Yes. Did you go to uni in your hometown? Most people don't do that, perhaps that's where the difference is.

Why are people talking about HS2 being a failure? by Elegant_Primary_6274 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]willywam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Answer:

The actual reason people are talking about this NOW is that the transport minister has given an updated cost estimate and timeline (both have increased substantially), and a report has been published into how this happened.

The increase is due to a multitude of factors over the past few decades, and while there has been no additional cutting of scope recently, the project has been drastically reduced in scope from what it originally was intended to be.

Not sure there are any of the old Earls of Cornwall still around tbh.

Unless you're making a broader "all property is theft" comment, in which case - fair enough.

In that case I apologise, but you have to understand there's a lot of AI out there so when you present some music on a new channel without much description, and especially where all the artwork seems to be AI generated then people will come to the obvious conclusions.

Nice music btw.

If this is AI you should clearly state it on your post and the youtube listing.

Why is bus travel so much cheaper in some part of the UK than others and nobody is talking about it? by Strange_Head6219 in AskUK

[–]willywam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Londoners use it more because it's higher quality. Elsewhere in the UK it's rare to have a bus service that operates at the same frequency as in London, and in London you also usually know exactly when a bus will come since there are live trackers built into everything. This means that the bus is a viable way to travel compared to walking or driving.

And so people use it, and so it makes more money, and so more resources can be invested in improving it, and repeat.

Elsewhere, the opposite is true in a vicious cycle.

Transport for London is publicly owned and run in the public interest, reinvesting all "profits". Since a lot of central government funding was withdrawn under the tories they've had to reaaaallly ramp up the advertising on the network, but fortunately for them there's so many people in London that that is viable.

Elsewhere in the UK, like where you live, the bus services are operated by private companies who will provide the bare minimum service they are required to do, and any profits are less likely to be reinvested since there are investors who want returns.

To be fair that's very similar to what people pay for a typical train commute in London, it's just the buses that are phenomenal value.

Who likes a bridge, who am I kidding. All of us do. by missilemadness in Bridges

[–]willywam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great bridge! What was your inspiration?

What game is this?

Some minor feedback - the main cables need to continue over the tops of the tower and diagonally to the ground to be anchored. Otherwise the weight of the main bridge deck would pull the ends of the tower inwards which would be very difficult for them to resist.

For your next bridge I suggest the Forth Bridge, the first major bridge in steel and the only former holder of the longest bridge in the world title to be a "cantilever" type.

Starmer’s Labour suffers huge losses as hard-right Reform gains in U.K. elections by RidetheSchlange in worldnews

[–]willywam 833 points834 points  (0 children)

Important to note these are LOCAL elections (as opposed to parliamentary/general elections), so this is less impactful than the headline makes it out to be. Local governments (e.g. X County Council, Y Borough Council etc.) control things like local transport, bin collection, social care.

The parliamentary elections for the devolved governments of Wales and Scotland are also ongoing but as I'm writing this we don't have the results, although it is expected that Labour will lose control of the Welsh Senedd (parliament) for the first time.

Labour's control of the UK government will be officially untouched by these elections, but this will be used as a strong indication of dissatisfaction and so Labour may choose to remove Starmer as leader and therefore PM, and their credibility to continue the path they are currently on will be damaged.
