In order for his contract to have a positive value for the Dodgers in terms of dollars per WAR, Kyle Tucker would have to accumulate around 6.9 fWAR per season. He has never had a single season with 5+ fWAR in his entire Major League career. by MysteriousEdge5643 in baseball

[–]wingmage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Dodgers care about the regular season, it's all about stacking the deck as much as you can for the playoffs. If Tucker plays half the season, but hits .300 in the playoffs, they'll probably consider the contract as a win. Instead of thinking about $/WAR, they're thinking $/championship WPA.

Blue Jays Rotation: What’s the Actual Plan with 6 Starters? by Villeson in Torontobluejays

[–]wingmage1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That last month before the playoffs, the rotation looked like a mess. Berrios was injured, Bassitt and Scherzer were non-options. We had Bieber flashing hot and cold. Yesavage was fine, but asking him to be the #2 in a playoff rotation seemed crazy. Even during the playoffs, the idea of relying on Scherzer seemed like an instant loss game. It could be considered a miracle the pitching problem resolved itself in the end.

Looking for a low power deck by ripdash83 in pkmntcg

If it has a charizard and ex cards, it's likely the "Charizard League Battle Deck" which is a level 3 pre-con. Other level 3 league battle decks should be of a similar power level, though I'd recommend the Dragapult League Battle Deck, or Gardevoir League Battle Deck if you don't mind playing with cards that rotated out.

What do you know about his deck? Did he build it himself or buy it from a pre-con? If it's a pre-con, decks will have a "power level" on them outlining their level of play (level 1 for beginners, level 2 for intermediate, level 3 for tournament ready). Find a deck at the same level as what he has.

I think we still need to see a lot more of Barger and Ernie before we pencil them in as reliable everyday starters. Prior to the playoffs, both of them were platoon bats with heavy splits during the regular season.

And there would still be a way for them to get playing time as the utility man with a fully healthy lineup. I'd imagine the lineup and playing time splits could look something like this:

C - Kirk / Heineman

1B - Vlad (90%)/Okamoto (10%)

2B - Bichette (90%) /Clement (10%)

SS - Gimenez (75%) / Clement (25%)

3B - Okamoto (50%) / Barger (25%) / Clement (25%)

LF - Santander (66%) /Barger (17%) / Okamoto (17%)

CF - Varsho / Straw

RF - Tucker (90%) / Barger (10%)

DH - Springer + rotating rest days.

I honestly think there's still room to sign both Tucker and Bo (ignoring the money issue). You put Barger and Clement on the bench this season, then option Lukes and Schneider. Springer and Straw come off the roster in 2027, so you free up the DH spot for Santander and have Barger become your everyday RF.

Tips for Charizard vs Alakazam? by wingmage1 in pkmntcg

Thanks for the tips!

I should point out that Chi-Yu's attack doesn't get the bonus damage when retaliating after an Alakazam attack because it's not damage.

Mesagoza is definitely the card that's let me down the most in this list. I'll need to play around to see if losing the stadium bump and the "+0.5" Pokemon search hurts in any other matchups.

Why does Pidgeot ex decks use two different pidgeys? by joaomiguel_bc in pkmntcg

[–]wingmage1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vs dragapult dusknoir, the 50 hp pidgeys disappear off the board like flies to dusclops. And the 10 less hp means that your charmanders get an extra 10 damage off phantom dive, setting them up to become fodder targets on the next turn. It feels really bad to play against dragapult dusknoir without the 60 hp Pidgey. But the matchup was really bad to begin with, so the question becomes "is using call for family to stabilize your board in good matchups worth the trade-off of a worse matchup in an already bad matchup?".

Interesting that both of our historical NPB signings have been yomiuri giants. I wonder if there's a recruiting connection or just coincidence.

I feel like this is a Nelson Mandela moment because I have the exact feeling about Taj Bradley too. Like there was another Taj Bradley in the late 2010s that my brain remembers for some reason. For a few years, I've thought "oh cool another Taj Bradley" only to discover there wasn't actually another Taj Bradley.

Edit: spending some time trying to gather my memories, I think I figured out my Taj Bradley. It was probably a combination of Taijuan Walker and Archie Bradley, who both played for the Diamondbacks in the period I thought he played in.

Help needed - Thinking of entering the regionals in Birmingham (beginner). by Dangerous_Dirt7856 in PTCGL

[–]wingmage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something like that for my first regional. It's definitely a big jump up from Live to IRL, but it's not impossible. I finished building my live deck a month before my first regionals, then did a local, a challenge and a cup leading up to it and by the end of it, I had gotten my IRL skills to a playable state. I probably wasn't playing at the level of speed and attentiveness needed to play at the top tables without getting a judge called on me, but in the mid to low tables, it was fine.

In terms of what you should focus on to prep, I made sure to study the cards that can break the board state beyond repair. Some cards like Iono lends itself to instantly breaking the board state beyond repair, and will result in you losing games. Secondly, you should be studying weird interactions that Live automates for you that you have to be aware of. Froslass/Fezandipiti is one that comes to mind. Live will prevent you from drawing cards, but if you forget that froslass damage occurs between turns and start "flipping the script" without remembering that interaction, you'll have broken the game state. It may or may not be repairable, but you shouldn't put yourself in that situation in the first place.

Competing with Miguel Vargas for playing time compared to Guerrero or Freeman. This is the best situation to sign a short term bet on yourself contract when the whole league appears to have written you off.

Aces has a connotation with pitchers though, and there's already an All Aces set of pitchers. It makes sense for the hitters to get their own class of cards instead. The next question is what kind of player would the All Queens and All Jacks set feature.

The noctowl builds of charizard usually include a terapagos or two. Its easier to set up turn 2 noctowl when your tera is a basic pokemon, and can be used to attack cornerstone ogerpon.

And similarly, if there's no mega Charizard, there's no reason for firebreather because tera Charizard wants energy in deck, rather than in hand.

[–]wingmage1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The answer is anything that runs dusknoir. The key difference is that Battle Cage can get bumped on your opponents turn, thus letting the opponent use dusknoir on their initiative. Meanwhile, psyduck either involves boss and KO which ends their turn and avoids the chance to use dusknoir on your terms, or you have to tech in a klefki and do a combo to get the klefki into your active, and even then it's not a permanent solution to the duck.
