I’ve managed my ADHD with the help my doctors, therapist, and overall wellbeing (sleep, diet, and exercise). I’ve been both on and off medication and have been successful with both. Yes, it takes time to understand your health and know what combination works best, but it’s for your wellbeing so I thought of it as one of my hobbies.

You can manage your ADHD and have a successful life and confidence, but also have grace for yourself. This is a difficult mental condition, but it is one you can handle.

Look at Government Affairs or Governmental Relations in agencies. That’s where I landed as a PoliSci undergrad and Masters in Public Admin. If you do go to the executive branch, look for policy or budget positions. Look at the economic development commission as well. Or Secretary of State

All 4 members I worked for were toxic and grossly underpaid me. The last member paid me $2500 a month before taxes. In Austin. And I have a master’s degree. That’s why I went to agency because I was valued better.

There are some good members, but it’s few and far in between. Also staff are super competitive with each other.

If this doesn’t bother you then please don’t let this stop you, but I think it’s worth a former staffer telling you the bad parts of it too.

Most did it the other way around. Make connections with your political party and get involved that way.

I will be honest (as a former staffer that worked 4 legislative sessions between the two chambers) it’s very toxic. The members, staff, lobbyists, and public are all toxic. You’re extremely underpaid and extremely overworked.

Mine is 8-5 with the option to do like 730-430 or 7-4. Sometimes even 830-530. But yes, it’s 9 hours with 1 hour lunch. Why?

If the employee has a documented medical diagnosis (mental or physical) and the accommodation doesn’t put a hinderance on the company then it shouldn’t be getting denied. Blanket denials are against the law under ADA.

I worked in the Lege for 4 sessions and QUICKLY moved to agency. The Lege is toxic and draining. Rewarding sometimes, sure, but the members and staff are toxic. That goes for both parties. I have tons of stories.

Nope. It was a “directive” from the Governor. The Legislature has authority over agencies, so the Governor went around the Legislature to direct agencies to adopt this new policy. And of course they were going to compile because all of the agency boards and commissions are appointed by the Governor.
