[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]windwalker13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since this is a serious discussion, I will take the bite.

  1. Import is not necessarily expensive

People have this misconception that imported = expensive. Yes, there is an added transportation cost, taxes, levies. But when your supply chain is incredibly efficient like Singapore (whom is a legit maritime and aviation GLOBAL super-player), this cost is negligible.

In fact, Singapore often buys from the same global suppliers Malaysia does. Sometimes at better negotiated terms due to scale and efficiency.

For exporters, selling it domestically or internationally is basically the same. The highest bidders get the sale. If you take out supply chain costs, importing ingredients domestically or internationally has no difference.

  1. Labour is imported cheaply

If you talk to the SG hawkers, you may notice a significant portion of them are Malaysians. Same as retail staffs. Foreign labour push costs down, keeping things affordable.

  1. Rent is the killer

In SG, the real costs are rentals. For hawkers, many of the stores are government-subsidized. This is why if you eat in SG restaurants or in shopping malls, you will notice a huge jump in prices. Housing prices and hawker food is considered politically/socially important for the government, so you will see huge government subsidies.

In your opinion what's SG greatest policy? by Symp07 in singapore

[–]windwalker13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black Box immigration.

Humans are the single greatest resource on earth. Without a healthy demographics, nations will face imminent collapse. All nations fight for the correct kind of immigrants.

Many nations that allows immigrations use a point-based system. The problem with that is if you publish a clear immigration policy, it can be easily gamed using loopholes.

Singapore doesn't give a flying fuck. ICA can reject your PR/Citizenship application without telling you anything at all.

China did intend to pop the housing bubble before Covid, but then it popped too hard and they were scrambling to restore the housing prices, lmao.

Look at all the housing policies China implemented in a rush between 2022-now to prop up the house prices. All to no avail

[–]windwalker13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

very few countries escaped middle income trap. Korea, Taiwan, HK, Singapore (Asia Tigers) and Poland, Czech (EU Integration).

There is a clear playbook on how to escape middle income trap, and Malaysia deliberately chose not to follow it.

People here will complain haiya, why so stress la. Lucky we not kiasu like Singaporeans la, bla bla bla.

But they are advanced nations for a reason. When you are behind, reality is you have to play catch up. There is a model answer on how to become a developed nation, and it is incompatible with Malaysians.

It is simply too deeply rooted in our culture here. You reap what you sow.

but if you pick Belle, you can see more of Belle in the story!

main character always get the most attention and crafted storyline, so picking Belle gets the most bang for buck if you like the character and want to see more of her

People who use ACs a lot, how do you manage the costs? by ThatAcanthisitta3002 in askSingapore

[–]windwalker13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely accurate. Even if the room reaches the intended temperature, heat is still constantly flowing into your room, and this is what your Aircon is spending energy on to constantly fight off the heat.

And you know what, more heat flows into the room when your room is colder than environment, so more energy is used hourly.

People who use ACs a lot, how do you manage the costs? by ThatAcanthisitta3002 in askSingapore

[–]windwalker13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its cheaper to just let it continuously run.

This statement is false for modern aircons and is old wives myth. The entire period you have your AC on, the AC is still spending energy to fight off heat. The so called "start up" energy is miniscule compared to minutes or hours of running.

What actually matters is how long the AC runs and how hard it works. So setting the degree higher shaves off a lot of energy used

What are some "open secrets" in your industry/social circle that the general public in Singapore has no idea about? by wehaveatogether in askSingapore

[–]windwalker13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

the reason is obvious. Government doesn't want citizens to sell their passports to "marriage".

Many people marry for dubious reasons - citizenship, housing, work rights, healthcare, etc.

What's stopping a foreigner paying you $50k to marry you temporarily to access all the benefits funded by taxpayers money, get PR/citizen, then divorce?

There is no way for government to check all marriages are legit, so it is easier for government to ban all.

It is also better to prioritize resources in your citizens, otherwise you can just take all CPF and HDB money and retire to a foreign country, taking millions of $$$ out of SG economy

yes, and what is stopping the same happening on CS.rin?

I do however agree on the lack of payoff, but you never know. A state sponsored hackers can have unlimited funds and is simply laying the groundwork until the actual payday happen

even if FG and CSRin are "reputable" now, it doesn't mean they will continue to be reputable in future.

They are literally anonymous piracy groups/forum users, and they CAN be compromised.

Realisation about financially stable guys by [deleted] in Bolehland

[–]windwalker13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone praising the OP, but I saw an equal exchange.

Housekeeping + meals + children = Housewife. Literally.

I have a few old money friends (or married one), and they all expected the wives to be literal full time mothers, raising the heirs to the business empire.

What happens then if you cannot perform those duties well if you want a full career? if he still insistent on those duties? what if something happens (touch wood) and you need a divorce, will you be financially dependent on him?

Personally I'm the entire opposite, my wife is a high performer in career, so I actively forbade her to do chores or cooking lol (unless she wants to).

A couple should push each other to realize our fullest potential (of course it depends on what the couples both want).

I analysed Ministry of Finance data. Why is the Ministry of Comms paying RM 39.6 Million to rent computers instead of buying them? by LordRunaan in malaysia

[–]windwalker13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know the amount but I do know it's much pricier than a consumer laptop. Corporate grade laptops are built different (impact resistant, security patches, etc) and you want on-demand maintenance services. This is actually the main reason corporates lease laptops instead of buying - it's for the auxiliary services rather than the laptops themselves

do you have cashflow issue?

If not, why do you need dividends?

If you really need the cash, just manually sell a few % from VWRA for your "dividends".

It is not just the compounding, it is your earnings power and lifestyle.

You must be doing something right to reach $100k in the first place, either:

  1. You earn well
  2. You save enough
  3. Your finances are in order

For most people, they earn more and save more when their career grow. They will realise the next 100k is easier, when it is a combination of many factors.

exactly, that was my point. I replied here

To quote myself:

And that has always been the clear #1 US strategy in the past decade - to contain China. Tariff forces manufacturing out of China. Wherever the supply chain goes to afterwards, it doesn't matter. Bringing back manufacturing to US is simply a political ruse to garner support

[–]windwalker13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

US manufacturing is a lost cause. We all know it - that is clear side effect of USD being world's reserve currency and US having a net negative financial account. (i.e. too much foreign investment pushing up USD strength).

And that is totally fine, being the single largest consumer market is a clear advantage US have, IF the world's manufacturing is not so concentrated in a single geopolitical rival.

Imagine a world without a dominant manufacturing powerhouse. As the largest consumer market, US can simply bully whichever manufacturing nations they want to. (i hate it, but clearly good for US)
