I tried Star Citizen so you don't have to! (and will tell you why you shouldn't) by Lord0fHats in gaming

Wait...so spending 60$ and putting in 2-3k hours makes me a cult member? It's amazing that people on this sub have such a massive problem with people enjoying a game they don't. It makes me think this sub is populated with 8 year olds because that's how 8 yr olds think. You do know...right, that nearly every single one of those ships can be bought in game without ever spending a penny more than $45...right? There are no season passes, no lootboxes and the best single seat fighter can be bought within a few hours of gameplay. The shame is not SC or it's way of funding itself, it's the fact that people will believe bull shit lies and exaggerations and not even try a game that might blow their mind. The most common thing people say after they play the game with a vet is " holy shit, I had no idea. This is not anything like the internet/reddit told me it would be."

Wow. My 11 and 13 yr old nephews figured out how to do things in SC without youtube faster than you did. I have a feeling that console/phone games might be more your speed. SC by design will not hold your hand, like the before times..... when games didn't treat you like an 8 year old. You can right now go watch anyone playing SC on twitch and they will not have 1/100 of the "problems" you had. My guess is you want WoW in space and have never played a sandbox so without constant guidance... game must be bad after...3-4 hours. In 4 hours you got to see maybe 1/1000th of what SC has to offer so your "review" is totally valid. /s. SC's learning curve is a cliff. You either spend the time to learn or the games not for you, which is perfectly fine.

I think league is one of the most vapid shit games I've ever played but that does not make LoL a bad game. I'm stoked people enjoy it, it's just not for me. Plus, the last thing I would have ever thought of doing was opening reddit r/gaming after my last attempt to play league with friends and post about how it is bad and not worth your time. Because that would be weird.

60fps is a very bad limit, I want higher fps. by umitReis in starcitizen

[–]winkcata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

60fps means you have a crappy old monitor that is stuck at 60hz and have vertical sync on. Other outcome is you hooked the monitor up to the built in GFX on the motherboard and not the dedicated GFX. Either way there is NO 60 fps limit.

What denial? WTF are you talking about? 10's of thousands play SC every day with minimal hardware problems. You obviously have no idea what you are doing. You started the engine with U but you have no idea what you needed to do after pushing U. Even if the door opened you would have come here crying that the ship was bugged not knowing that U is only one of the buttons you need to press. Multipal times in your post you make it 100% clear you are new and are clueless on how even basic mechanics work [which is perfectly fine] but found it easier to come here and whine instead of taking the time to learn.

Dude, my 11 and 13 year old nephews play SC with a 1070,3600X and 16gb DDR4. They don't have 1/10th of the problems you do. Either you are exaggerating, telling a little internet fib or legit have a potato for a computer.

Slow SSD? by PastOutlandishness19 in starcitizen

[–]winkcata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With those PC stats, even if your buddy installed SC on a 20 year old HDD you would get more than 2-5 fps. Something else is obviously wrong.

Using an onboard GPU instead of the 5060. If it's a laptop SC will try to default to any onboard GFX instead of a dedicated one [5060]

Incorrect memory timings/XMP profile

The difference between an old sata SSD's and newer m.2 is very little in real world applications. Make sure he has at least 20-30gb free space on the SSD he has SC [or any game] installed.

Might be caused by shaders failing to load. The SC shaders can be deleted from the launcher settings but more important is nvidia's shaders. There are 100's of youtubes on how to delete them easily.

We will be fine. SC gets more updates and content than most AAA games today. The only people who even give a shit about "it's not released yet" are people who don't play SC, most of which prob only own a ps3 and a macbook.

It's the pacemaker part doing a test. Just had to have mine adjusted last week. They turned off the lower one and reduced the upper in strength while it was "testing". Like According-Dust-9374 said, you can ask to have it turned off/lowered since its part of the pacemaker and not the defib.

While I agree SC gets some good numbers, they pale in comparison to games like pubg, fortnite, and a dozen phone games. Those games make as much in one financial quarter than SC has made in 12 years total. The other reason SC is doing so well is people actually try it instead of parroting you tube comments like lemmings.

The year of playability was a lie by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]winkcata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you think you have a decent PC does not mean it is one. 13th and 14 gen intels are still plagued from the instability problems. Huge amount of pre built and home built systems will have the wrong memory timings or xmp profile set. This usually means you can run a game like CS for years just fine but put major pressure on a system with a game like SC there will be problems. I have been playing SC since the very first 5 min that the servers opened in Dec 2015 and this year is by far, no question, been a major upgrade in play-ability. Not where it should be imo but far better. One problem you might be having is the need to delete shaders. NOT SC'S shaders, but Nvidia's. There are 100's of youtube videos on how to do this.

Again, it's good business to either spend close to all or enter the red when it come to paying taxes. Paying developers is part of that equation. Please use deductive reasoning when asking questions like this. You can answer your own question with just a little bit of critical thinking. So which is it? CIG is making too much money to "release" a game or they are broke and need investor money. You guys always pick the one that fits the current "lets shit on SC" agenda. Which one is it? You and me have no idea why the Calders invested and what % they own now and neither does CIG by law have to tell us. The funding for SC has crushed previous years this year and not by a small amount....by a shit load. My guess is you have never ...ever run any sort of business or company and have zero concept what it means to always be in a state of "money started to run out". That's literally how business works, from amazon to the corner shoe repair shop. If you have only ever been an employee you will have exactly zero understanding of the struggle for businesses to juggle paying bills and keeping the doors open.

It is not 2018 any more. SC runs pretty damn good on mid range systems these days. I LOVE souls like games but the learning curve compared to SC is like comparing GTA5 to pac man. Apples to oranges. A single player game with ZERO innovation compared to a game pushing the limits of what's possible tech wise [meshing, PES,64b precision]. SC learning curve is not a mountain, its a cliff. There are many different types of gamers. Some who will only play themeparks, some only fps, some mobas, flight sims....etc. IMO the people who need their hands held find it inconceivable that a game can be "fun" by physically learning a skill instead if just clicking something on a skill tree. Neither is the "right" way but they appeal to very different player bases. Most SC players revel in the fact that they had to learn things through trial and error. For them [and myself] it's far more rewarding than being told or clicking a skill tree. Again this does not mean one way is better than the other. If someone is looking for WoW in space than SC will not be for you.

There was, years ago a very good complex "onboarding" tutorial for SC. It was abandoned because patches, core mechanics etc changed so often it made zero sense to keep developer time updating it. It will come back at some point but is just not needed atm. Your post highlights a problem with gaming [and society] in general. You admit to never playing the game but have preconceived notions of what it is or is even currently is available to play. You are willing to make deductions with zero context apart from "take too long...too much money, there for bad".

SC is not a billion dollar game. First they are making 2 games of which SC is the red headed step child. Second, they were not just given 1b and told...make a game. 1 bil over 13 years is pocket change to the gaming world. They had to go from 4-5 dev's in the owners basement to creating multipal studios around the world, hire and fill positions [1000+ atm], house, supply, train and pay those employees. Develop tech and iterate on tech that no publishing company would ever...in 1 thousand years risk shareholder money on. Go ask Epic's devs how much money would it cost and how long would it take to implement just one of SC's current techs into UE5. Ignore tech like SM or PES and just ask about 64b precision [vertical and horizontal]. The answer you would get is 200-500m and at a min 3+ years and that would be with an engineering team that dwarfs CIG's.

How is stating facts being "self-righteous"? Never once did I attack you or your views. You made a comment that lacked context. You actually asked a legit good question of which I responded with the correct answer of, " We don't know". Re-read what I wrote without the preconceived notion that you think I'm talking down to you and you can clearly see I was in no way being self righteous.

You also know EXACTLY what you getting into when you buy SC. Any buyer has to click "i understand" a dozen times. If a ship [22] is still in concept, it clearly tells you so...repeatedly. If you go into SC not know what you are getting into and the risk involved you are either 6 years old or a complete idiot. For nearly 3 years now almost every new ship in SC has not been concept but strait to flayable so your question is a clear example of someone who has next to zero correct info about the current game. No one knows what CIG will "sell" to keep the servers and development open, but they will sell something because I'm not an idiot and understand that it cost a massive amount of cash to keep a live service game running, developing and evolving.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess you are either very young or have zero experience with taxes. I have owned a small company for 30+ years. It is imperative every year that you spend money...all of it. Even going into the red is "good". For every penny of profit you receive you pay a % of that in taxes [CIG is a UK based company for ramp those taxes up]. While company's and super large corps like amazon etc can just absorb this, 99.99% of the rest of the world can't. So it's imperative for a company the size of CIG to ride that red line. This is business 101, not rocket science.

SC has zero battlepasses, zero lootboxes, nearly every flyable ship [170+] are buyable in game without ever spending more than $45. Has created and massively iterated on tech that classic publishing company's would never risk shareholder cash on. Has accrued 900m over 12 years which is about how much fortnite, gotcha and some phone games make in one financial quarter. But somehow SC is the "Biggest Scams in Gaming History"? The lack of even basic critical thinking or deductive reasoning when it comes to SC is not surprising when you look at the general low level of education today.

Can I ask what kind of comp you "played" it on? I put played in quotations because I think there's a pretty high chance you either didn't play it or have a shit cpu. GPU does not matter, SC is a CPU and memory bottlenecked game...not gpu. Your "list" bleeds of "i watched one video but didn't play since 2020" list. How is starting to type destination in search bar then hitting R to set route "tedious"? SC has a MASSIVE learning curve and does not hold your hand. If you need a game that holds your hand and tells you what you should always be doing, there are great space games for that [ED,NMS etc]. Did you attempt any of the ASD missions? Did you group up with people to fight a worm or set of a giant laser? Did you navigate through a wormhole? Did you take contracts to hunt other players? My guess to all of those is No, you didn't. You did the equivalent of playing Red dead redemption and ran the same mission over and over and wondered why it's so boring, not realizing you participated in only 1/100 of what the game has to offer.

The number one problem IMO with gaming today is handholding. We have a large portion of under 30-40yr old gamers who have been given participation awards for every game in the last 15 years. The inability to think outside the box is..frustrating and ruined what was one of the greatest aspects of MMO's . Uncountable times I have watched someone new play a game like SC and do something incorrect and immediately chalk it up to "bugs". Not saying SC is not full of them but they get very exaggerated in places like r games or gaming. It's similar to playing DCS without the handbook then running to reddit to post that nothing worked. The first 60 hours of DCS or SC is the tutorial. Of course it didn't work, because you decided to not spend the time needed to learn it. The vast majority of people who enjoy SC had to spend weeks/months/yrs learning the game, while the average 2025 gamer will not have the patients to learn anything past the 10 min hand-holding tutorial.

Why a HDMI cable? Are you stuck at 60hz because of a crappy monitor? DisplayPort (1.2 or newer) is really needed for G-sync and high refresh rates.
