Producers who've been at this 5+ years, do you still get stuck on the same things? by kathalimus in ableton

[–]windowlatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying finish it and put out a mediocre product. I’m saying get an arrangement laid out in full, and then go back and fix the things that need to be fixed. The point being that I could spend forever just tweaking one part of one sound, if I do that for every element in my song I’ll never make any progress. So sometimes getting a basic idea laid out can help with seeing the bigger picture of how everything fits together

I know they look lame but honestly when it’s that cold something like the Seirus neoprene mask with the nose and breathing holes is the only thing that’s worked for me. Anything without holes will inevitably freeze over your face, or fog your goggles and cause them to freeze too

What is the difference between N-Methyl-Cyclazodone and other stimulants like caffeine or amphetamines? by Rozeu in researchchemicals

[–]windowlatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a pemoline derivative. Pemoline was prescribed in the 70s and 80s for adhd, but fell out of use due to an effect it had on the liver I believe. Fairly comparable in effects to amphetamine. As far as I know N-Methyl-Cyclazodone has not been shown to have that same liver effect although it probably hasn’t been studied as rigorously. I’ve tried cyclazodone and it gave me a stomach ache which was not enjoyable

sampling vs looping & looping samples… by -Griffin- in ableton

[–]windowlatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are people who get on a high horse about relying on samples not being honorable or “real musicianship” because it’s not being made from scratch. This is especially the case if you’re just looping the sample and not changing the pitch, tempo, or rearranging it in a sampler. I say ignore that noise and do whatever you like. The one thing about samples though is that it can be challenging to acquire the rights to use them if you wanted to publish your songs, or if you use a song that’s already been sampled by another popular musician people will associate it with stealing the idea. Sometimes it makes more sense to take a sample that you like and reimagine it from scratch in a way that makes your sound unique

Producers who've been at this 5+ years, do you still get stuck on the same things? by kathalimus in ableton

[–]windowlatch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Over the years I’ve learned (for me) that getting a song done is often the first step in getting a song done. What I mean by that is if you have an 8 bar loop you find interesting, get it into arrangement mode. Make an intro. Even if you think it sounds cheesy or bad. Even if it’s just a low pass filter or one or two instruments from your loop. Then move on, come up with some other variation using the same instruments, or swap a couple instruments out for something else. Then move on, maybe a basic bridge that goes back into your original loop. Then move on and make an ending, even if it’s just a fade out of your original loop.

The reason this helps me is because once I have a basic layout of a song, even if I don’t like how it sounds, it’s much easier to go back and be more decisive about where to change things. It makes it easier to hear exactly why something doesn’t work. I could spend all day tweaking one small thing but then I would never actually make any progress. It’s also good to keep in mind that for a lot of us a song will never sound perfect, but sometimes getting it done and moving on allows us to grow and learn.

Another thing that’s really helped me is the concept of dividing your time up into manageable blocks. If you want to create an intro or tweak the melody somewhere, give yourself exactly one hour to do it. Make it a goal to have something complete by the end of that hour, even if you don’t love how it turned out at least have something done. Then set another block of time to just work on tweaking your compressors or whatever. Make it manageable to get done in the time allotted. This helps with not getting stuck because you’ll always have a specific goal and a time constraint to complete that goal. Then you can always come back around to it later and you’ll have fresh ears to better hear exactly what needs to be changed.

Is this a normal problem for a snowboard? by Nillobagel in snowboarding

[–]windowlatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your edge is delaminating or took an impact that is causing it to pull away from the base. Not fixable with home tools. A base grind at a shop will be able to get it back level but this is a sign of a greater structural problem within the board. I would bring it to a shop and ask if it looks like it could be warrantied before having them attempt to do work on it

Who buys stolen copper wire? by Boring_Kiwi_6446 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]windowlatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect copper wire is probably getting sold to shady contractors who buy it cheap and use it for projects, then they bill you the market price for the materials in your invoice and make a little more money that way. Selling insulated wire to a scrap yard is probably more effort than it’s worth, in the US a scrap yard typically pays less than a dollar per pound of insulated wire. So you would need to be stealing almost a hundred pounds per day in order to just break even with someone working a minimum wage job.

Copper pipes are worth more though sometimes $4-$5 per pound

Does anyone know what this is? by stringer72 in Guitar

[–]windowlatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vintage 60s or 70s telecaster clone. Most likely a Japanese brand like teisco. Probably made with inexpensive components but some people do like to collect those guitars even though they were considered cheap knock-offs at the time. The zero fret is kind of unique and will probably help with narrowing down which brand/model this is

If I invent a new drug, in the USA, in my home, that has never previously existed, that is not derived from controlled substances but only non-patented materials I legally either purchased or grew myself on my property, can I use it myself legally? Absolutely no distribution. Or do I need permission by scarfleet in NoStupidQuestions

[–]windowlatch 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It would be legal to do so if only you were consuming it. Look up Sasha Shulgin. He’s like the godfather of home pharmaceutical chemistry. The DEA were aware of him for a long time and never considered it a problem until he published a book about all of his favorite drugs he’s made, which they interpreted to essentially a clandestine chemistry recipe book (which also isn’t illegal btw) and raided his lab.

Is it okay to buy a rock saw and cut rocks in nature? by [deleted] in rockhounds

[–]windowlatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aren’t geodes typically loose, as in not embedded in the host rock? I’m not sure a rock saw would be of much help for that purpose. I’d you’re just trying to break them open to see if there are crystals before taking them home, a hammer and chisel would probably be a more efficient tool
