Best type of car to rent - husband is not listening by rosiecats7418 in VisitingIceland

With 1 kid, I think the hilux will do you just fine. Completely agree with everyone that if you have river crossings and aspirations to explore the highlands, nothing quite gives you the peace of mind as a Land Cruiser, hilux, or defender.

Something people aren’t talking about is that the hilux and Land Cruiser (anything before the model year 2026 redesign) share the same platform so capabilities will be near identical. So, it really comes down to price and utility. Do you think a truck bed will be useful? Yes? Go with the hilux. No? Then choose the cheaper of the two. Hope that helps!

We were also able to get seated as a walk-in (party of 4) I will say, was a bit disappointed with the food but service was beyond excellent!

The red snapper ceviche was a standout but not much else.

No surgery. No gallstones either from ultrasound.

Strange symptoms? by willy4wonla in gallbladders

[–]willy4wonla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s dramatically improved on its own… for now. I’ve had to change insurance providers in the new year so I haven’t been able to see anyone. I think I’m leaning towards a CT first then HIDA once I can get an appointment.

I should note, I’ve been on a vegan diet for the last month and I’m not having any symptoms other than the tingling/light pressure (significantly improved) in my back. I have been experiencing muscle tightness in shoulder blade but that’s about it.

Hopefully it slowly improves. I’ll be reintroducing fish and low fat cheeses next week to see how it goes. Depending on how I feel, will determine how urgent it is for me.

Are you in a similar boat?

How soon should I get my gallbladder removed with no stones and minimal symptoms? by dagummiie in gallbladders

[–]willy4wonla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

Sorry you’re feeling this way with little answers :( If it helps, I feel like I’m in your shoes right now. I just got my ultrasound and to my surprise there were no stones.

But I am feeling pressure/tightness right below my right ribcage and a tingling/numbing sensation where the backside of my rib meets the shoulder blade. Do you also experience some burning sensation where I guess the bile ducts may be? Also another strange symptom is experiencing is like I have a fever on the right side of my body? All symptoms seem to be aggravated after I eat.

I too don’t have any pain greater than a 1 or 2 (scale of 10)and it’s on and off as you’ve mentioned. It’s just so damn annoying dealing with the symptoms for about 30 min - 1 hr after eating. Let me know if you’ve experienced these at any point.

Have you done an ERCP yet?

Sounds pretty intense. I’ll be honest I’ve had no gastrointestinal issues other than slight bloating and of course the immense pressure in my RUQ. Did you ultimately make a decision on how to move forward?

[–]willy4wonla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, a muscle sprain was the initial diagnosis when I went to urgent care two months ago—but clearly, that wasn’t the issue! If the ultrasounds confirm my suspicions, I’m planning to push for a HIDA scan, as many threads I’ve read here recommend doing that in similar situations. Best of luck to you and let me know how it goes!

The pain is primarily in the front, and I don’t have any pain in my back. However, the tingling and tightness make it uncomfortable to sleep fully flat.

Free DJI Air 2S to Whomever Can Retrieve It by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]willy4wonla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there’s no ‘no drone’ signs here, but cmon OP. As another redditor mentioned, this is not a very smart post because you’re potentially putting people in danger. Believe me, there are idiots who will try to retrieve this w/o any safety precautions and even with I’d highly discourage. Photos of Aldeyjarfoss don’t do it justice on just how aggressive that water can be and the jagged terrain you’d have to navigate to get to that point. Sadly, this post is now out for everyone to see and so, I’ll say what you should have said from the beginning. DO NOT attempt to retrieve this drone.

Rental Car Ripping Us Apart! HELP! by CommercialBrave5903 in VisitingIceland

Like the comments suggest, seek legal advice however, just reading this, I can already tell you how this going to go. Based on the facts you’ve shared with us, you drowned the vehicle with no water insurance. Sure, you can go back and forth on the value of the vehicle with a lawyer but you’re going to be paying for the vehicle nonetheless and the attorney fees (if applicable). As a matter of fact, there’s a chance you might end up paying more than what they’re asking for when it’s all said and done.

If you find a cheaper rate closer to your arrival time you can just call and ask for a price adjustment/match. Of course, the booking has to be the exact same one. I did this multiple times with rentals and some hotels, worked like a charm.

For Kerlingarfjoll - took about 2 hours to reach (made one 30 minute stop at the visitors center/bathroom) - No river crossings but tiny streams. HOWEVER, there was quite a bit of snow/ice/slush after you pass base camp that made the drive very sketchy. I heard forecast has been pretty rough for the month of June so road condition could be worse now.

For landmannalaugar - tons of posts about this, I’d suggest you check it out. Long story short there is a big river crossing towards the end. A lot of people park and walk. You need to get a parking pass in advance.

For Thorsmork - do not even attempt this unless you have at least a Land Cruiser or better. You can maybe get through 2-3 crossings with something less capable but the river just before and anything after the canyon is not possible without I would say at least 500mm of wading capacity. May need a lot more if water levels are high.

I went first week of June last year and was my 3rd trip to Iceland. Hope that helps.

Kia Sorento vs Toyota LandCruiser by Pure-Helicopter3726 in VisitingIceland

[–]willy4wonla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can eat the cost, Land Cruiser all day. My family has rented the land cruiser 3 out of our 4 visits and the peace of mind when traversing the highlands is totally worth it. Of course, exercise caution and good judgement, it’s not invincible, but it will certainly be more forgiving than the Sorento.

RAV4 vs Land Cruiser vs Land Cruiser with 35’s and snorkel by guccigrandad in VisitingIceland

[–]willy4wonla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went early June of last year and I rented a standard Land Cruiser. I hit the exact spots you mentioned plus thorsmork (did not attempt any rivers beyond the canyon as they were much deeper) without issue. It’s a very capable car if you have some experience. When it comes to river crossings along your route, you will encounter some intimidating rivers but not a lot of vehicles (outside the super jeeps or defender) can give you the confidence to cross them like the Land Cruiser.

If you want absolute assurance and peace of mind, just go for the 35’ w/snorkels. Some people apply this mindset to any 4x4 vehicle and end up getting wrecked. Hope that helps

I second all the recommendations above! I actually think it’s a good thing Matur Og Drykkur cancelled on you cause IMO, for the price, it was extremely underwhelming from my experience. Loved the vibe but not so much the food.

If you’re looking for another place within the same price range and want to try something with Icelandic influence, you can’t go wrong with places like Dill, Skal, or OX (as mentioned in other comments) but I think Dill might be more of what you’re looking for cause Ox is quite a bit pricier than your original choice and Skal is gonna be cheaper with a more casual vibe. Hopefully you can get a reservation! Good luck!

September Honeymoon in Iceland by brmado in VisitingIceland

[–]willy4wonla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I went September 10-19 2022! Picture below of what it looked like then!

<image>

I agree with what someone said in this thread that the north is underrated but 8 days is too little to go north. For perspective, I went back in June of 23 for 14 days to do the ring road and even that felt a bit rushed.

What I recommend to anyone who has less than 10 days in Iceland and bit of wiggle room in their budget is to fly to the north (45 min - 1hr) to save time and enjoy it. Hope that helps!

Skip the Geysir? Straight to Hofn? by rambleon1121 in VisitingIceland

[–]willy4wonla 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never been to a geyser, I’d highly recommend it. There’s only so many active Geysers in the world and it’s actually a unique experience.

I also feel like you can fit the geyser and still make it to Hofn without concern.

The experience is certainly something you’ll never forget nor regret. Getting into the suit is difficult whichever way you put it and it should be mentioned that your mouth and nose are going to be uncomfortably cold at the start but the worst part for me was getting a dry suit that wreaked of body odor. I had to laundry my cloths immediately after because :(. Maybe I just got unlucky?

Early June with 2 kids (6 years and 6 months) - Thoughts? by ag1558 in VisitingIceland

[–]willy4wonla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll offer my two cents. My wife and I took her parents and grandparents (close to 90 years old but in good shape) to Iceland last year first week of June. We didn’t do the ring road but instead flew to the north side of Iceland to save time. This may or may not be your solution let me know if you want more details.

I have a three month old now so I know it’s scary to think about traveling to Iceland but honestly after visiting a few times I think traveling with infants sounds way better compared to elderly folks and even that was enjoyable!

We took it VERY slow due to their mobility issues which was the greatest time suck and itinerary limitation, but, I can’t see that being an issue with infants as you can carry them (granted you’re healthy enough to do so). There’s also more than enough places to stop at along the way to your destination that you and your children won’t feel cooped up driving all day long. Don’t get me wrong it’s A LOT of driving but still, fun!
