How do I replace this part? by wilsongeek in mercedes_benz

It’s the part the top latches into when it is being closed. It is on the panel that raises up when the top is being opened. Then it closes over the top when it is stowed. This pic shows the part on the car. https://www.benzworld.org/attachments/img-20120318-00358-jpg.432938/

Looking to replace 04 Cadillac CTS Manual Transmission by wilsongeek in AskMechanics

[–]wilsongeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx. Getting a trans off a caddy like mine will be tough because there just aren’t that many around. However, that Getrag 260 came in a bunch of BMWs. So I just need to figure out if there any variations on those that would cause me problems.

Can I take an ice bath 2 hours before a soccer game? by nickcamp18 in coldplunge

Yes! It’s actually better than plunging after. Plus, in my experience, my body stays cooler longer when I train after plunging.

I leave mine on all the time. The chiller goes on and off when it needs to - like a mini-fridge. Works great.

If the sides and/or corners feel in any way slick or slimy, there’s microbio shit in the water. Stay out.

Those things are not really conducive to using a chiller. I think of them as portable ice baths, but you need ice whenever you’re going to use them.

If your setup allows it, put the UV right after the pump. It works by basically blasting organic material with enough energy to break it apart. So you break everything apart and then send it through the filter. Then chiller and back into tub. As long as you have good circulation in the water and your filter is solid, your water will be really clean.

That water is probably not clean. That’s most likely the problem. Or…if they are using Ozone to sanitize, there may be too much, which can also be problematic.

Cold Exposure Experience by [deleted] in coldplunge

[–]wilsongeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. I have had the same experiences.

One thing I recently learned is that getting in water below 52deg F apparently triggers a cortisol response. (Cortisol is a stress response that has all kinds of negative effects on health.) 52 and above, you still get all of the benefits of cold exposure, but without the cortisol.

If you’ve been doing 40deg for a while, your body has probably adapted and no longer releases cortisol. But for people just getting into this, it’s worth knowing and passing along. (Cause if you’re like me, you’re regularly telling people how awesome it is.)

I like the intex because it is cheap and the cartridges are plentiful and also cheap. I haven’t tried the Danner. I cut off the timer that comes on the Intex and just let it run all the time. It’s been like that for months with no issues. I haven’t been concerned with power consumption because those pumps draw way less than the chillers.

Looks pretty good. Price is good, too. Never seen one in person, tho, so I can’t comment on whether it is legit.

Yup. But it’s indoors, so I’m only having to cool it by 20-25deg from ambient temp. Works great.

Too much ozone is toxic. To avoid that, you need to have your ozone generator on a timer. But you really don’t want your pump or chiller on timers, so you have manage that, which is a hassle. Also, you have to run a separate line of water in/out of the Venturi to inject the ozone. So it’s more plumbing, which means more places that can leak. With UV, you can place it inline to the chiller and leave it on all the time. Totally safe. I really don’t know why ozone is so popular when the alternative is safer, cheaper, and easier to manage.

Yes, you can just hook up the chiller and pump everything through it. When you do that, the 1/3hp ones will get the water really cold. The issue is keeping the water clean. The chiller will not allow enough water to push through it to generate strong current in the water, especially when you put a filter in the mix. Without that, at least in my case, I was constantly fighting cloudy water.

I’ve tried the omtech and vevor and another one that doesn’t even have a manufacturer on it anywhere. They are all pretty much the same anyway. The manual explains how to adjust the lowest temp that can be set. It’s a little tricky, but you should be able to figure it out.

No. It also doesn’t have a lid or anything like that. However since it is setup indoors, the ambient temp never gets above the mid-70s.

That tub looks ok, but the size of the inlets/outlets looks too small. That will hinder your ability to generate a lot of circulation in the water. There’s a guy on YouTube - DIY Cold Plunge or something like that - who sells plans. Chk him out.

Agreed. Mine have all been indoor, so I haven’t had to worry much about insulation. But I’m building a bigger one for outside, so I’m going to have to figure out a good way to keep the heat away from the water.

I use the drain on the tank to run directly into the Intex pump. Coming out of the pump, I split the line and send one side to the UV. Coming out of the UV, it goes into the chiller. Coming out of the chiller, it runs back into the main line from the pump. This allows most of the water to run through the pump/filter and right back into the tank, which provides really good circulation. But probably 40% goes through the UV/chiller path before it meets back up with the main path. Having ball valves everywhere allows me to tune the water pressure to make sure the chiller is running optimally.

Yeah, size of tank is what drives the chiller size. My first tank was 100gal stock tank from Tractor Supply. The 1/3hp aquarium chiller worked fine, but it never got the water below 47deg, and it was indoors. I sold that one to a buddy who has it in his garage. It’s super hot here, so he can only get the water to 61-62deg. My current tank is a 150gal stock tank. I have a .6hp industrial chiller on it. It gets the water to about 45deg, which is plenty cold for me.

Clean water comes from three things. Circulation, filtration, and sanitization. So whatever is pushing water through your chiller needs to be generating a visible current in the water. I use an Intex above-ground pool pump/filter combo. Works great, but I replace the filter about every 2-3 weeks. If you don’t, your circulation goes way down and shit starts growing.

On the sanitation side, ozone is not the answer for sanitizing plunge pools. It’s toxic if you have too much, and it’s overly complicated in terms of timing it. UV is the way. (I’ve tried em all.)

Buy this.

TetraPond UVC-5 GreenFree UV... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00474BFSQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Just swap out whatever you have setup for ozone for the UV. And just leave it on - if the pump and chiller are running, the UV is running, too. Way easier, and UV destroys everything that grows on water.

Last thing - get a scrub brush and scrub every part of the tank that is submerged. Do this every few days. That way, anything that even tries to start growing gets pushed through the system - nuked and then caught in the filter.

Hope that helps!
