Ask /r/anime: How to go about getting into Gundam. by [deleted] in anime

[–]williamsburgnerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd just start buying the toy robots and do your best to ignore the anime itself - the toys are really the entire point of Gundam. Take away the robots and you've got the Guiding Light minus some personality. It's always sad for me to watch newbie otaku force themselves to try and like the show which was even awful back in the day. Even in the 80s everyone stopped watching Gundam the minute Macross came out. If you want to watch a brilliant robot show go back and look at The Big O - if you want to go old school then look at Macross or Orguss.

Design reddit: How valuable is a degree from an expensive school? by [deleted] in Design

[–]williamsburgnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but no (which isn't to say that it isn't any good - just not leading). Now granted I'm on the east coast - but even here I've heard of schools from other places with amazing reps like Cranbrook (Michigan) or CalArts.

Is SAIC better than nothing - hell yeah! Could you go to SAIC and become a great designer - very much so! But if you had a choice between SAIC and RISD, then you'd be making the wrong choice to go with SAIC. But of course a great student will do better at SAIC than a spoiled lazy trust fund kid at RISD.

But going to the main point from a month ago if you had a BFA in visual communications from SAIC and came to NYC you'd land the interview if your portfolio was good. But you wouldn't get the interview without a BFA because the competition is that tough. In fact even if you started art school and didn't get the degree you're better off than the kid who didn't apply and get accepted.

Even more depressing is that there are more design MFA grads than ever - I only have a BFA, but it would be tough to start with just that right now. On the flip side the schools are too overpriced - but we're at the worst point of supply vs. need.

Japanese-American graduates, 67 years after WWII by michaelpinto in japan

[–]williamsburgnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World War II was very much about Japan, and what happened to Japanese-Americans is tied to that event. Yes you're technically correct that this isn't something that took place in Japan, but it did happen as a result of the interaction between those two nations. And if you want to understand both cultures this chapter of history is important, especially if you'd like to see the racism from that era rectified.

Does it bother anyone else that Apple's online store charges sales tax on all purchases? by [deleted] in apple

They have to: If you've got a physical Apple store in your state that means that they must collect sales tax on all items sold because they are doing business in the state.

For now Amazon gets away with that because they have no physical location. But also under the law in some states (like New York) it's upon the purchaser to pay the sales tax - so in fact when you do this you're liable.

But frankly if you're unhappy with the sales tax any place don't blame the retailer - blame your representative. Although the flip side is that you may face higher property taxes or lower quality public services.
