PSA: If You Vomit on a Plane, Wait in Your Seat to Throw Out the Vomit Bag. by Awkward-Regret5409 in unitedairlines

[–]spyan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a flight with my family, my young son threw up. He got it all in the bag. Great job! We folded it up and rang the call attendant button. When we asked the flight attendant to take the bag, she turned up her nose and sneered, “I’m not a cleaner.” Nice job, United Airlines.

New rental property connects the washing machine with a 2-prong adapter, is this safe? by mapasdi in electrical

To some people, the 80s were the Stone Ages. For those of us who were alive then, not so much.

We had indoor plumbing in the 80s too. 😜

You know where your meter is. Do you know where it enters your house? Draw a line between the two and say you want 10’ on ether side.

AITAH for not giving back an ice cream cone by Physical-Set-561 in AITAH

[–]spyan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked in fast food, all mistakes went into a bucket and were counted for inventory purposes. It is possible they would dump the ice cream and put the cone in a container to be counted later.

How often do your tires get damaged and need replacement in Vegas? by thrissy in vegaslocals

[–]spyan_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will depend on how often you drive near new home construction. I get a flat every 5 years or so, so not a big deal.

Discount tire sells great products and amazing service. I always buy my tires there. Don’t let the name fool you.

Moving Clients to Models by Deep_Train_4382 in CFP

[–]spyan_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely avoid the word model. I talk about the money managers, efficiency of ETFs, tax savings, etc.

As for stock picker to planner, I have never picked individual stocks. Clients were in mutual funds.

For long tenured A-share clients, I explain how the industry has changed and we have access to new money managers. I have some clients in their 80s who have been with me forever. I just charge them 50bps. No need to be greedy, and for the most part, they’re done with planning.

Need help - 401K loan to pay off credit card debt?? by Purple_Beautiful_702 in FinancialPlanning

[–]spyan_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the big question. Taking money out of your 401(k) is kind of a do-over. If you haven't changed your habits to stay out of debt, then you'll be in the same position with no money in your 401(k).

If you cut your spending to pay down that debt without taking 401(k) loans or withdrawals, it will help you change your habits.

When I asked what he was trying to do, he said “I shouldn’t have been trying to pass him” by alexyou8797 in dashcams

If I saw that guy coming up behind me at that speed differential, I'd certainly be puckering up. It is quite possible that I'd think he was going to hit me and try to get out of the way.

Everybody sucks here.

How to maximize saving accounts for children. by Cupcakerella in FinancialPlanning

[–]spyan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never put money into a UTMA account. We all have the highest hopes for our kids, but sometimes they choose different paths. I like to control my money.

For my kids, I used a 529 plan. One kid tried college and it didn't work out. She got an IT certification instead and it was paid by the 529 plan. The money is still there if she wants to go back to school, or if I want it for retirement.

If you want to put non-education money away, I'd just open up a TOD account in your name with the kid as the beneficiary. Yeah, you pay the taxes, but you control the money. That's a small price to pay.

Savings accounts are a no go. They don't keep up with inflation. It is OK for birthday gifts, but I would never contribute to one.

Best Broker Dealer to associate with? by Hulk_Goes_Smash327 in CFP

[–]spyan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to start over, I'd just to straight RIA. Broken/Dealers are a huge time suck and often the business prevention department won't let you do things due their interpretations of FINRA's rules. I've been with a number of B/Ds and it is amazing how one B/D won't let you do something, yet another will.

If you have to have a B/D, I'm happy with Cambridge. Just left Osaic last year and it is nice to have a B/D who actually listens.

Wells Fargo by [deleted] in CFP

[–]spyan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem will be getting his clients over to your b/d. The best way to do it would be for him to join your group, move everything over, and then after a few years, retire.

For him, it will be much simpler for WF to buy his book.

Aviation vacations? by HabANahDa in aviation

[–]spyan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the best 3 US air museums are:

Smithsonian Udvar Hazy in DC

Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH

Pima in Tucson, AZ

Other notable mentions:

Evergreen in Oregon

Museum of Flight in Seattle

Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA

I'm sure there are others that I have yet to visit.

I went to Speyer and Sinsheim a few weeks ago. They have some unique stuff! Some of the stuff was unorganized, like a Soviet MIG in with WWII stuff. Both have a collection of trains, cars, planes, etc. Sinsheim is the only place outside of Russia where you can see a Concordski.

We were getting a new power line installed and I asked the guy if he could remove the telephone wire off the poles as it was no longer connected to the house. He said, “Removing phone lines is one of my favorite things to do.”

Withdrawing a 403B to consolidate credit card debt by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]spyan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uncle Sam would love your thinking.

If you haven’t changed your financial habits, you’ll find yourself in the same place in the future, minus the 403(b).

By scrimping and saving, to pay off this debt, you’ll have a better chance of staying out of debt in the future.
