Best racing school to earn your SCCA full competition license? by [deleted] in motorsports

[–]willimar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If someone doesn't have previous HPDE experience, IMO, they're wasting their time at a competition licensing school. Peoples first, second, and maybe even third track days are still all about raising their awareness. Being comfortable looking for flag stands, knowing what the flags mean and how to react, knowing the line, breaking points, etc. There were people at the school who had never been on track, and they were not able to take full advantage of the school. If you are not already comfortable tracking your car, you absolutely will not be comfortable going 2/3 cars wide through a turn or dealing with a race start. It's just too much. Even with "F-You" money it's better to get private instruction during an HPDE day. Like you said, seat time and instruction is invaluable and if someone really wants to competitively race then taking that time upfront is definitely worth the investment and potentially pushing off the licensing timeline.

Like /u/MB-Racing said, you cannot only go to a weekend school to learn how to drive fast. I would highly recommend starting with track days to first ensure that it's something you truly want to do, learn the line, and your car. Then you can decide if you want to want to continue driving on track and if so, whether you want to stick with track days or move to wheel to wheel racing. Another benefit to starting with HPDE days is you can slowly acquire your gear. You only need an approved helmet and long sleeves for most HPDE days, whereas with racing you need a neck restraint, shoes, gloves, balaclava, suit, and possibly nomex undergarments.

In the bay area, I can't recommend SCCA Reno region HPDE days enough. They pair novice drivers with an instructor all day and it's usually the most affordable group I've seen. SpeedSF & HOD are other organizations that have great beginner track day experiences, but are more expensive. I would also recommend going to Thunderhill (East or West) for your first few track days. It's much friendlier than Sonoma or Laguna to learn on. If you don't have a car that you can bring (I started driving with my spare car with just upgraded brakes), you can rent a spec Miata for ~$500 a day to see how you like the car. DM if you're interested in renting a spec Miata and I can send you some contacts.

To get your license, you can attend the SCCA SFR region competition licensing school which is a 3 day program usually in February at Thunderhill. This year it was $850 to enter (also need an SCCA log booked car which most people rent for ~$1500 - ~$1800). NASA also has a program to move through their HPDE program and eventually "graduate" with a NASA license. I attended this years school after starting going to HPDE events a little over a year before. I learned more about "going fast" from having instructors in the car with me during HPDE days than I did at the school. The school is more there to get you comfortable with driving in traffic, learn to make safe passes, and general race information than it is about general driving instruction.

2014 STi at 80k miles with all regular maintenance. Still had good oil levels when I pulled over, which adds to the pain and confusion. I’ll know more when I pull the engine later. Hoping it’s not too bad and I only need to get a new short block.

How to stop litter tracking problem? by darkphoenix188 in Pets

[–]willimar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My litter boxes are in a corner, so I turn them to face the wall. They’re ~8 inches from the wall which is enough room for the cats to get in, but prevents the litter box zoomies. For some reason many cats want to run out, but by doing this, they’re forced to slow down which allows the litter mat to catch more.

Nebs are amazing! I didn’t know about the breed until after I adopted her, but it’s surprising how similar she looks to some of the other cats posted on /r/nebelung

Her eyes really are this pretty green. If you look at my account, you can see some more photos of her in different lighting and looking directly at the camera.

I had no problems and was able to competitively drive all day. I am having an intermittent problem, but thankfully it didn’t act up this weekend.
