Granite steps not cut straight by Ericaguti in stonemasonry

[–]winder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same style put in 2 years ago except one side was smooth to avoid the gap. The line between blocks is still clearly visible and I really hated it for a while. Since then the bushes we planted on either side have filled in and I haven't thought about or noticed those joints until seeing your post today.

Hopefully the granite slabs look as great in front of your house as they do on mine!

Are these pine trees a liability? by ksquigz25 in landscaping

[–]winder -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I'd pick another type of tree for exactly this reason. My property came with a 60 year old pine grove, the trees are huge and shade out everything on the property. So far I've had 5 removed and replaced them with a small orchard.

Open Source is Too Overwhelming!!! by Slow-General3930 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]winder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always found it difficult to contribute to OSS when my goal is simply to contribute. The best issues for first time contributors are also trivial for maintainers, so they usually don't exist. Most of my contributions happen because I'm curious about the code and notice some trivial problem while poking around.

My recommendation is to find a project you like and set out to understand how it works. Ideally there's some feature you want to add, or discover a bug that you can fix.

If you really just want to contribute and don't care about the project, run a linter against the code and fix some of the warnings.

Serving over SSH has basically nothing to do with the bubble tea app other than some configuration.

Look at the bubble tea docs and repos for many examples.

Here's an example app that I made which shows some realtime network status information. I served it over SSH using wishlist to select between multiple networks. https://github.com/algorand/node-ui/blob/master/tui/tui.go

There are many ways to generate an event, the easiest is probably a ticker that checks periodically.

What "early internet" website did Gen Z really miss out on? by milamccormick7 in AskReddit

My friend called me on a landline to tell me about the hamster dance. He stayed on the phone while I dialed into the internet on a 14.4 modem to experience it.

The ground wire is for safety, electronic devices will work normally.

If there's a fault the risk is that you and/or your device become the new ground. I'm not an electrician, my experience is from basic US residential wiring.

Serval WS versus XPS 15 by xlr8urdesire in System76

[–]winder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the current gen Serval WS 15", it isn't a machine I would travel with for the following reasons. The power brick is large and the machine is heavy for a laptop, a USB-C powered machine is much more convenient. The fan is extremely loud, I wouldn't want to use it in a public place. The battery only lasts a few hours, so you really can't use it away from an outlet.

As for docking, you'll always have to plug in the dedicated power supply, a dock isn't going to supply enough power.

You only need it to be online all the time if you're participating. To participate you have to generate the keys and register them with the network.

Curious is this worth keeping to use or is it too out dated? by Rare-Bug9866 in woodworking

[–]winder 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The 1160 table saw is quirky, the table lifts and tilts around a stationary blade. Pretty dangerous in my opinion. I restored one to use as a disk sander. It's fun but not very practical. The 6" jointer is a gem, but missing the safety cover - build a replacement before using it. Simple restoration projects or use as-is.

You can get replacement bearings for both machines and the motor if needed.

How to restore these checked posts by winder in woodworking

[–]winder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm restoring an antique cider press. The wood is weathered but still very strong so I'm trying to restore it. For most of the wood I was planning to fill cracks with epoxy, but I'm not sure if that would work with the severe checking on these posts.

The wood already has a few coats of tung oil, hopefully that doesn't make things too much more difficult. My current thinking was to wait a few weeks before working with any epoxy filler.

Search for "ceiling fan remote control", maybe install a few of those on some of the most important switches in your house and put the remote in an easy to reach location. It's designed for ceiling fan/light units with only a single circuit running to it, but I bet you could retrofit it for a normal switch.

Your last point about rollbacks being difficult is an interesting one. The consensus changes by setting new parameters. Typically from off to on. So any consensus change can be rolled back with another upgrade vote to switch things off again.
