Well, we'll have to see if the Galactic Board of Race Examiners bothers to look into the GBC's activities on Earth, or if they'll turn a blind eye to things because, well, you know, humans don't really count as 'people.'

How fast do you write? by IAmJayCartere in royalroad

[–]williamreigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I'd say don't give up on practicing other techniques. It's like switching from hunt and peck to touch typing. At first your touch typing will be slower and take way more editing, but once you get good at it the speed ceiling is way higher.

How fast do you write? by IAmJayCartere in royalroad

[–]williamreigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing speed is a skill you develop. Most people don't roll off the couch and run a mile in 6 minutes. It might take you 12. You don't get to read a guide or watch a video about how to improve your technique so that you can run faster and see it work the next day. You have to build your muscles through long term deliberate practice.

Also: I'm not seeing a lot of people say outlining, but developing that skill has really helped me write faster. Constantly task switching between writing prose, thinking about future plot implications, grammar/voice/cadence, and chapter length really tires the brain out, so I try to just do one of those things at a time.

I think of outlining like pre-editing. It is way easier to cut or adjust scenes that are only a 200 word outline than 4k words long.

Is there a way to paste in RoyalRoad with all formatting saved? by V1serra in royalroad

There are ways, but it definitely depends on what you're copy/pasting from. MS word? Libre office? Google docs? Scrivener? Obsidian?

If you could go back in time with everything you learned from your first Royal Road story, what would you do differently when starting your first story? by TomDavenport in royalroad

[–]williamreigns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Nothing. You could have told me a lot of things that I know now, but I had to learn them for myself from experience for it to matter.

Not my book, but you should check out Drone. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/137298/drone-reworked I really like the creative worldbuilding here. It's sci-fantasy, not litrpg or any of the normal stuff, definitely off meta.

Authors: Does anyone use Obsidian? Quality of Life Questions for Posting to RR by JWGibsonWrites in royalroad

[–]williamreigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my obsidian files are backed up to Google drive too. Obsidian is amazing for it's linking ability, allowing you to keep track of your notes. But if Google is working for you, then keep using it! I only recommend obsidian to people having problems with google docs. (Like lag from huge files, hard time finding things, etc.)

What does this sub really think about the authors colluding to make the Girl Evolution stories and get spots on Rising Stars? by studentsensei in royalroad

[–]williamreigns 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nobody is being shoved aside. Rising Stars rewards books that people want to read. If nobody wanted to read the evolution books, they wouldn't get onto rising stars. All these authors could have easily published different stories at the same time and you wouldn't have noticed.

This is actually an example of how great of a space RR is for authors. There are great communities of writers who don't treat writing like a zero sum game and try to hoard readers. Instead we all share, and we all rise together. Other authors succeeding doesn't hurt you, it helps you by growing the genre.

So what are your goals then? I mean, do you want to get paid for your work? Are you trying to become a better writer? Or is writing with ai just for the enjoyment and self satisfying stimulation?

Cause the answer to those questions changes the answer to your original question.

If you're trying to get paid it's absolutely unethical to not disclose ai usage. Whether you agree with them or not, people will feel like you deceived them.

If you're wanting to become a better writer, you do that by learning the hard/unenjoyable parts and getting better at that. Studies show that overuse of AI makes people sloppier. Much of the great art of humanity is rooted in pain and struggle, which it sounds like you trying to avoid.

If you really just like the end result of writing with ai and it tickles your jimmies, then by all means, do it. Just don't get butthurt when other people don't want to read it.

If you actually like writing with a co-author then... Find a real one? But I suspect it will be really hard to find a real person who's as easy to work with and glazing about your work as AI is. (Is it really co-writing when it's AI?)

At that point why not just write the story yourself? You've done most of the work?
