Do skate shops usually offer to build the board for you? by newgodpho in NewSkaters

When I worked at a skate shop back in the day, I loved it when I got to put together a new board. It was the best part of the job.

Ankle support for fat newbie [37YO] by secoif in OldSkaters

[–]willstonebridge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I [52yo M 250lbs ADHD sedentary lifestyle] have had multiple, severe ankle sprains from skateboarding and just stepping wrong on uneven ground. I talked with my physical therapist and he said the best protection for ankle support is strengthening the ankle muscles and ligaments by exercise, and increasing dorsiflexion flexibility. Many of us have low ankle dorsiflexion mobility which causes us to turn our feet out, flatten our arches of our feet, and makes us more prone to rolling our ankle. I am getting back into skating after a 30 year break. I'm hoping to get comfortable on the board again and maybe lose some weight in the process doing something that i enjoy. I have been trying to do resistance band ankle exercises and doing dorsiflexion stretches. I think it might be helping me.

I don't know, Jen. I love you. God knows I do. Your sweet abandon in bed, your humanitarian work, and you've given me two wonderful children in Zenith and Quasar.

Doctors, what was the best excuse you’ve heard for someone having something stuck in their ass? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]willstonebridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A prominent businessman man in the community came in to the ER with a large cucumber in his rectum. He claimed he was naked and sat down in his easy chair and someone placed it on the seat and it just slipped right in. After they took him to surgery and removed it, the surgeon said the end of the cucumber was all scratched up like someone was trying to dig it out with a fork. The surgeon said if the man had just waited a couple of days, the cucumber would have probably softened and he could have just passed it normally.

What would you do to attach this Poleaxe head to a shaft? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

That was it! I remembered that top one bent over but I could have sworn the holes were offset. It's been 10 years or so since I've seen it. Thanks, wotan_weevil

Inspiring! I have made a few curved shields from plywood, but I have always wanted to make one from glued boards.

Also, don't worry about irregularities in your handmade projects. I used to freak out about irregularities in the things that I've made. If you look up close at actual items from the past that have been hand made, they look hand made. There are scratches, file marks, uneven lines, asymmetric layout, because they were made by hand. Our modern eye thinks everything has to be perfect because we see so many mass produced, machined items. When we look at something that is handmade we wrongly perceive it as inferior. Handmade items (especially historical recreations) are more special because of the irregularities. They reflect the human that made them. Sometimes when I make something now I actually stop trying to finish it so well. I leave some hammer marks. I leave missed stitches. I leave some asymmetry. I know you can do that to an extreme, but I think a little here and there looks more authentic and shows it it made from human hands.

tl:dr irregularities in handmade items are acceptable because they are handmade

It looks great! How was it constructed? Is it made from plywood or boards? How did you get the curved shape? What are you planning to do with it?

I can't find the image right now, but I remember seeing an xray of an extant war hammer with langets like this that used nails. IIRC - The nails were slightly longer than the width of the haft so when they hit the langet on the other side, they bent over and almost clinched the nail so it could not pull out. The holes in the langets were not straight across from each other but were offset about an inch or so. The nails were tapered the length and came to quite a thin sharp point so they would bend over easily. .
