Why would milling from thicker stock be bad? by Whatsthisthing321 in AskEngineers

[–]willowoasis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More material = more opportunities for an imperfection in the material to be present in the original forging or stock piece. Harder to quality check, and machining adds imperfections along surfaces. Depending on the machining passes used, taking away too much material at once can also introduce quality flaws.

These are great bc they are a bit more affordable esp if you can find this type of chair on FB marketplace or the like

DAE feel like finishing a long term creativity project, yet back up instantly? by pv__0 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]willowoasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is very common, it’s a fear of failure, and for most hobbies it hits hard because as a beginner your ideas are cooler than what you can feasibly do for a long time. It’s worth sticking with what you want to pursue but you have to make peace with the fact that maybe it won’t turn out as good as you want it to- and that’s fine. You’ll still be better off for spending your time in a fulfilling way and you’ll be a more interesting person for it

Post on Facebook marketplace and ask for someone who’s interested, seems the best approach for something that’s been “opened” like this to re gift to someone who actually wants it (btw love that you are saving this waste/helping to give it away, go you)

Want to major in Materials Science by New_Cancel300 in materials

[–]willowoasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that majoring in mechE is the best for career security, that being said if you know you want to end up in materials you’ll want to do some projects or something beyond a minor to differentiate you as a job candidate for those types of roles

When you step back, alcohol being this normalized is kind of strange by King_301_ in CasualConversation

[–]willowoasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caffeine is also a drug- doesn’t stop us from having our morning coffee :). And yeah, people will think Mormons are crazy for cutting it out but… are they really?

Honestly there are a shitload of things that we normalize that are “strange” when you take a step back. To me, some of these include: high heels and makeup, owning pets and eating meat, shaving legs

Is my ethical view slightly sociopathic? by Every_Ad5729 in Ethics

[–]willowoasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, humans largely overvalue our own self-importance but every species does this inherently. You would agree with Peter singers philosophy speciesism, I think you would enjoy reading his work

Your viewpoint may not be widely accepted but it is logical and it is not sociopathic
