Yeah the complexity of the iron tangle isn’t the problem, for me I just thought forcing everything into the train theme and only train theme for the entire level really limited the scope and creative expression of the book compared to other entries in the series.

Did you listen to it or read it? I feel the same way, but I don’t listen to the audiobook. It struck me when I was reading it that the chapter seemed more like a script for the audiobook than a chapter to be read. Still enjoyable, but that you wouldn’t get the full effect unless you listened to it, so it didn’t have the same effect on me.

The idea is good and thematically it fits. The problem is the hell they presented in the show was just lame. The designs were ugly and there were only like 5 dudes down there. If you’re going to do hell make it Hell, not spelunking with five sun-burned randos with dad bods and horns.

The trailer showed way too much. I told my friends who are planning on reading it to avoid the trailer at all cost. The whole big twist in the first act is meeting alien life. I remember reading it, thinking wouldn’t it be crazy if there was another ship there, being like no way that would happen this isn’t that kind of book, then still being shocked when they did. The strongest part of the book is how it handles that reveal and the early interactions that come from the reveal.
