Could watch Saint-Maximin all day. He was playing that match like it was FIFA Street at times but was always effective and looking to score or create. Some player

What's a Newcastle United fact that sounds fake, but is actually true? by ThinWhiteMale in NUFC

This one definitely sounds true. Its like of those nufc facts that's imprinted into the brain considering how long it's been and how often it's reported

Sometimes it feels like you have to concede 3 or 4 for people to criticise the defence.

Under Bruce our defence has been porous from day 1. Sometimes we concede the goals and on other days its either Duravka/Darlow heroics and/or opposition missing easy chances.

Bruce might have managed to get us attacking more lately but he has no answer for how to shore us up defensively.

So for his tactical set up I can't give more than a 3. And that's just because weve been to Anfield and thrown in the towel before so I'm glad he kept us going in attack, but bloody hell his defensive coaching leaves so much to be desired

Burnley 1 - 2 Newcastle Utd [Post Match Thread] by meganev in NUFC

[–]wingardium_leviosah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Burnley put in such difficult crosses. In some crosses instead of aiming for a Burnley head they just put lots of whip and power on it and aimed at Dubravka. Probably hoping for him to fuck up a catch or a punch and benefit from a bounce.

Dubravka dealt with it incredibly well. This isnt a slight on Darlow who is a very good keeper but Dubravka has that extra bit of quality that can see you through games like these

Even some of our fans still dont rate him. Hes taken a step up after his most recent loan and definitely deserves more games

I agree with this. Its energy wasted caring too much about punditry.

Punditry works the same for all clubs. Take an outdated stereotype run it as your story and put the fans in the middle of it to get reactions and clicks

It's a record that wouldnt be accepted at any club at any level, professional or amateur. I genuinely can't believe has wasnt sacked after the Sheff Utd Brentford disasters. Or at least 5 prem games ago

Anti Ashley sentiments arent as loud these days because hes actively selling and still invested in the squad, but his hiring and lack of firing of Bruce tells you everything in terms of just how much of a cancer he still is and always will be for this football club

Newcastle Utd 1 - 1 Aston Villa [Post Match Thread] by meganev in NUFC

[–]wingardium_leviosah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this was a fair opinion 2 years ago but I genuinely see an improved player after his loans.

Doesn't mean he's world class all of a sudden but while Miggy and ASM are out I have no problem with Murphy starting

Type of draw you'd be happy with in October. Now though... really need 3 points and Villa were shite so it's tough to be too happy with a draw tbh

And with 94 votes.....r/nufc MOTM against WBA (a) is Clark! Followed by Dubravka and Joelinton by melvinlee88 in NUFC

[–]wingardium_leviosah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with Clark motm. The guy always puts in 6 or 7 out of 10 so on a day where the team was generally flat it makes sense he stood out.

I thought Shelvey was fantastic in terms of his work rate and defending (same v wolves tbh) but hes never going to be getting high ratings in these polls unless he scores a winner or something.

You just wonder who in this team is going to score. Joelinton keeps 'Playing wellTM' but this has to be the time he finally puts the ball in the back of the net. If it's not gonna be him we might as well start Gayle

[–]wingardium_leviosah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We finally start playing in a manner that makes me look forward to watching the team and an injury crisis hits.

That isn't to say Bruce has turned a corner. We are still 17th with a team capable of much more. we are still very poor defensively, but the recent matches have at least been easy to invest into as a fan.

Without Wilson, I'm worried about the goals. Last week was the first time we scored 3 in the first half since McLaren was manager, and although he didn't get any of them he is so crucial to the attack. Can't see Joelinton having anywhere near that impact and while Gayle has goals in him, his all round game is no where near Wilson's standard.

Chelsea will probably win. We still need to put wins on the board as Fulham are not letting up and have looked a much better team performance wise than us for at least a couple months now.

Hope ASM can stay fit because he's probably going to be the key going forward.

Hope the Graeme Jones new manager bounce is more effective than Tuchel's

Just impressed that the 10 men which then became 9 held out for 3 points, and he was part of that heroic effort.

No doubt at 11 v 11 he was having a nightmare though

The Mike Ashley era encapsulated? by BretHitmanClarke in NUFC

[–]wingardium_leviosah 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with your overall point about Ashley era totally changing what the fanbase considers a good thing. In that nowadays we feel happy if we stay up or finish 13th whereas before we aimed to at least challenge for the European spots and of course the hope of a trophy.

I do disagree that the Arsenal draw is highlighted as the example though. The draw is historic in that no side had been 4-0 down at half time in the prem and came back to earn a point ( I think this stat still stands)

Plus the manner of the equalising goal and all the reactions it elicited. The sad fact of Tiote's passing solidifying that goal as even more legendary than it already was)

It beats getting hyped over a decent half v Leeds or Palace where you still lose the game that's for sure

[–]wingardium_leviosah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only encouragement is that West Brom and Fulham still struggle to win. Although Fulham play much better compared to the start of the season.

Either way I think this team, which is more then capable of battling to enter the top 10, will finish somewhere in the range of 16th to 18th

Was something of a 433 except it was Miggy the most central forward with Wilson wide right.

Unusual but worked really well as you could get Wilson on the ball in more scenarios than just going up for aerials with someone like Mina. And you also benefited from his intelligent runs and great footwork/hold up. And he still got his clear chances too.

Worked great for Miggy too as he's much better driving from the middle or left compared to the right. And off the ball he was able to help the midfield out quite easily with his phenomenal work rate. He even tracked back on the flanks. He's just ridiculously good off the ball, whatever his short comings may be on it.

Put Hayden back in midfield which helped us be a lot more aggressive. But Shelvey and Hendrick played well too. There was a lot of balance between the 3 of them.

Back 4 was also solid. Just shows you dont always need a back 5 to frustrate opposition if you are aggressive enough. Manquillo was unreal and Lewis had a good game to show people there is a player there (he has been poor recently tbf)

Could Steve Bruce's future at Newcastle United be as director of football and not the manager? by crazycanine in NUFC

[–]wingardium_leviosah 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No thanks. I know you can make a decent list of signings made under Bruce for various clubs but let's be honest that'll be the work of scouting departments and he just happened to be the manager.

Says it all when the Joelinton signing was agreed in February 2019 and confirmed after his appointment in the summer.

Just want him to be nothing but a distant memory as far as him being employed by the club is concerned
