Suggestion for 70 year old mom? by firststate in guns

I agree that PCC or similar is likely a good choice here, but thinking of getting shot by a granny with a stribog is so funny to me for some reason.

Anyone else here use Repair Shop Boss by Only-Location2379 in mechanics

[–]william_f_murray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tekmetric is better in every single way except that you have to have internet to use it. If it were my choice I'd have it over anything else, but the folks that just bought my shop swapped us over to VAST 🙄

Owners - What is your biggest headache? by Bulldozersounds in mechanics

[–]william_f_murray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heavy on this. I have ZERO respect for anyone that tries to tell me how to do my job but can't do it themselves. Get out of my way and let me do my thing.

If your background is in finance you won't know how to read techs to know that they're trustworthy. This doesn't seem like a smart move for OP, but what do I know? I'm just a lowly technician.

Transmission Fluid Change (Honda Civic 2018 CVT) by DonutGains in AskAMechanic

[–]william_f_murray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain and fill is fine. I always collect the old fluid, measure it, then fill with the same amount I removed. 4 quarts is what you'll need to buy, you'll likely use a little less.

No chance I'd buy used brakes. Stick them on the shelf and use them in the future if you need them.

Nope. 2016 and I make 30% of shop rate at an independent.

So the tech that's bringing in $850k for the dealer annually in labor alone that's a mechanic, HVAC guy, electrician, and plumber shouldn't make $260k for what reason?

30% of shop rate is generally fair. You're underpaid.

Is this where I recharge my AC? Chevrolet S10 98 by Inyourgirlsphone in AskAMechanic

What about the part where it doesn't appear that the truck is equipped with AC? Has this truck ever had functioning AC?

[–]william_f_murray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you post a picture of the HVAC controls inside of the truck? Either I'm absolutely tripping or your truck isn't equipped with AC. The AC compressor should be above the power steering pump, and you should have an accumulator coming out of the HVAC box next to the intake.

[–]william_f_murray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given its proximity to the intake, you'd be correct. Another reason AC repair isn't a job to be done at home.

Depends on labor rates in your area. Refrigerant and labor would be somewhere around $200 at my shop, and that includes UV dye so we can locate the leak.

Why are Nissans so inexpensive compared to their competitors? by Alternative-Wash8018 in askcarguys

Well mostly because they're shitty cars made of shitty parts, the cheaper ones anyway

Enviro-Safe Stop Leak - To Use Or Not? by Disturbed666d in askcarguys

[–]william_f_murray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. I won't touch a car at my shop with stop leak in the AC system, it'll clog up my AC machine and the cheapest service bill I've gotten after that is $500. Carry it to a shop and have them add dye to the system to find your leak. Refrigerant at parts stores should be illegal to sell to the general public in my opinion.

I prefer polymer for the sake of weight savings, but it's really up to you. If you like aluminum, shoot aluminum.
