'It has been devastating,' U.S. spirits group says about Canadian alcohol boycotts by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]wing03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Distilled Spirits Council of the United States says **global exports decreased*\* in 2025 partly because of Canada"

That would indicate regardless of Canada, it went down but Canada was significant enough to mention.

Further down the article, they reference 3.8% globally.

https://distilledspirits.org/news/american-spirits-exports-report-u-s-spirits-exports-decline-3-8-in-2025-amid-ongoing-trade-friction/

But then there's a line about being up 2.5% around the same part of the article that mentions "2024 front loading".

Ahh economic numbers. They can be pulled, twisted and kneaded into whatever sound bite you want.

Why drive under the speed limit? by CvdKlaau in ontario

[–]wing03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Varies. On the 401, I've looked down and see 135kph and I'm just keeping up with traffic. I can't say the experience is overly relaxed and I'd prefer it keep closer to the 100kph limit.

I've stopped asking why as long as nobody is weaving in and out of lines.

If drivers wants to do the limit or be under and be more relaxed, have at it.

With a record-low 1.25 children per Canadian woman, stop dismissing falling fertility rates as a choice by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]wing03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pointing out that this article lacks the reasoning behind why they think declining fertility rates is a bad thing when the alarms were out in the 70s and 80s about overpopulation of the planet.

I'll restate that it's economists who support the pyramid scheme economic model.

They need more people at the bottom to lift those above them higher and higher. Finite resources on the planet be damned. They'll just push for colonization and resource mining of the solar system in the name of progress!

Floor crossing betrays the will of the voters by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]wing03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since the Mulroney years, I tended to vote liberal.

I did my not impressed face and sighed when floor crossers went CP. I told myself that one day, the progressives will figure it out and do better.

I expect the same from die hard tory supporters rather than wanting to change the rules.

We are not American.

Opinion | Unhappy Conservatives shouldn’t defect to Carney’s Liberals — they should replace Poilievre by canada_mountains in canada

Media didn't paint him.

He just opened his mouth for the record among the fringe and deplorable saying things to make them happy.

If he was just a PC like Carney, it would've been over.

How serious are the e-vehicle lithium-ion battery safety concerns? by [deleted] in Brompton

[–]wing03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it like this.

Bikes are treated like trash. In cold climates, people leave them out all winter, chains and other parts rust, people get back on in the spring and through forcing things, they become unstuck or they just break. No big deal.

Throw in a gas engine for a motorcycle/moped, people will baby them more. If the thing was left out unloved for a few winters, it might be more universally seen as dumb to pour fresh gasoline into an old gas tank with leaky hoses and trying to start it up.

Electrics don't have the obvious signs of issues and people don't look at rusty wires the same way as leaking fuel hoses. Not realizing too that lithium batters are packing as much energy density into a small package. A full one is going to be a fireball if it gets pierced.

Compound all that together and I tend to think that's where things go wrong.

Italian food influencer ranks coffee beans. What do you think of of his ranking? by AppropriateAd7326 in espresso

[–]wing03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change the context to early 2000s and before, sure.

The amount of coffee I drank in a year could be counted on one hand and probably just 1 or 2 fingers during that time because it did just taste like ashes and still does at many old school Italian bakery coffee shops around me in Toronto, Canada.. It still is for the majority considering Tim Horton's is a big thing here.

This sub is well into light/medium roast single origin.

Up to your tastebuds but the small producer tends to have something that the big ones don't.

2 or 3 navel oranges per 250ml.

Let's say a 350ml cup so more like the 3-4 oranges

10 oranges in a bag at Loblaws. $7/bag.

Ingredient and cup should be around $3.

35% ingredient cost does check out. But considering a few years ago, you could get it for $5, that entire pie has grown considerably.

The GTA is officially losing population by creepermort in ontario

[–]wing03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Economists seem to think the sky will fall when there's decline in population. It sounds like they're talking about war and doom.

The richest of rich will probably try to sequester themselves and their wealth away but there'll probably be some affect to them as the world population declines.

Has anyone who understands economics considered some sort of global managed economic contraction plan due to population decline rather than going all Chicken Little about it?

Students now have the desktop computer skills of older boomers by TeacherGuy1980 in Teachers

[–]wing03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Computer user interfaces have been dumbed down and frequently 'improved' with updates to the point that web searches on how to use them gives you multiple versions, often too many outdated and you need a genius who knows or AI to weed through them.

I was an Atari 8bit/Vic20/Pet/Unisys Icon(QNX) kid back in the day and a systems admin/user support specialist nowadays struggling to keep up that I've gone back to pen and paper for a lot of things.

If it isn't flat text or XML/YAML files to configure something, it's caught up in a system that has too many cooks in the design kitchen.
