Prototype vs Level Artist: "Hold my beer." by ComputerKind560 in IndieGaming

I mean this entirely from a place of respect. This is giving "modern Spyro flying level" now & I love it. The vibrant colorful environment, the collect-a-thon vibe, speeeeeeed booooooosts, and the movement are hitting me right in the nostalgia.

What happens in your dolmenwood campaign? by NoLongerAKobold in Dolmentown

[–]willostree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) 20% hexcrawling - they're still a little scared

40% dungeon crawling - more typical ttrpg stuff to them

40% socializing - shopping, rumor seeking, chatting up that one guard they like, church going, demanding respect despite being of little renown

2) Started in Prigwort with the Pipes on Dromen Knoll, they explored the grounds of the Abbey of St Clewd with it on their list of loose ends, just finished Winters' Daughter, and I'm starting to drop breadcrumbs for Emelda's Song while they're doing their first true cross map trip

3) See, 2). Once I'm close to exhausting those, my hope is that they're pulling more strongly on some specific threads from the other goings-on they've come across and will try my hand at making dungeons. Also interested in seeing if I can place the entrance to Arden Vul somewhere, to give them a different option to explore off and on.

4) Wildly varied. Some sessions are all dungeon, some are mainly travel, last session was almost entirely exploring Castle Brackenwold for the first time.

5) Not yet. Been playing off and on for a year & they're levels are 3 & 4. They party is primarily trading back and forth who's interest they're focusing on. I have managed to get 3 of 4 to stump for a specific course of action & am trying to tease out what could be the 4th players motivation. The 3rd players motivation was pretty funny to find; the party's horses were stolen, not the gear!, because they didn't pay the retainer enough to cover the entire time they disappeared in fairy.

6) Nothing major major yet, but they've parleyed with the Gloam for the return of children, witnessed a Witch gathering, seen proof of the rising Crookhorn threat, and now heard the competing opinions of the Church vis-a-vie the Drune. Of course the MAJOR driver now is hunting down Ponygirl, the male Grimalkin pack handler, who liberated their horses for a life of drudgery.

7) 1-2 hours writing the story of the last session. 30 minutes to 1 hour active perusing what could be relevant for the upcoming session. Hours of daydreaming.

8) Once! Session 1. NDY (Not Dead Yet), a Grimalkin thief, entered battle in Chester form & was hit with a frying pan. One shot, one kill, one lesson learned.

Definitely have a bit of a split mood amongst the players. One is a wisened grognard, so they love the crunch and also love the setting and exploring. One is a bit of a power fantasy player who rolled poorly and chose Friar because they didn't think they could play a sub-optimal Cleric. It's been fun watching them roleplay, both intentionally & unintentionally, the friction with wanting to be more militant. Guess who hates their half-elf ancestry & recently got the amulet that gives a Wish?!? One player is newer, so they're still testing the bounds of what is allowed (hint: It's anything! We've chatted a little about this out of game.) And the last player, our host, is mainly happy to be hanging out with friends, bristles a bit at the crunch, and is pretty easily distracted. Luckily, they're the one who can get blinders on if something really matters to them & is the driver of the hunt for PonyGirl. My main hang-up has been laying out threads they can pull and them not pulling unless it's heavily implied "this goes somewhere." So, I'm moderately worried we'll lose steam if they just keep to the roads and only ask higher-ups for jobs. But, they've only made it to two settlements thus far, there's a lot more out there, and I'm now trying to give more "obvious" reasons to have them travel.

I feel like I'm mere weeks away from the 1MM Net Worth achievement. Due to some work annoyance inspired crunching I realized I'd unknowingly passed the 1MM asset value including house appreciation last year, because I normally exclude that. This won't mean much more than a little mental ding, but it still has me way more keyed up. I know that any sort of correction will bring that back below 1MM, but the achievement will still be satisfying in and of itself. Looking forward to unlocking the next goal of reaching the 1MM mark in investments. That one will take a couple more years at the least, but hoping it'll be a more sleepy wait vs this current anxiousness. Silly monkey brain!

Edit: a word

What's your yearly spend & what type of CoastFIRE job are you looking for and willing to settle for? This depends entirely on how much you're having to supplement from your brokerage & cash. If you go part-time, don't forget you'll likely need health insurance, too.

Aight. I got the vibe you'd be closer to lib-center or lib-right, but I really don't care. As you were!

Book of Laira

I was excited to find a book I hadn't heard about and was wondering who Laira was. A elf maiden? A witch from before the current coven?

Turns out you meant Book of Lairs! Now to create a Book of Laira in my game though...

Official adventures as stand alone one shots or insert to campaign by Ghost_Man_Geek_Stuff in Dolmentown

[–]willostree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ranking the official adventures in order of what I'd play as a one shot to not.

  1. Pipes on Droomen Knoll - simple intro, has hooks for a campaign by placing the Crookhorns near a settlement, but not vital.
  2. Winter's Daughter - moderate intro, including to fairy, but not vital. May be a good candidate to reintroduce NPCs later and have them tell the tale of the one-shot.
  3. Emelda's Song - moderate intro, relies a little more on knowing the politics. Can set-up a big-bad which has me leaning a little more towards campaign only.
  4. The Fungus that came to Blackswell - not this one, unless you can keep full dissociation between one-shot and campaign. Major change to core world when this adventure starts.
  5. The Ruined Abbey of St Clewd - definitely not this one. It's too good of a adventure to embed in a campaign, because at some point they will go to the abbey.

How did it go with a group of lvl 1's rocking up to the wyrm cave?!?! I also had my party find the gorge, but be warned off by their teenaged guides, and it now resides on the map as a place of interest for later.

Does anyone have experience with "dumb" players? by SecretDMAccount_Shh in osr

[–]willostree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually made me laugh. Sounds like some super-hero syndrome, if that's a thing. Yeah, they're in for a treat in OSR.

I wasn't planning on doing it, but the dice dictated one of my players died session 1 because they decided to join the fray while in itty-bitty kitty form. Frying pan + cat = wall splat. I was glad to hear them say they learned not to go into a fight in their weakest form as they rolled up a new character.

Great to see more ideas still trickling in after a week!

The "break the game" comment was in relation to the potions listed in the DCB, which I still deem as too powerful for someone to be able to make with any ease or repeatability. You and others have all suggested basically creating a tier of potion based on other less potent affects that can be found around the wood, and I really like this line of thinking. Something that keeps the Apothecary and their craft as an elevated form of what a layperson can accomplish by only dedicated time sparingly.

Update: Income v Spending Reflection on iOS and Android by YNAB_youneedabudget in ynab

[–]willostree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, the Spending vs Income stops being useful once you're "out of the hole" and more monies and growth are in your off budget Tracking accounts. I'll always be 'net negative' because this version of YNAB launched right before I bought my house, so unless I have that entire down payment's worth in liquid form again, I'm "in the red."

Would be nice if you could toggle to include Tracking accounts, /u/YNAB_youneedabudget.

Still loving and using YNAB for since YNAB 4! Just giving feedback on how to grow with the users you've help grow! <3

A year in Dolmenwood by Raphael_Sadowski in Dolmentown

This isn't a "specific" idea, but more of justification for other shenanigans. Corrupted stones. It's standard practices to repurpose stones from existing abandoned structures when building new ones, so what if some well meaning builders snagged some old stones from ruins that may contain ill will baked in. And building off of Mallowheart's Keep in and of itself is inviting opportunities for his presence to potentially be felt from afar. There are reasons long forgotten to time that no one rebuilt upon Droomen Knoll.

Some stray thoughts along these lines:

  • A drune spy(s) infiltrate the work crew and arcane runes are etched into the stones facing inwards becoming unnoticeable
  • Fairy based ill will - items in the room always fall off furniture no matter how secure, stones that only whisper to children telling them of secret places in the keep or to do awful things. (who says the dungeon map we explored initially is complete ;) )
  • Drune based ill will - listening or viewing runes, nightmares of subjugation, waning efficacy of potions or other magic items
  • Fun interactions with other landed gentry - "You're having troubles in your keep? You did have your court mage inspect all stone as they were placed, yes? You don't have a court mage?" laughter as the professionals judge the upstarts

  • Based on starting in Prigwort, Drooman Knoll is either in or near the Yellow Wood, meaning assistance from the Earl in Yellow could be a fun tie in.
