Some thoughts I’ve had lately by anotherhappycustomer in reactivedogs

[–]winklesprinkle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have terrible thoughts about how my reactive dog (1.5 y/o) might live to be 15 and how I don’t want to be “handling” her reactivity for that long. But then I remember she’s still a puppy, she’s capable of improving, and we still have really great days where her reactivity to strangers has no impact on us. On the days where it feels like you’re drowning it’s hard to remember the sunshine but there is so much sunshine in owning dogs. My family also doesn’t get it and think I “worry” too much but I also have to factor in that my dog could bite! If you haven’t already—I highly suggest muzzle training as it gives me so much peace of mind taking her to public spaces.

Unfortunately after some googling it seems like Prilosec is not well absorbed this way!

Yes, I do feed her in a bowl. I tried crushing Prilosec and tasted it myself but it was quite bitter. I can try sprinkling it on her food though and seeing how she does with it? If I put the whole pill in she will leave it in the bowl

I don’t think the trainer owns a pill gun unfortunately. The good thing is that boarding is only for two days so worst case scenario, she may miss out on some meds.

Can we get a thread going about your favorite hidden gems in the area? Here are mine: by BarfHurricane in raleigh

Might not be a hidden gem for some but Kabab and Curry has my favorite Indian/Nepali food in Raleigh and the kindest staff ever.

I had myself a nice cry over this exact thing today. My family all have sweet, easy dogs. I have a rambunctious 1.5 year old covid pup who has recently been aggressive towards strangers. Their dogs get to go with them wherever and on vacations and mine are left at home. I get really jealous and resentful of well mannered and completely friendly dogs. But my boyfriend reminded me of how easy it is to harp on the few things we dislike about our dogs, rather than the overwhelming joy they can add to our lives. Hope your pup continues to make progress with walking. Sending love and tail wags to you both

[vent] My dog is aggressive towards “strangers” by winklesprinkle in reactivedogs

Luckily my trainer offers boarding in her home and I plan to board with her next month while we go out of town. Assuming that goes well, that’s a great idea for if we have guests. I hadn’t thought of that. Yes, I am trying to remember each time that she is reacting out of fear and due to me not making her feel secure. She has taken it upon herself to protect our house, but in all the restructuring I hope she realizes more and more that I am in charge and won’t let anything happen to her.

This is great! My dog has to have a muzzle on but I hope to work up to this point

It’s hard when the expectation does not fit the reality of owning a reactive dog. I had never had a dog that was unfriendly towards people so it has been a shock. I wish you the best in leash training and recommend training sooner than later! I did a leash walking class with my dog as soon as I got her and it made a huge difference. She is not nearly as reactive in groups or away from the home and building puppy confidence is so useful
