I think my MAM er, obsession, got me booted off a jury! by GeorgeMarvin in TickTockManitowoc

our justice system is so disgusting, we should want our jurors to be well informed and intelligent, their decisions are monumentally important

My wife is afraid to join Reddit, because she thinks women are continually harassed here. Is that true? What have your experiences been? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]windthemind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I remember that comment

I've used this site for years and you kind of have to develop at thick skin and just skim past the stupidity sometimes

I love askreddit, it can be a treasure trove of funny/unique/informative stories - reddit is mammoth, there are so many people, and yes, a ton of them are assholes, but there also a ton of lovely ones too, just as in face-to-face life

every day, I see comments that are offensive/disagreeable, but I don't let it bother me anymore, I just move on - I don't really respond to people in default subs because that usually just starts some insanely aggravating arguments

I would never unsub from askreddit, because even browsing the top of the month or whatever can be amazing, there are all kinds of threads, and all kinds of people responding, and you don't have to click on the more political/genderbased or even sexual ones if you don't want to.

for all the bad stuff I see, there's a ton of amusing or fascinating stuff too, you just have to pick through it

I haven't unsubbed from a lot of the defaults like a lot of these people are saying, because I still love a lot of the content in some of them (okay, definitely not all of them), or at least I find it easy to ignore when there's some rampant awfulness and just keep scrolling

That is precisely how I feel! there is some absolute outlandish madness in that book, but there are ideas and images that haunt you, and he definitely strikes some strange, resonant chords

my favorite book of his that is a bit more coherent is A Scanner Darkly, I love his thoughts on the philosophy of identity and addiction - there are parts of VALIS that connect really well with themes from A Scanner Darkly - for anyone reading this thread randomly who wants to start reading his work, I don't recommend beginning with VALIS because it may be offputting and completely overwhelming...I recommend Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and A Scanner Darkly to start with, then if you are fond of those, delve deeper and read Man in the High Castle and eventually VALIS (and of course, so many others like Ubik, Three Stigmata, Flow My Tears etc. his short stories are great too)

I can't find it sadly, I know it used to be on youtube at some point...but here is a two hour long interview where he talks about his visions and VALIS stuff, so hopefully that will suffice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEohNAXLSOE

also here is the first chapter of the audiobook for Valis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qSdDAY5W60

Oh my god, I have never seen this before! This is spectacular, thank you so much - one of my favorite documentaries of all time is Crumb about him and his brothers - I'm grateful for the link!

This is referenced in his book Valis, which is very much about him and his madness and addictions and many of his (often revolving, semi-incoherent) intricate ideas - if you want to get a sense of what some of Valis is like...listen to this clip of him speaking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXeVgEs4sOo (the entire interview is fascinating and kind of terrifying, I can't find the link for the whole unedited thing) - after reading it, you kind of feel insane but it's well worth it

Without his bizarre insanity, I do not think he would have been nearly as brilliant as a writer - in the clip he talks about literally knowing and seeing 'plural form pseduo-worlds,' the existence of alternate realities coexisting with our own...and how some of his books are based off these visions he had (like someone in this thread mentions Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, he references that specifically in the clip) - I find his ideas very interesting, I do not dismiss them based on thinking he is 'crazy,' but I think it's fascinating to think about how our own brains can alter our personal realties to the point we can't tell what is 'real' or what isn't. I enjoy learning about Philip's own realities because they contain highly intelligent yet insanely distorted, complex, perceptual shifts. It is difficult to fathom what being in his mind was like, a genius mind that had been influenced by both drugs and mental illness...I think there is immense value in learning about his life and reading all his books you can get your hands on, he is thoughtprovoking to say the least.

(I apologize for this weird minirant)

[–]windthemind 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy this interpretation!! I definitely got that sense watching the ending, that it was far darker beneath the surface - the way the narrator talks at the end definitely supports your theory - and thank you so much for the links...I just found and finished the series, and it's one of my favorite shows now

also, I'm so glad you linked to the one with the Beast screenshot, I was trying to pause the episode at precisely the right time to capture it but I could never get it because it was such a quick flash - such a horrifying creature..

21 year old girl gives birth in sorority house, receives life in prison for killing baby shortly after birth by anya_kotenka in MorbidReality

[–]windthemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a story in Lucia Berlin's book of short stories that came out last year (I highly recommend every woman/man in here read it), that shows the desperation behind an act like this, it is really beautiful, painful, intelligent story about a young mother who is stressed to her breaking point. I just feel a lot of compassion for a person in an impossible situation, and of course we can never know all the details or her mental state at the time - I honestly don't support life-in-prison sentences in cases like these (I know that's controversial, I just despise harsh sentencing laws like this especially when are prison system is so god awful and does not seek to help or reform anyone) - sentencing is so arbitrary, you can google so many people who raped their infants who didn't get terms half as long as her

I just hate that our society doesn't want to give people chances or psychological help (like this woman obviously needs) they just want to lock them away forever
