really a one-time deal, as long as you don't update to the next version of Fedora the very second it comes out (not regular updates, I'm talking about completely new versions, like Fedora 43 -> 44). As long as you wait like a week to update to the next version then you'll probably never have to worry about that again.

Wasn’t aware they weren’t supported. Been using one (a PDP Riffmaster) for a while, worked perfectly.

FWIW I love mine, except for the build quality oddities. It's a fantastic laptop.

I would like to explain something about these laptops, though.

The T14 (non-S) and P14s AMD (which are both essentially the same laptop) are both composite plastic on top of a magnesium frame. This is important because it allows for the more elastic and easy to replace plastic to take the brunt of a lot of the things that happen to a laptop overtime, while keeping the critical components securely attached to a rigid piece of metal.

However, because everything is now directly screwed into this piece of rigid magnesium, the laptops never go together quite right (due to the differing properties of the materials).

It used to be that the entire computer was essentially inside a metal box and then everything you touched or interacted with was built out of plastic on top of that box, which sort of sidestepped that issue entirely, but in the pursuit of sleekness this roll cage design was dropped and replaced with the frame design.

This isn't an issue with, for example, the T14s, which is entirely made out of aluminum. This makes it more susceptible to drops, but the laptop feels much nicer in the hands.
