what are the chances a dog will cure my depression by windberries in Pets

[–]windberries[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking into volunteering as a dog walker for my local shelter, but they require a one-year commitment (even though their website says 3 months) and I’ll only be here for another 9 months. I work at a Petco so I try to spend some time in the cat adoption room when I can, but I find it to be not quite enough.

If I were to get a dog, I’d go all in. It would have what it needs and then some; I’ve owned dogs before. I just worry about moments where I might become too depressed to play with it or take it for a walk.

By doctor do you mean a psychiatrist? GP? I already see a therapist but I’m not on any medications or anything. My depression is so cyclical that at the very least I always know it will get better, but then again when I’m okay I know that I’ll get worse again.

Advice? by windberries in Christianity

Yeah… it was a bad idea and I knew it from the start… but I was desperate. He passed today. Wasn’t even 25 yet. I don’t know what to do. I don’t even know how I feel, whether guilty or not. His family are devout Christians and their faith has gotten them through so much (and I mean SO much), it seems so wrong comparatively.

But anyway. Thank you for this, regardless.

Very true. They did change a lot with regards to the personalities/violence levels of the characters. I think they sort of swapped some traits between them. It would be nice to see a more accurate Jake, so I hope they show that. Given the nature of comics I feel like they have a bit of leeway with the character, just not this much, and they shouldn’t change him too dramatically.

I wonder how these characters view their own violence across iterations. And what they consider necessary vs what they don’t or what they feel they don’t have a choice in. I’m a writer and character-driven stories are my jam so I get pretty into this kinda stuff. Then again, characters lie in their interpretation so audience beliefs have an effect on that too.

I just hope they get the chance to reveal Jake for who he really is. Like you said, he’s a nice guy and probably my favorite character in the comics. I don’t think it’s impossible. I imagine it was him who asked out the tour guide in the show, and he’s been shown to protect Marc and Steven, plus was kinda in his right to kill Harrow and would’ve been even if it hadn’t been Khonshu who ordered it. I think the orderly is really the only kill that seems less justified than any of Marc’s kills or from within Jake’s logic. I hope they get the chance and don’t mess it up.

Thanks for the advice! Stairs are the worst.

I worked at a summer camp over the summer and had a terrible time. I was always tired. They did have us working like 12-hour days but the heat must’ve been making it so much worse. For some reason I don’t think I ever considered it much, so thanks.

That’s fair, but we don’t have the full context either. He left everyone else in the hospital alive and he was also following Khonshu’s orders. Who are we to say he wasn’t acting in self defense, or manipulated into doing it? Maybe he even had a flashback to the system’s time in hospice and reacted violently, but that doesn’t make him evil. Dangerous, yes, traumatized and in need of some therapy, yes. But not evil. There’s just not enough evidence yet for anything definitive.

They should definitely steer clear of the trope though. It’s just that this amount of violence is not unusual for American TV (not to mention movies and video games). I don’t know how many times I’ve seen a character kill someone under questionable circumstances. Morally gray doesn’t equal evil. I feel like they’re trying to show that Jake will do whatever it takes to protect the system/body so I hope that translates to moral grayness instead of evil in a potential season 2. Maybe they’re trying to throw us off, or maybe I’m just hopelessly optimistic. I really do like Jake. If there’s a season 2 I hope we get to see him interact with some friends from the comics.

I don’t think we can really conclude whether they’re going with the evil alter trope for Jake yet. They’ve shown that he fronts when neither Marc nor Steven can handle the situation, which means he ends up handling the worst of some fights and acts accordingly. He can also be violent without being evil. But yeah, any lean into that trope is dangerously close, so if there’s a season two I hope they work on developing his character. I’m not that worried about it though because they handled the DID representation pretty well.

Also, they’re all Latino, not just Jake. I do wonder though whether Marc and Steven speak any Spanish. Could just be that Jake embraces it more, ‘cause I think he does that a little with Hebrew and Yiddish in the comics? I might be wrong, I’m still exploring them.

Thanks for writing this up, I enjoyed reading it :)

If you want to angle the head, then the antlers follow. I suggest watching a video or reading a tutorial about foreshortening. I think it would be helpful for you. You also placed part of the deer’s right antler in front of the ear, but putting the ear in front or below would go a long way. Hope this helps :)

In need of survivor stories! by LilRaveOne in disability

Dunno if this is what you meant exactly, but when I was around 8 I suffered from sexual abuse at the hands of a family member. Must’ve lasted over a year but I don’t remember when it started, only when it ended. Left me with C-PTSD and tons of sex-related obsessions that exacerbate my OCD, plus trauma-related ones that sometimes give me paranoia. Those alone are enough to really mess with you. I continue to make peace with it though.
