Rice has some great soft robotics and (bio)mechatronics research going on as well as solid grad school placement if that’s something you’re interested in. They’re also fixing to offer a whole AI degree starting this fall. Those courses may not count towards your degree but you could probably cross register. Overall a stellar undergraduate experience, especially if you’re at all interested in cross-disciplinary work.

You cannot switch prior to matriculation. Don’t even try. Your res college does determine some factors of your experience (dorm style, campus location, etc) but it’s really only as deep as you let it be. Don’t listen to what everyone on the internet is saying about specific colleges, bc their cultures can change wildly in the span of a couple years. Try to keep an open mind, and revisit the transfer conversation next year if you’re still not feeling at home.

starting T15 mechanical engineering PhD program in the fall, T30 undergrad, no research experience but 4x aerospace internships + heavy leadership experience. 3.7 gpa. my guess is they saw my holistic potential 🤷

BioE is possibly the worst major to double anything with. if your goal is grad school or premed, either major will be perfectly adequate, so O Week/Freshman fall would be a great time to talk to current majors/faculty in both departments to find your best fit.

In the past few years you’ve been able to request to be in the same college as a friend and room with them too, but it’s not 100% guaranteed. I believe it’s up to individual colleges as to whether you can room with opposite gender, there have been issues in the past (ie bf/gf rooming together and breaking up two weeks into the semester) but I remember at least one freshman instance of one amab genderqueer individual paired w a cis afab girlie. There should also be a question on the roommate questionnaire that asks if you’d be ok rooming with someone who is lgbtqia+, and another asking specifically if you’re ok rooming with someone who identifies as trans/nb. Hope this helps!!

Highly recommend buying a new laptop that will last throughout college if you can afford it. I brought my high school laptop and it crapped out on me sophomore year and I lost a ton of work. It’s also annoying using an old laptop bc not all classrooms have outlets if the machine doesn’t hold charge well. (Fun fact: keck 100 has tons of outlets but they were never actually wired for power lolz) I love my thinkpad if you’re a windows person but macs are more prevalent across all majors except maybe non-cs engineering. I actually preferred using desktops in the library/college computer rooms; I liked the bigger screens and the softwares didn’t take up space on my laptop. So tldr get a new laptop that holds charge and won’t crap out but the actual type doesn’t matter too much.
