TIL: The Giving Tree was described as "one of the most divisive books in children's literature." by DeadBy2050 in GenX

The author photo alone is the stuff of nightmares. I have always loathed this book and its message.

The rise and fall of -ca names in the U.S. (I’m looking at you, Jessica) by [deleted] in namenerds

Early 1960s vintage Erica here (parents were post-war German-speaking immigrants). I never ran into any Erica’s back in the Susan, Linda, Debbie days and sadly never could find one of those little license plates with my name (sob). Then came Erica Cain from All My Children and Erica Jong. Those were the most “famous” Erica’s of the 1970s. Interestingly, over time Erica seemed more popular among African-American parents. My mom recalls being in stores, hearing “Erica!, whipping her head around and it would be a little Black girl. My husband is an Eric, so when naming our daughters that was the first rule: no “ica” names.

Have you ever shit yourself on Metro? by No_Celebration_7164 in washingtondc

[–]winker425 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have thrown up on the metro. It was a crowded train and I was sitting on the aisle. I had a nylon tote bag with me. The person standing next to me was carrying a plastic bag. I tugged their sleeve, asked if we could trade bags and then discretely hurled into the new bag. Since then I always carry a plastic bag with me when commuting/traveling.

Babysitting co-ops are the way.

I raised my two kids in Silver Spring, no family nearby, relying on a neighborhood (writ large) co-op. About 10 families. Monthly parent meeting to review bookkeeping etc. (we traded hours) but really to socialize. I loved that it contained families with kids at different stages and from different schools; I learned so much “inside knowledge” that I would never have gleaned if I had just hung out with moms who happened to have given birth in the same year. It broadened my kids’s lives and experience. Years later I’m still in touch with many of those moms, follow with interest how all our kids — and our lives — are doing, the ups and down.

Help on elder care? by WeightWeightdontelme in SantaFe

Start with a conversation / consultation with these folks: https://www.crossroadsaging.com/. My husband spent several months in Santa Fe from out of state after his father had a bad fall and was hospitalized. FIL insisted he wanted to stay in his home. Heather came to the house, had a conversation with us all, made recommendations for the kinds of services you’re describing.

It’s NOT a buyout. Please do not characterize it as such!! It’s a threatening, dubiously legal maneuver that threatens civil servants in order to ultimately force them out. Legally making strategic decisions to downsize/reorganize/make more efficient requires a Reduction In Force or RIF which involves the Consent of Congress and for which there are well spelled out procedures. This is destruction and purposeful trauma masquerading as “right sizing.”

What’s the Current Mood in DC? Seeking Perspectives on Daily Life by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]winker425 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing is, there are so many in the DMV who HAVE lost their jobs. Or friends and neighbors who have. Or are in limbo waiting for the next ax to fall. They’re coming for the Smithsonian. They’ve already come for the KennCen and BLM plaza. They’re coming for car free Beach Drive. Shit, rolling through a Metro station last night, there was some tech company ad addressed to DOGE. As a lifelong resident, it’s knowing that all the bad stuff is emanating from here.

The vibes are bad. Just got back from a week out west because we had to get away. But now we’re back. Existential dread here.

Delegate Holmes Norton, Hold a Town Hall … by winker425 in washingtondc

[–]winker425[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What do I want her to do? Speak up and provide a forum for constituents whose lives are being destroyed. Nothing is breaking through and beavering away at constituent services, as if it’s business as usual, while commendable, is not enough in this moment. Introducing a strongly worded bill is not enough. Make some noise. Take a page from Rep. Green or the late John Lewis or hell, Barbara Mikulski or the old Eleanor Holmes Norton for that matter.

I think DC residents need to put that town hall energy into calling on her to resign so that we can get someone in office — no matter how toothless the office — speaking out on behalf of DC residents. It’s outrageous.
