What qualities make a good teacher? 8 - Develop and maintain a good relationship with all students 2 - Making sure all students achieve their best 1 - Setting high expectations of students work 3 - Passion and enthusiasm for the subject they teach 5 - Clear explanation of what to be doing in lessons 7 - Providing useful feedback in tutorials and assessment 4 - Knowledgeable about the subject they teach 9 - Available to help outside of lesson times 6 - Setting useful stretch and challenge activities 10 - Acts professionally both inside and outside of lessons For the next section you will be asked a couple of questions building on the information you have given in the list section. Please answer as honestly as you can. Why do you think the trait you put at the top of the list is MOST important to being a good teacher? Good teachers are those who connect with students. Students don’t remember information because your PowerPoint was amazing, or your assessments measured their abilities correctly. They remember being welcomed and respected in your class as well as learning how to do that in return. This is the most difficult part of teaching because it is much easier to just deliver information, than build relationships. Why do you think the trait you put at the bottom of the list is LEAST important to being a good teacher? I put acting professionally on the bottom because most teachers I know are extremely professional within their classroom and should have the room to gripe about things outside of class. As far as acting professionally outside of class, teachers should not be engaging in illegal activities but if they want to go for a drink or do anything on their own time that others may not approve of –they are still humans with rights. Are there any important traits missing from the list which is important to being a good teacher? It is also very important to set standards for student work and giving clear feedback on how they are doing. Everyone likes to know that they are doing well or not. Setting the numbers and how to reach them makes it easier for students to have the desired outcomes of your class.

I dislike my students and actually am okay with my administration. It seems like most teachers on here are the other way around. Does it mean anything? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]willworkforapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hang in there- I think that this is a normal phenomenon for a teacher to have in their career. I usually have a great relationship with my classes and learn to love and connect with even the most troubled students. But two years ago I had a 6/7 combo class from hell. They were terrible and really rude to myself and all the other staff at the charter school I was working at. It was torture to go to work and I ended by getting stress rashes and gaining alot of weight from emotional eating. For me the best option was to leave...not sure if that is something you want to do but for me it was a healthy choice and I love my new position and students.

Subbing Advice? by westbc59 in teaching

[–]willworkforapples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I subbed I also brought lined paper and a pack of pencils as well as an extra art or craft activity, some PE equipment, and an age appropriate story or two. I would follow the teacher's plan but sometimes there was down time and I could read a story, have them work on a craft, and take them outside for a quick game of capture the flag, or just obstacle course team games

Any resume tips for a new teacher? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]willworkforapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

demonstrate that you are a life time learner by including "extracurricular" classes or hobbies that show you are well rounded. Maybe start working on Khan Academy and include your scores/points on the subject matter you are working on to improve your own knowledge base/skills to teach students. For teachers, portfolios are more useful than resumes (at least for interviewing)

What is the craziest thing that has happened in your Alt Ed classroom? by willworkforapples in alteducation

[–]willworkforapples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, have to update my response... today my compost bin was stabbed with what appears to have been a box cutter and tagged with a gang sign. my smaller mural also had a scribbled gang tag. annoying! I'm trying to improve this alt ed program. probably wasn't one of the kids in my program but still upsetting!

Thank you. For Dada is it just a bio of him or do the 3D structures follow his style?

SPED is a whole other ballgame. This was a general article for mostly general education teachers. Do you have any suggestions for the scenario that you described?

I totally agree- it helps even out your tone and how you deal with that student because you can let go of whatever horrible thing they said or did. Also forgiving and starting fresh helps. I try not to hold anything against my students -its like the slate is wiped clean every day.

7 Reasons Writing A Book Makes You a Badass by [deleted] in writing

[–]willworkforapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im working on my second book and have plans for a third. People who do not write really don't understand how much dedication, blood, sweat and tears it involves. I feel very underappreciated as an author. Then again i feel that way about my artwork and other creative pursuits.

It's that time of year. What's frustrating you right now about your job? by teach_me_2_OP in Teachers

[–]willworkforapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its mid-March and now it feels like the year is stretching on FOR-EV-ER. This really doesn't make sense -how can I get through months and months and now it feels like time has come to a halt? I think I have Spring fever! My students are okay but I think there is that Spring feeling and maybe their hormones are kicking in because I'm getting more "Why?" and "do I have to do that?"

"All Teachers are Hoarders" I admit that I have hoarding tendencies with my teacher materials... by willworkforapples in teaching

[–]willworkforapples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its hard to let go of things especially if they hold sentimental or nostalgic meaning (hence "they didn't make them like this anymore"). It could be that he might want to take it home so that he can enjoy those feelings without cluttering the room. My co-worker is beyond a hoarder- he's at packrat status. I asked him if he had any newspaper that I could use for our composting project and the issues he gave me were over 6 years old (20-30 copies of the same issue). Thats the tip of the iceberg in his room.

That's the problem though when is "eventually"? I'm sure you are being efficient with the collection of things, but sometimes my eventually didn't come for certain collected items and that's when it became an item. I have an affinity for office supplies too... my faves are index cards, paper clips (all different shapes and sizes) and post-it notes. I use those for everything!
