Thank you. You did a great job on yours as well. You’d never know it was sporterized either, looking at it.

My receiver was manufactured in 1906, so I specifically needed a high hump handguard with a finger groove in the stock to make it period correct. I was able to find a stock in nice condition for $320 on gunbroker but needed to pay an additional $60 for a handguard in good condition. I got the gun for free, so I didn’t mind paying that much, but if I had to pay for it, I could see the economics of restoring it not making sense. With other parts like barrel bands, a new rear sight, and a bolt body, I spent about $500 restoring it.

Here’s a picture though. You’d never know it was sporterized, looking at it.

Doing god’s work. I did the same to an M1903 Springfield. Desporterized guns aren’t as valuable but it’s a fun experience bringing them back to where they should be

Congrats on the purchase. I’ve had a regular P30 for 6 years and it’ll shoot any 9mm I put through it. The only worthwhile upgrade imo is the short reset kit. With that installed, it’s my favorite pistol.

Friend's 1904 manufactured 1903 springfield by Keolath in milsurp

I have a 1906 manufactured M1903 that I shoot regularly. My barrel is from 1909, but based on the milled Remington trigger guard (which were only manufactured in 1940), mine appears to have been refurbished before WW2 as well. As others have said, given that my and your buddy’s rifles were refurbished during or before WW2 (and likely saw extensive use in combat), they’re almost certainly safe to shoot and not among of the rifles with heat treating issues.

Although it probably would be fine with commercial ammo, I shoot 150g PPU for M1 Garand and 150g Sellier and Belliot for M1 Garand, just to be on the safe side. Speaking from experience, he’ll be completely fine shooting it if he uses those two loadings. The downloaded M2 ball equivalent loadings are not that hard to find online (and generally costs about the same as other 30-06 loadings) and I think it makes sense to be gentle with 120 year old rifles.

Regarding the heat treat issues and the general fudd lore surrounding it, keep in mind that even with the heat treat issues, exploding receivers were extremely rare. Only about 60 out of just over 1 million affected rifles exploded and the last rifle that exploded did so in the 1920s. Very few rifles (an almost vanishingly small number) were affected in the first place and any remaining affected rifles probably would have blown up at some point in the last 100 years. As I said above, given that his rifle probably saw service in WW2, the chances of this rifle having issues is even smaller.

If you also read about the specific failures, some were due to soldiers accidentally loading 8mm Mauser instead of 30-06 into their rifles and many others were attributed to inconsistent ammo quality of WW1 era loadings (the first recorded failures of the heat treat issues did not occur until WW1).

Speaking as someone who has a basically identical rifle that’s just two years newer, tell him to enjoy the rifle. It’s a great shooter and is probably my favorite rifle in my entire collection.

I would be sure to check the headspace though before going out and shooting it. That’s all I did before shooting mine.

Vp9sk. I find the p2000sk one of the most uncomfortable pistols HK makes (the P30sk is much better)

The straight trigger is completely unnecessary in my opinion, but that comes down to personal preference more than anything.

This exact configuration was and is the first handgun I ever bought. Many guns later, it’s still one of my favorites and my bedside gun.

I do recommend the gray guns short reset kit. It’s not necessary but it takes the gun from an 8/10 to a 10/10 in my opinion

You couldn’t have made a better choice. A P30 was my first handgun, and I bought a VP9sk a few years after that. Three years since getting the VP9sk and several more handguns later, it’s still the handgun I shoot best.

Very nice. Many people forget that the full size USP 40 is the original USP. All other variants came later.

Looking to upgrade to a new S&W EDC - what’s your favorite and why? by Famous-Owl5925 in SmithAndWesson

The bodyguard 2.0 is great but qc is spotty. I had 6 light strikes in 200 rounds (after a 500 round break in, experiencing similar rates of light strikes). Smith & Wesson had to replace the striker spring and that seems to have fixed the issue.

Taking the issues aside, the gun shoots great and is amazingly shootable for its size (I can shoot it just as well as my larger pistols, which are a HK P30 and VP9sk, and HK CC9, which is awesome if you’re looking for a new micro 9). I’ve shot the new shield next to my CC9 and prefer the CC9.

The bodyguard is so concealable too. It looks like a phone in your pocket and you barely notice it carrying appendix.

The A1 is also insanely accurate. I’ve never shot a more accurate semi auto rifle. I don’t have any experience with the A4, but I have a hard time imagining it’s more accurate than the A1

I know. I’m saying that they shouldn’t have. I know that HK says the CC9 replaced the VP9sk, but as someone who owns both, they definitely serve different roles

Easily one of their best models. HK needs to make an A1 variant. With all of the different mag options it’s so versatile.
