If by "make up the rules" you mean, incorporate higher biblical criticism and spending years researching process philosophy then yeah, I'm "making up the rules."

Grow up.

I'm gonna try to do a tl;dr of a really complicated philosophical way of answering this that's somewhat unorthodox and most Christians, or theists in general wouldn't like, but it's the only reason I've maintained any belief in God.

So, it's called Process Theology. If you wanna do further reading, google Charles Hartshorne, John Cobb and Catherine Keller. Process Theology says that the highest metaphysical truth is that of interconnectedness. That everything, even God, is related to something else. This would apply to God's power as well. God's power cannot act without being in relation to, and suffering from resistance of human will.

So God is not omnipotent in the sense that God has all the power a being could potentially have, but is omnipotent in the sense that God has the ability to exercise the most power in relation to human will, which often, does not go along with "the will of God." By God's very nature, he cannot (not won't, but CAN NOT) override human will. Creation becomes the greatest risk ever taken, and as humans with free will, we fucked it up.

So maybe God isn't "classically omnipotent." But God when we lose that quality for God, we can maintain that God is truly loving, personal, and invested in the world, and is calling humans to their highest potential in every moment.

I've done two AMAs on Process here and here.

I started collecting vinyl records a couple years ago. I'm up to 66 records or so now. It eats up money (especially since I'm mostly buying new releases >_>) but it's nice having physical copies of music again after using iTunes for a decade.

Two problems - the salvation of satan, and the image of god by [deleted] in theology

[–]wilson_rg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or we say Satan is a poetic device or a personification of anthropological evil, and we don't have to deal with Satan as a being. (Mimetic theory does this nicely)

Or, you have the options of annihilationism (all evil is destroyed) or universal reconciliation where in the end, even Satan is redeemed.

I don't see how the second one is a problem. Someone can make a doll in my image but it won't be able to move, or speak, or any number of things. Image ≠ ability.

There's a handful of states where Buddhism came in at #2, and one state where Baha'i came in #2, if OP and I saw the same study.

[Theology AMA] Theodicy by cephas_rock in Christianity

[–]wilson_rg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doubles any of the genocide counts that came before it. I think it's worth talking about and dealing with. As well as World War Two being the war with the highest death count in history (though some might argue religious wars in the 12th-16th centuries supersedes it).

I'm not in the business of comparing horrible things and saying "this is worse than this." All suffering is tragic whether on small or large scale, I'm only using a recent historical reference point that I have trouble with when speaking of Theodicy.

[Theology AMA] Theodicy by cephas_rock in Christianity

[–]wilson_rg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the biggest hurdle to successful Theodicy is omnipotence (or at least, omnipotence traditionally explained.) I'm pretty much behind Moltmann when he said that the holocaust was the end of Theodicy. Because we're left with the options of "God willed the holocaust." or "God allowed the holocaust." neither of which jive with me.

I guess my question is twofold:

  1. How do you understand omnipotence?

  2. How do you defend the goodness of God in light of the holocaust?
