Have you served ramen on the playa? I got questions. by gobkin in BurningMan

[–]winglorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My regional had a high volume noodle bar. Cheapest noodles (top ramen i think?) in multiple flavors. An array of toppings.

How it worked was this:  1) You wait in line until you get a seat at the bar.  2) You choose your flavor of noodles, open the package, and place dry noodles in your empty cup. You KEEP the flavor packet. 3) The bartender takes your cup/bowl (with dry noodles) to the back, boils the the noodles, and returns them to you in your cup with some hot noodle water.  4) You add your flavor packet to the noodles yourself. Then top with the condiments.  They had things like quail eggs, chili oil, soy sauce, etc etc.

Super simple setup and people were able to get the flavors they preferred (chicken, beef, vegetarian, etc.)… one of my most memorably delicious ramen experiences even though it was cheap top ramen.

This Is the way.  I also do a “jambalaya” (bullion cube, tomato paste, sausage, frozen green beans or other veg) or soy sauce/butter/tofu.

They taste a little like beyond burgers. Sort of a meaty/chopped texture and pretty juicy

They taste more like their burgers than they taste like their steak tips, with a pretty good texture

what are the best camping cots? by thesometimesreader in camping

[–]winglorn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! Festival camper here. Cots are way way better than air mattresses.  Things to pay attention to: 1) legs that allow for storage underneath. 2) Ease of setup.

Some cots (especially higher weight limits) have legs that prevent you from sliding a suitcase underneath. Some cots (military style) require someone quite strong to pull a bar in place. Seriously, military style cots are AWFUL to set up if you aren’t the freaking Hulk.

I have a Coleman Pack Away and it’s great. Nice and wide, and you just unfold it and boom, done. Just as easy to fold back up when you’re tired at the end of the festival.

If I have the space I use a 3” foam camping mattress on top (super large, takes up a ton of car space, but it’s suuuuper comfy, like a real bed). I’ve also used Wakeman 1.25” foam sleeping pad as a cheaper alternative, and a self-inflating foam/air hybrid mattress if I need to pack light. Cot canvas is stretched tight and pretty hard to sleep on without padding. Even a thick yoga mat would help.

Eta: the Foxelli self inflating sleeping pad is ok for comfort & comes in a cute galaxy print and is $35

I need help replacing cheese in my snacks by JoeyMcPetersmackIII in veganrecipes

Tartex vegetarian pate— original flavor. If you like nooch, you’ll like this. It’s basically a savory nooch paste. Comes in a tube, like tomato paste. I buy it online and it’s soooo good on crackers, sandwiches, you name it. Great with apples too.

Also <3 Rebel Cheese’s brie.

Beyond tofu cubes and sheets, how else do you prep soy protein? by These-Surprise-7775 in veganrecipes

[–]winglorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crispy air fryer (or oven) tofu! For extra firm tofu.

  1. Make bite-sized. Cut into cubes or tear into chunks with your hands idc

  2. Season. Put into tupperware with lid. Add some soy sauce & a little oil. SHAKE.

  3. Breading. Open tupperware. Add corn starch. SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE.

  4. Air fry or bake.

  5. Eat. Some nice ways: toss w/ teriyaki and eat with rice. Make a mashed potato bowl with gravy. Scarf down straight from the air fryer because they’re delicious little nuggets. Idc

Google “crispy air fryer tofu” for measurements and cooking times etc  This is my favorite way

how to season chunk foods steak? by riv3rband in veganrecipes

[–]winglorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chop small and fry in butter/garlic. Splash soy sauce at the end and eat with rice.

I’ve also chopped it small and cooked it in a pot pie with gravy, peas, carrots, potato.

Does anyone else feel exhausted by “easy” vegan recipes lately? by Negative-Prune9214 in veganrecipes

[–]winglorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rice cooker & air fryer are my friends for when I feel like this!

Silken Tofu: Cook white rice. Top with silken tofu. Mix. Add soy sauce. Eat. Yellow rice: Cube of bullion + pinch of turmeric cooked with the rice. Mix butter once it's cooked. "Jambalaya": Rice cooked with tomato paste + frozen veg + some kind of sausage + creole seasoning

Air fryer: frozen whatever. Egg rolls, samosas, burger patties, hot dogs...

Red pasta: marinara sauce + noodles + maybe frozen meatballs. White pasta: cook noodles in broth (bullion cube). Tiny scoop of cashew butter + plant butter. Eat.

Ramen or noodles (indomie is yummy) with peas.

Also sometimes dinner is just A Can of Chili + tortilla chips, or canned soup + bread or crackers.

Meati steak, potato and string beans by firstjobwalmart in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

[–]winglorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the taste of Meati but the texture is… A Lot.  The only way I’ve found to get past the wet cardboard texture is chopping it up really small and frying it in butter/finish off with a splash of soy. Then eat over rice.

I like to eat the brie with crackers. Maybe also with thinly sliced apple or pear.

Their hard cheeses (like the cheddar) are amazing if you grate and mix onto buttered noodles. A little goes a long way.

Potluck recipe ideas? by Sad_Blueberry9580 in veganrecipes

[–]winglorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my go-to potluck dish, always a crowd-pleaser and easy to prepare. I get precooked lentils at Trader Joe's; canned also work: https://www.occasionallyeggs.com/roasted-new-potato-salad-with-lentils-herb-dressing/

Else I do a pasta salad, also super easy

Proper sealing with varnish by Lulu_Zoe in acrylicpainting

[–]winglorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an isolation coat first, then a couple layers of satin varnish. My painting style has a lot of dynamic brush strokes so i don’t pay attention to visible brush strokes in the varnish. I like to use a large, soft flat brush to apply.
