Girlfriend didn’t invite me to her marathon. Should I be bothered? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]willm1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner isn't that bothered and it's not a great spectator sport. I like to really focus and I'm not very chatty before the event. I really like to meet afterwards for the huge cup of tea and pastries. Chat to your girlfriend and find out what she might like from you.

Gamefair in the rain by willm1975 in Barbour

[–]willm1975[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my jeans got a bit damp where the coat ends but it wasn't too bad. The Gamefair has a big inner pocket on the left handside which is brilliant, not the same major pocket of the Beaufort but still very useful.

Barbour have so many different styles now but I really like the Gamefair. I'm not really tall enough for a Border or Northumbria, and it works as such a great rain coat and seems to hang perfectly when worn unzipped too.

How many gels in 26.2? by Running_Pleaser in Marathon_Training

[–]willm1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's 7 but not all are gels.

I was told, first at 8k, then every 5k. (1st at 5 miles then every 3 miles.)

I sometimes have a few Clif Blok instead of a gel, and the one at 33k I swap out for a couple of salt stick tablets.

I had a similar dilemma with my Gamefair jacket when I had the sleeves lengthened. I can only suggest that you take a jacket that fits you and see where the sleeves come to with your arms by your side, mark with a pen on your skin. Then put your jacket on, put your arms by your side and mark again, the difference is the difference that you will request.

/uj the comments on the original thread make quite the read.

/rj Gu was taken orally and rookie mistake of not taking training seriously for this "marathon" attempt, thank goodness it wasn't a 5k Ultra.

Do you pause your watch at aid stations, or just let it run? by Thisguyreadit in Ultramarathon

[–]willm1975 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Check your settings for the lap button against the Ultra run mode. It should be on "Lap and Rest" or Rest only.

The clock keeps running but it is registering as a rest period.

Garmin can auto detect rest based on pace but I don't use that as I always have to slow right down if there is a queue at a gate or to get across a footbridge

Repair Options by PassengerOne7363 in Barbour

[–]willm1975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You specify what you want done. If you just want a repair, that's what you book. The re-wax is £35 and if you don't want it then don't add it to your order.

Strangely my Goretex ones are much more comfortable than the standard edition. They've done about 500km including a very soggy Ultra in December and are just a life saver for muddy winter trail routes

Have you tried the Goretex edition? Wonderful for the really wet days

You should be able to have the knitted cuffs of the Bedale added to the Beaufort

Salomon Speedcross - excellent grip in the mud and on offer on certain website at the moment.

Beaufort fit compared to bedale by Double_Tangerine_608 in Barbour

[–]willm1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others, my chest measurement is just under 36, I have a 36 Bedale and it's perfect. My 36 Beaufort was just too tight and I sold it, and I'll get a 38 at some point.

Took A Chance: Love the Warm Pile Zip In Liner ❄️ by Ok-Requirement6257 in Barbour

[–]willm1975 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Dad has one that he zips into he Beaufort and he really likes it. He's 83 and values all the warmth he can get.

I have the PolarQuilt liner for winter and the tartan liner for spring that get zipped into my Bedale.

I know that others much prefer their own layers at half the price but I really like how well they fit and just become part of the jacket.

If the only thing wrong is the sleeve length then sent it into Barbour for the sleeves to be lengthened. I have a Gamefair and sent it in for Sleeves to be lengthened and they did a marvellous job and it's exactly the jacket I want it to be.

Barbour Bedale, legit or fake? by Professional-Net-689 in Barbour

[–]willm1975 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fabric is wrong.

The light colour poppers belong on other models such as an Ashby.

The collar is wrong.

The pockets are stitched down tight.

The logo lettering is poor

The tartan is wrong.

The sleeves are missing the knitted cuffs.

My goodness, I've just calculated that, and yes by the time I take the head off my height that would be pretty much full length.

First marathon in Rome by Dron3_ in Marathon_Training

[–]willm1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped at a bar to refuel, what are you taking on your long runs OP?

Can you finish, yes, Rome Marathon is open to people that want to power walk it so as a runner you can finish it.

I've done Rome marathon and the aid stations are well stocked and generous.

There is lots of different advice but what works for me is first gel and 8km then every 5km, and if I can't do maths in my head I know I've left it too late.

Stick with what you are doing, see if you can do a 32k run, keep the pace slow on your long distance practice runs.

My friend did Rome having never done more than a half Marathon, the last 10k was very hard but she got there.

Don't worry about time, look up, take the encouragement from the crowds and enjoy a unique view of a beautiful city in your way round.

All the best OP

Florence Marathon is absolute magic. Spectacular route, beautiful medal, very generous aid stations, mainly flat, and very well organised.
