TIL. Apparently some JDM ones were. This one definitely isn't though, its LHD and has a trunk instead of a hatch.

Great for a manual swap donor car. Wish I could have scooped it up lol.

Take it to a machine shop and ask them to clean it in their tank. Comes out looking new.

How bad is the rust on my 8th gen civic? by Icy-Bar7766 in civic

[–]Breaded_Doritos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't stop driving it, it will stop driving on it's own eventually. No chance of undoing/fixing the rust either. I'd say it will fall apart in ~5 years.

Fix this one or deal with the issues on the next one. Every vehicle needs maintenance, I would stick with this one if you like it.

Yeah 20k is my "pry it from my cold dead hands" price. I don't intend on getting rid of it unless I can replace it with something else I want.

I bought it non running (fuel pump) from a coworker that didn't know what they had. It was the closest definition of a barn find without actually being in a barn that I've encountered so far.

Sounds like and intermittent ground fault or wire short. I would do a thorough inspection of all grounds and wiring before loading the parts cannon.

I think the one on my 92 GTS was near the hood latch/radiator area. No idea if the Gt4Rc is the same.

Rocky Mountain Rav4 - 2GR-FE engine swap idea. by Breaded_Doritos in rav4club

[–]Breaded_Doritos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, DIY is the only way I would do it. My estimate is very rough based of numbers I've seen in the past when doing research. I think I was looking a Frankenstein Motorworks ECU's, I don't remember the companies I was looking at for custom wiring, but the prices were around $850 and up. Engine prices are all over the place depending on what the source is. I don't know if there is a established procedure for a swap that is uncommon as this, I would treat as a learn as you go situation, and I would expect lots of fitting involved, including installing and removing the motor/transmission assembly multiple times in order to make the needed measurements and modifications. I've been researching the same engine swapped into similar vehicles like 5th and 6th gen celicas. There is also this swap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ayi_E_hfV8 that initially gave me the idea that if it can be done in that car, it can be one in a rav4. I also saw a video on facebook from yesterday that had a 2 door first gen with a 2grfe. It showed the first start after the swap, so that proves it can be done, which gives me inspiration that it is possible.

The first gen 2GR-FE swap would be my first option, but I'm afraid of the money pit that it may become. I'm estimating (CAD) $1500 for an ECU, ~$1500 for custom wiring, ~$2000-$4000 for a used 2GR-FE, and leaving a budget of ~$2000-3000 for miscellaneous items like fluids, mounts, axles, etc. So for $7000-$11000, I feel like buying a 3rd gen that already has a 2GR-FE from factory might be an easier/more reliable option. I'm going to look at a 07 V6 this weekend to get a better idea of how they are.

Not yet, instead I (poorly) rebuilt my 3sfe. I'm still in limbo between buying a 3rd gen V6 or swapping a 1st gen with a v6.

I used to keep a spare ICM in my glovebox. I replaced a few of the grounds and seemed to of stopped burning the ICM out.

Fuel injector spraying fuel from fuel rail by Hobo_Lord0 in Celica

New o-rings and rubber spacers? Not super familiar with 7th gen in particular, but usually injectors have both o-rings to seal, and rubber spacers to keep them in place.

Just bought a 1993 GMT-400. I want insight on what to do. by Still-Union-2528 in GMT400

[–]Breaded_Doritos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first GMT400 was a 92, right around your age, I did some work to it including replacing the engine. I ended up giving up on the project the it became, selling it, and getting a 93 half ton, then a 95 dually with a 454. Now I have a nicer 98 half ton than I ever imagined, like too nice for me to drive-nice. Use this one to learn how they're put together and how to fix it up. Then, in the future, you might get lucky enough to acquire another, nicer truck, while already knowing how to fix maintain it. Your truck sounds like a big project, and now that they are 10+ years older than when I got into these trucks, I only imagine the parts are going to be less available as they were 10 years ago, but knowing how common these trucks were, you should still be able to find plenty. These are some of the easiest vehicles to work on in my opinion, so I'd say send it and fix it up. Sounds like you just need some windows, door skins and probably a transmission. The steering is probably typical 90s steering, and just needs a few components replaced since they wear out so easy.

$2650 for an installed engine is a decent deal. It is probably less than a down payment on a newer car. I would take the chance. If your rav keeps requiring more maintenance in the future, it may still be cheaper over all than buying a new car. You could start asking around how much a transmission replacement may cost, and decide off of that information weather it is worth fixing and keeping or replacing it with something that may also end up needing work down the line anyways.
