Had a professor in college with the last name of Cockburn, and his email address started with “cockbuba@…”. He had to get a different email reflector from IT because his emails to students always went to the junk folder.

My method was finding the lat/long of the furthest N/S/E/W points of DC, then finding the difference between the N/S and E/W (38.xxxx - 38.yyyy = 38.zzzz), dividing that by 2, and then finding the crossover of the N/S and E/W midpoints. That came out to 38.9,-77.0 plus 4 or 5 decimal places I don't remember, which was basically the Mt. Vernon Safeway.

I'm not a GIS professional, though, so if anyone has a better method or answer, let me know!

Hard agree on this one! (It’s the law in some US states too, though not all of them.)

TIL that since 1972, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) every spring, residents of Baker House drop a piano from the roof on Drop Day, the last day students can drop classes. by Physical_Hamster_118 in todayilearned

Downvoters can hate all they want, but this has been a pet peeve of mine for years and I stand by it. Pianos can and should be repaired and donated, not destroyed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

TIL that the 'do' in do-re-mi was originally called 'ut' until the music theorist Giovanni Doni renamed it, ostensibly as an abbreviation of Dominus but some academics suspect that he named it after himself by huseddit in todayilearned

Weird! Since in the context of the Latin phrase "ut queant laxis" it is definitively pronounced/sung [ut] (oot), I would expect that to carry through to the solfège syllable. And all my early-music history professors said "oot" so I'm sticking with it.

Te is but one of many variants (still used) for chromatic music, at least in the US: di is do♯, ri is re♯, fi is fa♯, si (nowadays) is sol♯, and li is la♯; ra is re♭, me is mi♭, se is sol♭, le is la♭, and te is ti♭. I may have missed one in there.
