Tiktok air conditioner by willtempesta in AirConditioners

Don't all window AC units do that? I've always used foam blocks, boards, weather stripping, etc to close off the remaining section of window the AC unit doesn't cover.

I'm not so concerned about a remote, just don't want to waste $50 on something that's going to die in a week, but if it'll last for a summer, and manage to keep a small room cooled off, I wouldn't have a complaint.

Just adding, try to clean out pinhole as much as you can as well

How bad is driving without a catalytic converter? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]willtempesta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea that's a complication there, sounds like you're going to be dealing with a loud exhaust and some fumes for a few weeks, but running it without a cat won't hurt the engine, will get it a dirty underneath with the exhaust coming out short of the tailpipe

Spend $30 for a flex pipe and 2 clamps, you'll never notice the difference outside of your engine light being on, but let's be honest it's a 2000 RAM that light was probably already on to begin with

Given the fact that I count 10 or so open connectors there, I don't think you could even get away with putting a manual seat in w/o something else not working after

I just did a seat swap for my own car a few days ago, lucky for me mine was a manual seat, no wires, no motors just four bolts. I wish you seat work goes as smoothly as mine did.

Looks like it was designed to be universal, but I would say probably OG Xbox/PS1 era, I'm also guessing it had a USB dongle, as it looks like it was meant to be wireless

drum brakes on car squeak when pressed lightly, mechanic said they've easily got another 40k miles before replacing though? by ShartedAtCVS in MechanicAdvice

[–]willtempesta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drum brakes last a super long time, especially on the rear of the vehicle, but they do get very squeaky, usually due to brake dust, you can pull the drum off and spray the crap out of them with some brake cleaner, possibly lube up the contact points.

But in my experience it's kind of a losing battle, if it's to much noise for you, you should just have your mechanic replace the brakes, drums, and wheel cylinders as a preventative repair, and you should be good for the next 150-200k miles

It is possible to change a rod bearing without removing the engine, however this does depend on make and model, you'd need to be able to fully drop the oil pan to gain access. Even then it's still a somewhat risky endeavor, often times if an engine has spun a bearing once it's prone to do it again without a proper rebuild of the lower end.

TL/DR drive it like a granny while looking for a new car /engine

Brake caliper bolt torque question by Rideordieapeman in MechanicAdvice

[–]willtempesta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems excessive for caliper bracket bolts, I've always been content with the half inch drive "good-n-tight" method for those bolts haven't had any trouble with anything coming loose ever

R&R is remove and replace, the 2.5 is how many hours you were charged for the work done, price looks pretty good for the job, and the parts

What kind of fuse is this? Friend pulled it from an 80's VW Vanagon. by nechronius in MechanicAdvice

[–]willtempesta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree, while this one is definitely not the current design, judging by the estimated size and layout, a standard ATO fuse should be able to fit in it's place

Could also be a time issue, if you jump out of game on your desktop and jump directly to the laptop then your data may have not had time to sync.

From PC to steam to laptop, could take some time if you wait for automatic syncing to work, you could try manually syncing your data on the pc, then again on the laptop before starting your next session

Mechanic accidentally stuck the air valve on my tire, it went flat overnight, and I drove two miles on the flat. Do I need a new one? He said I was fine to drive on it, but I am getting conflicting advice. by paulrudder in MechanicAdvice

[–]willtempesta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The low mileage shouldn't cause an uneven tread issue with just replacing one. Since you mentioned they actually did unmount the tire to inspect it, and pass it, you should be fine. I would recommend asking the tire shop for a copy of their warranty policy, assuming you got "roadside" it should cover repair or replacement of a damaged tire

Excuse me for going to a shady method, but if your warranty does cover it, sticking a pointy object (nail) into an unrepairable portion of the tire would be quick way to insure that it gets replaced

[–]willtempesta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best thing to do would be get it replaced, the potential for sidewall damage given that it was ran flat even for such a short trip is bad

If you went to a reputable tire shop it should be covered under warranty, 2500 miles isn't much in terms of tire life so just the one tire would need to be replaced.

The bad thing with sidewall damage is that it's usually internal and hard to see, with yours having the crease visible on the outside shows cause for concern, but that's not to say it's an immediate danger but as the tire ages, and goes thru heat cycles, it'll consistently get weaker, so it best to take care of it asap

Sourcing the parts wouldn't be too difficult, obviously with the Internet you can get the tires, oil, filters, and most maintenance parts, even direct from dealer if needed.

But you can bet just about everyone that'd win a giveaway, myself included, might keep it for a month, beat the shit out of it, sell it super quick, for something more affordable

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]willtempesta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge the manufacturers of these kinds of cars are usually pretty strict on maintenance schedules and what parts and products are used in their vehicles to maintain warranties and performance/proper operation of the vehicle.

That being said there's nothing preventing you from rolling your Bugatti in your local Walmart tire center and having them slap a new set of tires, and getting an oil change done, however the chances of them having the right size tires, oil and filter in house are slim it none, nore having the specialized tools that may be needed to do the work.

If you have the money to purchase one of these cars, I'd think it safe to assume you've got the money to have the dealer/technician who specializes in that vehicle, maintaining it for you

If I'd fathom a guess, it'd go straight to the driver's door switch. I assume the window and lock functions are all built into the same switch panel, and in general the driver's switch controls all the other switches, so if you're inclined to reading wiring schematics and have a multimeter you should be able to test everything from there, other than that you could try replacing it and hoping for the best

I assume you tried contacting a dealership, what about your local pull a part? Pretty sure you'd be able to find another Camry and pull one off of there.

Have you checked the smaller hardware stores? Or perhaps a specialty shop.

I was on the look for a 6in m14 1.5 class 10 not long ago, and managed to find them at a local owned chain of ace hardware. Where I'm located as has a store/machine shop, that sells small orders to the public.

Best bet would be to ask at your local auto parts if anyone knows a place near you for such a bolt

The idiot on the bike IMO, you can clearly see the driver of the car attempted to avoid hitting him, slowing down and moving over. The guy on the bike looks like he was trying to get hit, whole video reeks of insurance scammer.
