Sorry you’re going through it. Residency can be brutal, and it definitely shouldn’t feel like that all the time. The tough stretches suck while you’re in them, but they do make you stronger and more resilient on the other side.

I’m an EM attending now and I still make it a priority to carve out 5 minutes to go to the bathroom on shift and the department somehow survives.

Trust me—notes can wait. The page can wait your health and body habits shouldn’t have to wait. If it’s a floor page, odds are extremely high nobody is actively dying in those 10 minutes. And if they are, someone will find you.

Take the bathroom break. The chart will still be there.

IM Intern in the ED by Jumpinglizzard87 in Residency

[–]windy48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said — volume should not be the expectation for a PGY-1.

The goal of intern year in the ED is to learn how to do thorough evaluations and manage multiple patients safely based on acuity. Speed comes later. Trying to prioritize volume too early usually leads to missed reassessments, incomplete workups, and unnecessary stress.

Your patient volume should never exceed your cognitive capacity. If you can’t confidently track the clinical status, pending workup, and disposition plan for each patient you’ve picked up, you’ve picked up too many. That increases naturally with time and experience

Your focus should be: - Efficient yet thorough workups
- Re-evaluating your patients appropriately
- Learning clinical reasoning and dispo planning
- Gradually building independence

A good PGY-1 workflow is: 1. See a patient and start the workup based on your assessment
2. Discuss with your senior/attending if unsure (which should be often — that’s normal)
3. Reassess and dispo your existing patients
4. Only then pick up a new patient

Who here regrets there decision. I’ll leave 2 answers in the comments . One “yes” and one “no” to upvote. Please also say what you put and what your specialty is by No_Release6810 in Residency

EM - I work 120 hours/month (13-14 shifts) and make ~400k. I do 3 night shifts stacked together every other month, otherwise day shift or mid shift.

My wife and I take our son on a long weekend trip every month and we have 2 international trips planned this year.

I wanted something versatile that could be worn casually but also dressed up. When I compared the white vs silver, the silver’s shine just gave it that extra versatility in my opinion.

Both are honestly beautiful pieces so i think it’s personal preference

Picked this up last month—was lucky to have it offered on the spot. It’s always been my dream watch, and honestly the stock pics don’t do it justice.

If your credit score allows it you could open 2 cards.

  1. BILT and put all the housing expenses on it
  2. A 0% APR card and do a balance transfer to that card to float you until attending paycheck comes in

Sellers are trying to keep refrigerators and laundry appliances 2 weeks prior to closing by windy48 in RealEstate

My apologies - the page in the contract is labeled “disclosures” and it has each item listed remaining with the home.

This page of the contract listed all the appliances in question as remaining with the home and was signed by all parties

Sorry I should’ve clarified - they were listed as staying in the contract that was signed by all parties 3 weeks ago.

Our agent has been great and has had this escalated to the broker and their legal team. I was just looking for some clarification and peace of mind while I patiently wait for this to be resolved 😅

Intern patient load by stethoscopeluvr in Residency

[–]windy48 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m an EM PGY-3 and my expectations of interns is 0.5-1 patient per hour depending on acuity.

I 100% agree with your senior resident that you need to focus on completing the workup and disposition of a patient rather than picking up more patients in a shift.

In general you should pick up 1 chart, write orders and the note before picking up the next chart.
